Over two hours travelling in each direction every day? That's pretty horrible.

Twenty hours a week. Yikes.

If you'd come to the BeexBeeQueue, you'd know that was inaccurate.

Fucking hell dude, you literally could not pay me enough for that kind of bullshit.

The closest I've ever been was commuting from Glasgow to Edinburgh for my first proper job but it was nowhere near as bad as that and I was doing it for a very limited time (until I'd worked long enough to get a job somewhere in Glasgow essentially). I'd never, ever go back to it because it's miserable.

When I'm working in the office, I get up between 05:45 and 06:00 (depending if I've washed the night before - normally I have), leave the house at 06:40 get on the bus at 07:00, get off the bus at about 08:05 (if it's on time, sometimes it takes as long 08:30) Then into work for 08:20 to start for 08:45.

When I'm at home, it's typically get up at 07:30 (the kids normally get up before 07:00 and sort their breakfasts out) so I can make sure they are all sorted for 08:15 when they go to school (including packed lunches)

On the rare occasions when Pauline is home and I'm working from home, I tend to get up at about 08:15 have a bath, and then start work.

Well yes there is that I suppose.

I'm just thinking back to the last time I had four hours commuting every day, which was when I worked at GAME in Blackburn (getting from Radcliffe to Blackburn was surprisingly time consuming on public transport), but of course back then the absolute pinnacle of mobile entertainment technology was a fucking Game Boy, and there's only so much Tetris it's possible to play.

Thinking about it now it probably would have been almost 'pleasant personal space' if I could have just put some headphones on and watched movies/TV series on an iPad.

EDIT - Also I suspect you're getting massively better paid than I did at GAME......

Is that because you don't like to be late, or because that's what time the bus runs?

It used to be later than that, as I'd roll my lazy ass to work at around 9.15. Getting there on time only adds about five minutes to the overall length.

I commute an hourish by train ( or a bit less by train when I can be arsed to cycle some of the way ). I used to have a shorter overall commute but half by bus, half by train. I *hated* that. Bloody buses never ran on time, were always crammed full and were either boiling hot in summer or all wet and gross in winter.

Both, but if I miss that bus, the next one is about 2 hours later! So that's the main reason.

18 months ago, there were 3 busses I could take to get into work, the first would get me in 45 minutes early , the 2nd one about 20 mins early and the 3rd would get me in one time perhaps 33% of the time, and the rest about 10 minutes late.

I would tend to get on the first one, partly because the 2nd one was fuller, but also it meant I could ease into the day, check the web, email, maybe get my head around a tricky problem if I knew I had a busy day coming up.

When I lived and worked in Exeter, I would often cycle in (leave at 08:00, takes 15 - 20 minutes, start work at 09:00) and use the extra time to cool down, change and wash my sweaty bits.

:this:

My commute to Blackburn and back was the same, bus from Radcliffe to Bolton, train from Bolton to Blackburn.

On paper it was doable in about 75-80 minutes, but in reality the absolute crappery of the deregulated buses and trains and everything being run by different companies and nothing being even remotely designed to operate in a joined-up manner, PLUS the fact that buses and/or trains were liable to be cancelled at zero notice or simply not turn up at all meant that it usually ended up as a two hour each way affair, sometimes even longer.

I hated it so, so, SO much that in the end I just bought a Honda C90 for £300 and rode that there and back instead. It wasn't entirely legal but it did save my sanity.

Forgot to mention, I leave the house at 07:55 to be in work for 07:59. Craster can attest to the length of my commute.

*is smug*

Takes me less than ten minutes to get to work, but that's walking. I always get up 75 minutes before I'm due to start work but most of that time is spent arsing about online. It's nice to be able to take my time getting ready.

Well I get up at 5:15 for work at 7am and work 12 hours 'til 7pm, getting back home at 8pm. On the plus side, I only work three days a week and get paid more than I did when I worked 5 days :smug:

I used to be able to leave the house at 8:58 and be at the office for 8:59, walking.

Now I have to leave at about 8:35 to be there for 8:55 (or roundabouts), driving.

Which means I now get up at 8:20.

Bloody car. Phonecall from the garage earlier tonight - £290 now instead of £250. Looks like we're living off beans for the rest of the month. At least the rabbit is alright - she was doing her usual 'secretly kipping on the sofa' routine earlier.

It took 20 minutes to get in by 8 this morning. If I'd left 10 minutes later it'd've taken at least 10 minutes longer. My bike's been thoroughly serviced so I'll be cycling again next week, which I expect to take about 30 minutes the first few times.
