Indeed. However, it was a little late at night for me to detail all correct options. ;)

Went into Gamestation. I had a fiver and a bit in 'XP' (never consciously tried to accumulate it, must have been when I took the card out and two quid in store credit so I got an 800 Space Dimrills card for XBLA. That way it takes the pressure off me spending now when I don't want to.

Drifted through Gamestation again the other day. It was DESERTED. No staff anywhere on the 'shop floor', one behind the till, busy with something. In Hull, Gamestation has a door at either end and makes a wonderful shortcut to Cex (opposite within the shopping centre) without having to go through the usual bits of the centre which are full of chavs. Anyway, I realised this was the perfect time to have a look at the Vita they've got on display, as I was impressed by the resolution and viewing angle on the screen when i clocked it last week.

I walked over the the unit and regarded the screen. The menus seem to be a series of circles in a sawtooth arrangement for various random apps. I flicked the thumbstick about to navigate - nothing. I tried the d-pad - nothing. Process of elimination then - must be touch control menus only. I don't get to figure this out - a security guard comes over and leans across, scrolling the menu up for me with his finger. Thanks for robbing me of the joy of discovery there, guy.

There's various games on the system, but I can feel eyes on me and select something safe and obvious - Wipeout. Can't go wrong, surely? It loads. And loads. And loads. I remember this on the original PSP when a guy in Game tried to get me to have a go on one when they first launched as well - he handed me the unit and invited me to play but after watching the bar crawl across the screen I explained my bus journey was shorter than the load times and the machine was pointless. ANyway I'm still watching this bar pixel-by-pixel its way across the high-res screen when some kid comes over.

"trying the new PS Vita there?"

"I'm trying to. It's taking forever to load Wipeout"

"Yeah, that game takes ages to load"

"Why? It's on a cartridge..."

"Are you interested in preordering one?"

"I have no idea, I've never had a go on one to see if I like it"

"If you'd like to preorder one we're taking preorders now"

"I don't order consoles because there's no point, besides I'm less likely than normal to buy this one - I bought a PSP eventually and it hasn't seen much action at all due to the lack of games I like for it."

"Ah, well the Vita has a much larger launch lineup, including Uncharted"

"I don't really care about that game, it doesn't look interesting"

*lists other launch titles like FiFA and Riiiiiiiidge Racer*

*watches loading bar reach right side of screen. Starts trying to read menus*

"It's got a touch screen on the back. If you preorder now you g....."

"It's not going to sell out. Do you know if I can hack it to run emulators yet? I might want one if I can do that"

"I don't know about that, Sony aren't going to et people just hack their consoles."

*chuckles*

"So, if you're interested in preordering..."

"I don't really think I am, no."

"Well, you get..." *lists tat like headphones*

"Yeah" *starts playing Wipeout. It looks GORGEOUS*

"So, if you like the look of Wipeout there and you'd like to preorder"

"No, I'm really not interested"

"OK, well, if you change your mind I'll be just over there" *gesticulates somewhere I'm not looking while I try to play Wipeout*

"..."

Now, the 'over there' he was talking about was one foot backwards from where he was stood over me in the first place. I might have really wanted one had I been left alone to have a go on the fucking thing. I might have fallen in love with the thing then and there. I'm sure there's a suspend mode to save loading the same thing over and over. I suspect the initial feeling I had that it feels shit and plasticy is just my surprise that they've made a quite light unit. I suspect my initial horror at the feel of the analogue sticks would have been addressed by a few minutes Wipeout if I'd been allowed to concentrate on that, certainly once it was in motion I was flinging the vehicle about like a good 'un, from what little I remember. I might have had a go on a few other games and decided that it was well worth a 'pre' order. But no, I walked out of the store.

One can only assume the rest of the world is following suit. They moot the Vita as the big company saver in the industry press then bully people out of caring about it.

Awesome. I imagined the security guard swiftly removing a black leather glove so he could help you with the touch screen.

Also, surprised about the load times thing. Haven't seen that mentioned yet by the ever so reliable gaming press.

Probably the shop situation and the threat of looming staff made it feel longer, but it wasn't in any kind of a hurry at all.

I bought my WII (2nd Hand) from GAME. The first one they produced had some brown stuff on the controllers, the drone behind the counter tried to pass it off. I said that it was either shit or chocolate and was he going to smell it and let me know. He then went off and produced a cleaner one.

