David Rathband, the policeman that Roaul Moat shot, has been found dead, apparently suicide.

I thought this was incredibly sad. I don't know how realistic it is to hope that someone can lead a 'normal' life after something like that, but it's sad that he appears not to have been given the support that was needed.

Yeah that was really sad news. I'm not sure how I would cope with losing my sight, probably not very well at all.

:this:

I've thought about this a bit (being very short sighted growing up and opting for laser surgery makes you think about it a fair amount).
Pretty much every single thing that I enjoy and I live my life for would be impossible if I was blind. I doubt I would cope at all.

That, and I think perhaps worse if the loss of sight isn't gradual or expected but very sudden and in the instance of being shot in the face, likely with the shooter's intention to kill.

It reminds me of that Homicide: Life on the Street episode, when that detective is permanently blinded by a shooter and has to be cared for by his wife, and he keeps having thoughts of suicide.

It's a sad business. :(

That's a terribly sad ending to a terrible saga.

Yes, terribly sad news, poor man, and those he leaves behind too.
I guess the sudden, catastrophic loss of sight is, in fact, only part of the story here, as appalling as that is. I have little doubt that such an unimaginable trauma will have triggered awful psychological effects as well, such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

RIP. :(
