This is a labour of love from some 4Chan users... it's an anime visual novel/H dating sim with a twist: the school (for such is nearly always the setting) is one for those with disabilities. Your potential love interests are all disabled: one has no legs, one no arms, one deaf/mute, one blind, and one horribly burned down half her body.

I'm loathe to use the term, but this looks to be a very important game.

It's also free, there are Windows, OS X and Lunix versions, so go download it if you're interested. And because of the subject matter, let's try and be nice?

Isn't it just! It's a bit of an in-joke for the late night Live crowd.

I'm not going to click on the link due to it being 4chan tossers, but is your character disabled too? Because at the moment it sounds like a pathetic attempt to generate controversy like Gummo's scene of the guy prostituting out his Down's Syndrome suffering sister.

Your character has arrhythmia and is transferred to the school as it has full-time medical staff and is near a hospital.

I'm not being so cynical about the subject matter. I've just met two of the girls and am learning my way around the school. The whole thing has beautiful artwork and excellent writing so far.

 So having a slight cardiac problem means being sent to a school for the disabled? Couldn't he have no chin or something? Like Dr Tongue from Day of the Dead.

Since when have schools for the disabled existed anyway? It's all about integration now.

He had a heart attack and spent four months in hospital, so it's quite serious. Like I said, the new school has 24 hour medical staff and a proper hospital nearby. Plus from a story point of view it's a convenient place to be away from one's parents and have some privacy with all the pretty girls.

My (real) high school had a huge hard-of-hearing department, and the school where I did work experience had a few blind students, including one with an awesome laptop that displayed in Braille.

I suppose that's part of why I'm interested in the game, I can sort of relate to some of it.

Did they have a competition to see how slight a condition they could think up to warrant being segregated from society for? Slight squint? GET HIM TO THE OUTSKIRTS OF THE VILLAGE! Evil witchchild!

Considering it's set in Japan, I'm surprised they're allowed to go to school (or out in public for that matter) at all.

Your character is trying to come to terms with suddenly finding himself 'segregated' and isn't happy about the situation either, as he had no idea he even had a problem until his attack.

I like these sort of games. I'm sitting here with a cup of tea, the game's soft muzak is lilting away and I'm very content, reading the story. It's a nice change from stabbing people in the neck in Battleduty 3: OORAH KILLS IRAN.

Greece have announced that paedophiles and pyromaniacs are to be classed as disabled now. Maybe the twats who made this game can get ideas from that.

Maybe melty-faced girl could be interested in you after another pyromaniac student done the melt, but you're a paedophile so the feeling's not returned. You have to keep trying to take toddlers into lockers or cupboards for some foul rumpy-pumpy, but Tucker Jenkins keeps interrupting you with a sausage on a fork.

I'm not. I'm immediately judging the people who made it as shits due to the 4chan link. If it evolves out of "wow, disabled people have feelings too" let me know.

I can assure you that aside from the fact the idea originated there, that's about as far as it goes, it's definitely not LOL WUT Y U NO HAVE ARMS.

I doubt I'll be able to convince you at this late stage, but I've now met all the girls and they're all very well characterized, they have a lot of personality. For example, one I had an early shine to is now losing her allure as I get to know her better, while another's frank world view has been quite refreshing. I don't really want to say more in case you do change your mind, reading it all for yourself firsthand is so much better (I even wish I hadn't read the character descriptions on the website while it was downloading).

Dave, they're completely overwhelmed by demand right now, they'll get web links to download it back eventually.

*trumpets* DIMRILL'S WILD PREDICTIONS *trumpets*

1- One will be cute and innocent.
2- One will be bubbly and young.
3- One will be superficially mean, but once you understand her more she'll soften.
4- One will be clever.
5- There'll be another one that will be quiet and is receiving forced enemas from the mean one.

John Walker doesn't like it that much (minor spoilers). I suppose it was always going to divide people, both with the subject matter and the presentation.

I think it's lovely. I'm trying to think which girl I like best (they're diverse enough that everyone will be put off almost immediately by at least one's character) and wondering whether one's friendship with another might be doing her more harm than good. It's quite fun listening to them and trying to work out their quirks from their behaviour. The hero's angst get a bit wearing at times but fortunately, given how little control we get for much of it, he seems surprisingly open to their suggestions and we're not left shouting 'NO, MORON, OBVIOUSLY YOU SHOULD DO THIS!'.

Will I want to finish it all five times? Probably not... at the moment I think there's two girls whose endings (ahem) I'd like to pursue.

Anyway, it's out there for those who want to try it. As I said before, I'm very happy sitting with a cup of tea (or indeed, some hot sake) and just tapping space to advance the text and read the story. For others that'll be the height of boredom, which is fine too.

EDIT: Dimrill's predictions are informed but not entirely correct in this case. The authors have seen enough romance anime to give us more nuanced characters than that, though there is truth to what he said. I really don't want to say more for fear of influencing people's opinions of the characters or spoiling the story. It's probably best approached with a fresh mind, and I'm trying to avoid discussion threads of it on other forums until I finish it at least once myself.

I'm trying to think of a game that features a character that's has an obvious physical disability that isn't part of the plot. I guess Batman has (er, fuck, Gordon's daughter) but you don't actually see her.