They were also giving some game away with this WII that was costing at least £40. I wanted another controller so I asked him to trade in the game

Without me ever touching the game or the wrapper coming off it, he gave me £22 credit for a game that had never been used or opened, that cost £40 to buy!

Couldn't you 'return' the unopened game for a refund of £40 in accordance with the prophecy policy?

Peeked into GAME while I was out getting lunch. I think the Vita is their last hope as the place was papered in bad handmade posters exhorting you to preorder and get a "bonus pack", illustrated by an indecipherable photocopy of a faxed image of... something.

The whole "they make 2/3 their money off used games" was especially true, the new section was tiny compared to the enormous shelves for the "smeared and sat on" games.

£22 for a £40 (rrp) game is actually pretty good. Bearing in mind you can probably get that game for £30-£35 tops online.

I vaguely remember tweeting something to this effect on my last (probably in every respect) to GAME when trying to use a well-intentioned Xmas giftcard... I actually counted the number of xbox titles they had on the shelf that weren't "pre-owned" and the number was about 30 IIRC. Looking at the shelves made me wonder if there was a blockade at the ports stranding stock deliveries just north of the Channel Islands.

It sort of makes me think the software houses have a point... up to a point.

Things like Deadly Premonition I'd like to buy new for ten to fifteen quid, but where could I do that? Looking back through the first couple of years of XBox games, there's no new games on the shelves that are over two years old. Very few over one. The sort of thing I want to go into Game and buy... they don't sell at all.

I had a realisation a few days ago. I realised that, even if I wanted to go out to the shop and buy a new game, I have absolutely no idea where I could go to do that. None of the games shops around here appear to sell new games. For extra hard mode, interpret 'new' as 'actually not opened by anyone'. I remember when New games were freshly wrapped with a sticker on the edge.

If I'm paying (extremely unlikely hypothetically) full price for a game, I don't want some git bending my manuals. My misguided optimistic side says that if I were to take one of these proxy boxes (they can't honestly be SELLING THEM IN THIS STATE?!) to the counter, they'd give me the corresponding brand mega-new game from The Vault, Argos-stylee. But I know that's not going to happen.

Last time I bought a game that was new and properly sealed was... Blinx 2, seven years ago.

I've only ever had that happen in gamestation and Asda. Everywhere else I've had sealed copies. Can't say I'm fussed either way, mind.

I'm with MrD on this one. I've seen Game workers gutting Nintendo games and chucking away all the gumpf that comes with them, including the stars scratch off code.

I've had sealed copies from Game and Gamestation, when I've bought a big release on launch day. They seem to keep a stock of wrapped copies behind the counter for speed.

I also played with a PSP Vita for ten minutes and received no hard sell at all from the manager blokey, who was perfectly pleasant to talk to.

Yeah, that's Cwmbran though, where Game and Gamestation have got cool staff.

It's the fucking customers in those two stores that are the problem. Hope for Cwmbran they stay open though, or you've got Blockbuster and a piss-weak Sainsbury's left for your games, assuming HMV is still priced up by complete mentals.

I simply refuse to accept an unsealed new game from anywhere now after GAME sold me Modern Warfare 2 unsealed with a huge circular scratch on the DVD which meant it wouldn't even boot up. Quite clearly a faulty returned copy dumped immediately back on the "new" pile. If they can't offer me a brand new game sealed, I say "no thanks" and buy it elsewhere.

Actually, it was the Game in St David's II in Cardiff. ALthough you're right about the Cwmbran staff of both (the staff in Game are particularly excellent, to the point where I feel vaguely guilty that I never spend any money in there).

Hah, Blockbuster is gone-gone-gone. HMV is indeed still hella-pricey. I mostly shop online anyway, fortunately.

Cant stock 'new' titles

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012- ... everything

Quote:
Struggling retailer GAME has admitted it is unable to stock all new titles.

However, it has promised gamers that it will honour pre-orders for games that are currently on sale.

GAME has not been able to stock some new games in recent weeks, including 3DS game Tekken: 3D Prime Edition and all of Ubisoft's Vita launch titles.

In both cases word of their GAME no-show came just days - or the case of Ubisoft's Vita launch line-up, hours - before the games were due to go on sale.

GAME's problems stem from the loss of credit insurance with the banks, which has had the knock on effect of publishers asking it to pay cash up front for stock - something the retailer is struggling to do.

