Sim arrived today, I plugged it in my iphone and called up t-mobile services.
A very nice woman answered and asked me how she could help with my dongle :hat:

I said I was actually calling from an iphone and that I wanted to switch on the 12 month free internet.
She asked me what phone I had, I said an iPhone 4S, she then went on for ages about how lovely a phone it was and how lucky I was

Then gave me a 6 month free internet booster, and then another 6 month free internet booster to start the day after that one finishes. Didn't ask for IMEI number or anything, so it doesn't seem like they care that much. I suspect I could have phoned from any mobile and got the boosters turned on.
It is possible that they will check whether the sim is in an iPad in the future, but I doubt that they will to be honest.

Latest development: I have had all the paperwork through from new job, red tape and lack of communication from old job is now preventing things moving forward. Yesterday I did some filming for a big medical firm in the area so will be putting the spoils towards a 64-gigger, the better to put loads of stuff on.

So, anyway, the Retina screen is nice, but not as ZOMFG as I was expecting. I have only looked at the setup and home screens so far, though. I set it up at work without the aid of a PC/Mac using the iCloud backup I took before leaving work this morning. This was excellent.

It feels very small and light compared to my iPad 1, but I had a TeckNet case on that so it made it huge. The smart cover is some kind of voodoo shit.

I do, because I've not got an iCloud backup. I've not got an iAnything so can't make a backup of the nothing I haven't got. Which, iirc, means I've got to hook it up to a PC or a Mac.

Would you like to explain what the hooking up to a PC or Mac does for a virginal iPad, which was obviously the point of the question?

I'm registering an apple account in iTunes now, though I've not got any need to buy anything. Does this automatically give me an iCloud?

/edit I've bought the "free single of the week" (which is quite nice anyway) so now have some iTunes content to backup to iCloud. I assume I'm to avoid 'Ping' like the fucking plague?

You can set it up as a new iPad using iOS5 without connecting it to a computer. I just had an iPad backup previously, so set it up from that rather than as a new one.

Yup. Essentially, your Apple ID is everything Apple uses to refer to you: your account for apps and other media; iCloud; related services like Find my iThing.

Depends whether you like social network ghost towns or not. Frankly, I'd turn it off and forever ignore it existed.

One thing: even if you're using iCloud for back-ups, you can still force a manual local back-up of your iThing to your PC, by right-clicking it in the iTunes sidebar and selecting the relevant option. I highly recommend you do this now and again, in case your iCloud back-up fucks up and your device decides it needs to restore. Both things are pretty rare, and both together are very, very rare, but this happened to one of my editors, who was subsequently furious—mostly at not taking the odd manual back-up.

The dictation function makes you (not just you) look like a cunt though. And you could have typed it in the time it's taken you to mute the tv and re-do the sentence it cocked up.

Just tried a few files in AVPlayerHD.

720p MKV no problem
1080p MKV no chance

A bit disappointing, but as expected really, at least I no longer have to convert my TV shows as I currently have to do on my iPad 1. Films will have to be converted via handbrake as usual though, if I only have the 1080p version to hand.