This is not true: Anytime he talks to his neighbour, it it quite clear that he should obviously NOT talk to his neighbour.

For some reason, although they don't offer a download, they do offer the first act as a download. It's... not what I expected.

His neighbour does tend to spring out at you. On the one hand the bits with him go on too long, but then the idea is that he does sort of corner you and you're stuck with him babbling at you.

Well, in the end I did get the full version, and play it through.

I rather wish I hadn't now. It's made me rather distraught. Full marks to them for managing that though.

Finished it yesterday.

Non spoiler thoughts: They do an incredible job capturing the feel of the awkwardness and anticipation of the early stages of a relationship. When merely looking at your lover was exciting, when she touched your shoulder made you tingle, when her leaning against you or breathing on you or hugging you made your head swim. It brought back lots of happy memories of my teens/20s with the excellent descriptions of the fumbling (not just sexual but verbal) around when you're not quite sure if your feelings are as strongly reciprocated.

I actually laughed when the protagonist lies in bed after a date and thinks to himself that this can't be true, something is bound to go wrong, it always does, FML. (that's one for the 'Does anyone else?' thread because I did that constantly from about age 14 until 21) Likewise, silly memories like your first few times spending the night, crammed together in a single bed, pillow fights ending with one unwittingly up atop one another, trying to stall the other person going home at the end of the night because you just don't want to be apart...

I'd almost say it is aimed at an older (late 20s onward) audience to remind them of their awkward young romances.

Anyway, my massively spoilerific (don't read if you're thinking of playing it) thoughts on the characters:
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Emi was my match, it seems. If I'm honest, I'd have never considered her a top choice, possibly second or third. I was actually more inclined towards Rin who I found much more interesting to talk to and be around.
Lilly struck me as extremely boring, sitting there all placid and elegant didn't really interest me. Hanako's timidness was off-putting, especially as you knew you'd only have her attention when Lilly wasn't there.
Shizzune was actually the one who caught my eye first in terms of physical attractiveness. Unfortunately, she's a bit bossy and the more I thought about the more I wished there was an option for my character to get a damned sign language book out from the library and learn some! I suspected that Shizzune would be much better in isolation from Misha but unfortunately they're joined at the hip and I suspect the bad parts of their personalities feed off each other. I'm keen to try her storyline (along with Rin) because you're invariably going to have to be alone with her at some point, away from both Misha and her club activities.

Oh, and his neighbour? He's a tosser, of course, but I think it might be deliberate on the behalf of the writers to suggest to all the horny internet geeks who'll be playing this hoping for some hentai to point out that locking yourself in your room making charts and fearing women isn't going to get you anywhere.

And even more spoilerific on my specific relationship:
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
As above, I honestly didn't think I'd like Emi, but screwing up all the other choices sent me onto her path (I do wonder if hers is the easiest one to end up on*) and I wasn't sure what I was going to do next.

Again, as a testament to the writers, I found myself falling in love with her through the excellent narration of the protagonist. In spite of myself I found that I was thinking about her and the story while away from the game.

Being thrown out of the house (not aided by an inappropriate choice of facial expression by the programmers - that should be her downright mischievous face, not her rage face) was so traumatic that I reloaded my previous save and had to click about two billion times to get back to where I'd been before, trying to get around my character going all Cole Phelps on her in the kitchen... only to find that the other choice gets you thrown out too!

Likewise, the elation when you confront her on the rooftop the following day, she tries the whole 'you're the knight coming to save the poor helpless crippled girl' defense again and you finally say the right things, that you're not charging to the rescue thinking she's helpless, you're going to stand with her to be there for her because god dammit I love you Emi, you say you can't bear to get close to someone in case you lose them but that's exactly what you're doing to me, please don't think I'm trying to interfere in what is a very personal problem for you and only you.

The final scene (thanks for spoiling, John Walker) of her sitting up in bed asking what you'd like to do today, and the poignant 'stay with me - not tonight, not forever, but just stay' were the perfect ending to an emotional rollercoaster, a happy ending without feeling forced or cheesy, things had worked out well for a reason.

Oh, and the now infamous bumsex scene? On the one hand it was a bit gratuitous, on the other it was again just young lovers experimenting and learning about one another.

*it appears, from the flowchart, that your first few choices are giving you either Lilly/Hanako or Shizzune positive marks, so it's possible to be equal. Agreeing to run when confronted by the nurse puts you on a course for Emi, I think

As I suspected, she's different when apart from Misha (which is good as Misha is even more obnoxious than Kenji the insane neighbour). A lot of her harshness seems to come from being naturally very disciplined and competitive, and she thus likes people who put in the effort.

Our hero has also finally twigged that he should learn sign language, and in the meantime he and Shicchan can pass each other notes.

Also, this arc features a classic line from Kenji when the student council gets mentioned:
"The president is insane, and never talks, only giving orders through flunkies."

As soon as I encountered Rin in the story again (the superfast skip mode stops working when you're at a bit you've not seen before, even if it's only subtly different) I wished I hadn't already set myself up for Shicchan but I'm saving her for later, I suppose.

Flunkyism is as hard to break into as gooning.