At last night's Vita launch, GAME Group Marketing Director Anna-Marie Mason told Eurogamer that games it has been unable to stock may, eventually, come into stock, and insisted the specialist retailer still plays an essential role in the success of the UK game industry.

How important is Vita's launch for GAME?

Anna-Marie Mason: It's hugely important and meaningful to us that we are Sony's official partner in the launch. This being a success, not just for us but the whole market, is really important. It's a launch we all need, beneficial for all the publishers that have got behind it as well in terms of software. We're all looking forward to the energy it gives us as an industry, and bringing customers back into our stores and to our online business.

Do you expect Vita to have a huge impact in that regard?

Anna-Marie Mason: We've genuinely been delighted by the reaction we've had from customers, particularly at the point where they've been able to get hands on with the unit in store. We've been running an awareness campaign both online and in store since before Christmas. Our hardcore gamers have been curious about the product for months and months, but it's transformed the customer interest at the point where they can get into one of our stores and get hands on with it. We've been very lucky that we've been the only retailer that's been able to offer that.

We are confident and we have an expectation this will be a success for us and for the rest of the industry.

Why do you say it's important for Vita to give the industry some energy?

Anna-Marie Mason: The traditional packaged goods market, year on year, has been in decline. Even at our most busy period last year, as an industry, that market shrunk, and it shrunk significantly.

So, doing what we do as an industry best, for a launch like this, is absolutely vital. Customers are beginning to understand the power of what this device can do. We feel it's got longevity as well, post launch, which is something we're excited about. We're planning for it to have a role in our business for all of this year.

You aren't stocking Ubisoft's Vita games. Can you explain to our readers who were looking forward to buying these games in store what's going on?

Anna-Marie Mason: The first thing I would say is, we are and have been determined to bring a market leading proposition and launch for this product, and want to give our customers the widest possible range of options at launch.

What I would say about the titles within the Ubisoft range is, we're not stocking them at this point, but this market moves really quickly, so that situation may change. With regard to the customers we have in both brands and whether they're online or in store customers, we've spoken to them all and apologised that that isn't something we're in a position to offer them right now.

But for the guys who really want those games, we've got a download option for them, so they're not missing out on the game perhaps they wanted as part of their launch experience.

Last week GAME confirmed it would not be stocking Tekken 3D Prime Edition and cancelled pre-orders just days before it was due to go on sale. This week you cancelled the Special Edition of The Last Story, which is due out on Friday. What's the situation going forward? Is it the case that you are not in a position to stock all new titles?

Anna-Marie Mason: No. Part of our success as a business and part of our success with customers is we have the widest possible range we can bring to market. With Tekken, that was a very difficult decision that our business didn't have that title. But with regards to the Ubisoft titles, that is one moment in time. It doesn't mean to say we won't have that title or that part of our proposition on an on-going basis.

So these games may come in stock in the future?

Anna-Marie Mason: They may do.

Why is this happening?

Anna-Marie Mason: There's no one specific reason. There isn't one specific catch-all reason. We do endeavour to give our customers the widest possible range, whether it's GAME, Gamestation, online or in-store.

We can't stock absolutely everything. That's just not possible.

Why not?

Anna-Marie Mason: You can see, there's a finite amount of space in a store. The same applies in a rational way to our online business. There isn't a definitive reason why we haven't been able to stock those two things most recently. But that may well change.

What message do you have to gamers who are afraid of pre-ordering with GAME because they're worried they may be cancelled at the last minute because you can't stock them?

Anna-Marie Mason: Well, we know our customers really well. Most of them have a really long history with us, and they know as a business we are absolutely committed to giving the best possible range as much of the time as we possibly can.

The instances we've had in the last couple of weeks are absolutely the exception, not the rule.

Can you guarantee pre-orders for games that you are currently selling?

Anna-Marie Mason: Absolutely.

What's the stock situation with the Vita hardware? Will you be able to go into a GAME or Gamestation today and buy one?

Anna-Marie Mason: That depends on the level of consumer demand. We've got really healthy deposits on this product, and we know customers are going to be from tomorrow all through the weekend and picking it up. Sony's advertising and PR has really started to kick in. We'd love to be in a position where we're selling as much of the product as we possibly can.

So everyone who's pre-ordered will be able to pick up their Vita?

Anna-Marie Mason: Absolutely.

Will those who haven't be able to pick one up?

