Forget that bollocks 1950s cover-based shooter. A proper strategy remake of Enemy Unknown is coming, from goddamn Firaxis no less!

This is the announcement you've been waiting for: One of the most beloved strategy titles of all time re-imagined by one of the best strategy studios in the world. Firaxis Games' XCOM: Enemy Unknown introduces a wider console audience to what made the storied franchise great in the first place.

Unlike 2K Marin's previously announced XCOM shooter, which sparked tempers among longtime fans for turning its back on the series' cerebral roots, this title is a full-on strategy game that puts players in command of a global anti-alien defense force. XCOM's leader needs a worldwide perspective where threats are identified, populations reassured, and national leaders mollified – but a tactical mind is just as critical considering every shot XCOM's soldiers fire on the battlefield is under the player's turn-based control.

"It’s been a dream of ours to recreate X-COM with our unique creative vision. We’re huge fans of the original game and it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to re-envision a game that is as beloved as X-COM," said Steve Martin, president of Firaxis Games. "We were careful to keep XCOM: Enemy Unknown true to the elements that made X-COM such a revered game while delivering an entirely new story and gameplay experience for both die-hard X-COM fans and newcomers to the franchise."

I think I just came. Let's hope they don't screw it up.

I wonder how the shareholders of Xenonauts feel about this...

I would be slightly concerned, but I think they'll be okay as rumours are this could be a download-only game and that means it won't be as deep as Xenonauts.

Coincidentally, the X-Com games are Steam's daily deal. All £1.01 each or £3.05 for all five.

Am I the only person in the world that is looking forward to the XCOM shooter?

I'm looking forward to it as a game in and of itself, but I was disappointed when I found out it wasn't a proper strategy game. Now I'm not so fussed at all, with this and Xenonauts coming along to satisfy that, bring it on!

Unlike the download only Xenonauts then?

But to be honest, trying to make it too deep is the downfall of a lot of strategy games at the moment.

Emergent complexity from a simple and elegent rule set > the developer chucking in hundreds of half baked ideas.

Xenonauts isn't necessarily deep as it is an exact replica of the original X-COM. I think what Perkies is getting at is that this one should be even simpler, especially considering it's a console title as well.

And also by referring to it as a 'download' game, I think he means 'XBLA'-style as opposed to Xenonauts being - as above - a replica of what was originally a full retail title.

Simple can be good. Civ Rev was a great game on its own terms, and filled a niche the mainline Civ games haven't since the first one.

Yeah, being blitzkrieged after Gandhi declared my civilization an affront to humanity itself had been missing for too long.

You were probably a black person. Gandhi hated black people.
