The shark moment is when they put something in that is so jarringly out of context, that even the most ardent of fanbois will realise that the shiny polish has gone, and all that is left is a turd.

Except, of course, that Kissyfur's original objection was that the shark-jumping was awesome. So our usage of jumping the shark is in fact correct, and the internet is wrong.

Well, no - I think that the shark jumping was excellent, which is why I think that the general usage of the term "jumping the shark" is misconceived. You think the general usage of "jumping he shark" actually means what we think it should, not what it actually does, see.

Jumping the shark is used metaphorically. You belm.

Yes, that's the point, you belmaloid. It's used metaphorically to mean "now shit", as it refers to a literal shark jumping which, or so the general usage has it, marked the point of shitness of a previously much loved telly series. My point is that the literal shark jumping was atually awesome, so the metaphorical usage makes no sense.

It doesn't matter whether the literal event was shit or awesome, the reference is made to the turning point, the moment in history symbolised by that event.

And it was pretty shit anyway TBH.

Well it does matter in the context of THIS CONVERSATION IN THIS THREAD WHCIH IS ABOUT MY OPINION ON IT.

Despite the fact that seeing the Fonz jumping over a shark is all kinds of awesome, in the context of the show it makes as much sense as Craster does on a daily basis.

The event may have been a great televisual feast for body & soul, but it was also the signal that the Happy days script writers had snorted a bit too much inspiration, and anyone with any semblance of pathos with the show & its characters had long since gone off to newer pastures.

The major point is not whether the event is good/bad, but that it has no place ever of happening within the context of the show, and is an obvious sign that noone in the production team cares enough to wield any sort of editorial control any more.

I am incredibly confused right now. Chris is arguing against his own position (that's not confusing, obviously) and I can't figure out exactly what everyone else is (dis)agreeing with.

But then, I'm approaching the end of a third long day dealing with a Japanese colleague's reasonably poor grasp of English and infuriating Japanese tendency to pointlessly harp on about tiny little ineffectual details and my brain has had enough.