Anna-Marie Mason: We've applied our normal stocking rules to this product where we ensure we have all the stock we need to fulfil everyone's pre-orders and deposits. And we have a sensible approach to ensuring we've got stock for customers who are coming on more of an impulse purchase basis.

What's the split between the Wi-Fi only and the Wi-Fi plus 3G models? Do you have the same amount of stock for each one?

It's fairly evenly split, for now. Once consumers get hold of it and get stuck into it, there may well be a swing. But it's too early to call.

Sony has committed to making all Vita games available to download as well as buy from high street shops. What impact does that have on GAME?

Anna-Marie Mason: A big part of what we offer to our customers is advice and education. The programme our store teams have been on with Sony in terms of understanding what Vita is capable of puts us in a great position to help customers understand what it can and can't do moving forward.

Will we have a commercial role in that value chain? I absolutely hope so. But for now, it's about bringing it to market and us connecting to our customers and making sure they're getting the most out of it. There's absolutely plenty to be getting on with.

Do you feel GAME has suffered unwarranted doom and gloom in recent months?

Anna-Marie Mason: The trade and consumer press will always have opinions. We're stood here tonight. We'll bring a market leading launch to our customers. We have a hugely relevant role to play in this industry. We're confident about that role.

It's not for me to say whether it's unfair or not. People are entitled to their opinions. But we're confident about what we're doing and we're locked on to the future rather than conjecture about the past.

Commenting on opinion, whether it's in the press, whether it's on forums, it's a pretty pointless exercise. Whether we were in the boom times or whether we were in slightly more challenging trading conditions, people would always have those opinions.

We've just got to get on with what we do best, which is be a specialist and have the unique role we play in the eyes of our customers, which is a multi-channel business that's different and has a huge advantage to others in the same market.

One problem we hear often is how expensive games are at GAME versus how much they are to buy from the likes of Play, Amazon and other online only retailers. Could your GAME prices be cheaper?

Anna-Marie Mason: It's well documented. In a marketplace like video games, there will always be somebody that's selling the game cheaper. That's not what we're about. We've never tried to be, or never wanted to operate like that.

What our customers get from us, whether they shop with GAME or Gamestation, is more than a sterile transaction. They get the opportunity to transact with us in the way they want and they get added value. Our customers will vote with their feet.

We still have two-and-a-half million people coming into our stores every week. Hopefully we've got something right.

And then despite the comments that if you pre-ordered then 'yes you'll get the game'

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012- ... s-deposits

Quote:
The troubles at GAME continue: the high street shop is NOT stocking Wii exclusive The Last Story at all.

Earlier this week GAME cancelled pre-orders of the Special Edition of the JRPG, but it has now gone one step further and cancelled pre-orders of the standard edition - only a day before launch.

The Last Story will not be sold in GAME stores this Friday, and its listing has been removed from Game.co.uk.

One Eurogamer reader was sent this email by a member of staff at GAME's support centre.

Hi XXXX,

Unfortunately we are no longer stocking The Last Story on Wii. If you return to the store they will be happy to refund your £5.00 deposit.

I apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Staff at Eurogamer's local GAME store confirmed that it will not stock The Last Story. They do not know if it will come into stock in the future.

News of the cancellation only adds to the troubles afflicting the specialist retailer - and Nintendo is yet again the focus.

Last week Eurogamer broke the news that GAME would not stock 3DS title Tekken 3D Prime Edition, a game distributed by Nintendo in the UK.

Earlier this week it emerged that Ubisoft's Vita launch line-up, which includes five titles, would not be stocked at GAME.

GAME is currently working with publishers on a title-by-title basis following its loss of credit insurance with the banks last month.

Eurogamer has contacted GAME for comment.

Apparently the bulk of the closures will be all of the Debenhams mini-stores.

I think the one in Cardiff is still there... so at one point there were FOUR Games in the city centre.

They could shut the Walsall Gamestation quite readily as no fucker goes up The Old Square anymore. Chester could also lose GAME or Gamestation as they're literally across the road from each other.

In Stockport, they are next door to each other. I have never understood that.

If you want to amuse yourself, find a news article about this in EuroGamer and post exactly what you just said.

The flood of indignation about your lack of concern for the employees who are losing their jobs will make for entertaining reading.

There's obviously a massive amount of wastage happening at GAME. I can't help thinking they'd be in a better position financially if they decided to scrap Gamestation entirely, close the stores and concentrate on GAME itself. What does keeping the Gamestation brand going in a recession offer them? Are kids really taken in by the "cool and funky rad" image and badly designed website?

I'd say the other way round. Gamestation stores give the impression of being cheaper even though this may not be the case, and there are fewer of them. Rebranding as Gamestation may give the company a shot in the arm from a change in perception.

Agree re the website though.

There are several in Bradford, which is odd. I assume that stuff gets stolen from there and then taken to the second hand shops to be sold, the money then going to the bookmakers.

Game about to go under?

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/02 ... more-96685

Quote:
Rock Paper Shotgun: Oof. High-street retailer GAME’s troubles are deepening, with reports that Electronic Arts will not be supplying them with games, including Mass Effect 3. Pre-orders the store has already taken for the title will only be refunded in store credit. While both EA and GAME have yet to confirm, the official Mass Effect 3 website has updated informing anyone that has pre-ordered ME3 to reorder the game from Amazon.co.uk, Play.com, Zavvi.com and ShopTo.net.

It’s not looking good.

According to reports, both GAME and Gamestation will not be stocking new games from EA until further notice, with snow-boarding title SSX being the last until whatever problems have arisen are sorted out. GAME’s financial difficulties have led to them having to shutter shops and allegedly being unable to stock new titles from Ubisoft for the Sony VITA launch. But EA are in a different league, and losing their titles is significant and hugely damaging.

What could happen if the chain goes under? Eurogamer’s take is rather terrifying: gaming needs GAME.

A taste:

The first thing to consider is where the 2.5 million people that walk into GAME and Gamestation shops every week go. To supermarkets? Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Tesco are regulars on Eurogamer’s many price roundup articles. They’re the obvious alternative. And they may “smell blood”, warns Don McCabe, joint managing director of indie video game chain Chips. “They’re like bloody sharks anyway. They spot HMV and GAME in trouble – if they smell blood and really go for it, they could wipe them out the market and they’ll share the market between themselves and online.”

I’ll update with confirmation/denials from either side if and when they arrive, but if you have pre-ordered Mass Effect 3 you might want to pop into where you bought it and find out what you need to do.

EDIT: Eurogamer have been sent what’s purportedly an internal memo sent to GAME store staff. According to the memo: “We committed to only stocking products on which we could get the right credit terms, regardless of the title or the supplier. We will not stock products if terms or conditions are not right for our business – we will not sacrifice long-term credit requirements for short term sales opportunities. As a result of us taking this position – a position we believe is critical to our long term health as a business – we have taken the very difficult decision to not stock EA’s March releases, including Mass Effect 3″.

It also points out that there will be no pre-orders taken for Fifa Street 3, Tiger Woods 13, or Sims 3 Showtime, and that people affected should be offered £5 in-store points.

It certainly looks like it. EA have just pulled Mass Effect 3 from being sold in their stores. And, y'know, every other future EA game too. And it sounds like Nintendo are following suit.

Despite myriad ridiculous pricing, I for one will miss Game should it go. It'll not only encourage further villainy from super-mega-a-lo-marts but it'll be one less place I can pleasantly browse during lunchtime, and even on the odd, strange day, pick up a surprise bargain from.

They clearly were dying though, and after all the pre-owned games retailing they won't be afforded much sympathy from the games publishers, that's for sure.

Yes. 'Lifebots.'

Now won't be stocking EA games, including Mass Effect 3, nor Ubisoft, nor Nintendo.

Um. That's a bit bad.

Indeed, it has to be the end. Ubisoft is a meh, EA is an uh-oh.

EA aren't worried that their main customer base (mindless chavs) tend to buy their copies of FIFA from GAME on their way back to the bus stop from the JobCentre/magistrates court.

Big supermarkets can't take up the slack completely, unless Didlidi are going to start selling new and used games to the aforementioned chavs (preorder bonus: game covered in breadcrumbs)

Can't Game survive on pre owned titles alone? CEX do, don't they?

I know it would be a radical reshape of their company and I clearly don't know what I'm talking about but if they concentrate on what they do well (that's buy and sell second hand games) then they could be alright. People are always wanting to trade old games in.

CEX seems to be more about DVDs and stolen phones these days. Their preowned game prices are outrageous, especially considering how dirty they are from prolonged exposure to the interior of a typical CEX shop and its pierced, sweating staff (and token girl, "Pixie" usually).
