My desktop PC is getting in the habit of crashing a lot, and it's a couple of years old, still running XP, blahblah, so my first thought was to rebuild a new desktop from scratch as I always have.

Then I wondered if I could be really bothered to do that, because the damn thing takes up a lot of space. I think I'd be much happier sinking the cash into a pretty nifty laptop that I can just plug my existing keyboard/mouse/monitor into instead. Less space, more flexible.

So... any recommendations for PC laptops? Capable enough to play things like DX: HR without OCing, and I'm guessing if it can do that it'll be suitable for whatever else I normally do with my PC. I'll be browsing the offerings of ebuyer and the like but have no idea what I should look for :)

Word of warning: Higher performance laptops like that tend not to lasst too long. Lesss ability than a desktop to disappate heat when hitting it hard as you would in 3d games.

Apart from some teething issues with the suspend function, I've been pretty impressed by the performance of my Dell XPS 15 so far. It seems to run any game from the last couple of years at high specs. Some of the aniseed tropical filters etc need to be turned off though. Also the speakers are incredibly good (for laptop speakers, obv).

I hate playing without aniseed tropical filters on

I am generalising as I don't really care about those sorts of things. I just hit play in Steam and let it take care of the graphic settings. They look better than the 360, if that helps?

I have never used AA or FSAA on any game. Don't really see the point. Not that I've played anything other than Minecraft on the PC for about 3 years. Portal was the last PC game I played properly.

Are you sure you've been playing Minecraft all this time and it's not just that all your games look like Minecraft?
:D

Dell Refurb shop! Had some fairly high end 17" laptops in when I looked last week.

Does anyone know of any better spec laptops for same moneys or same spec for less?

Ive had a quick google and couldnt find any. Mainly used for internet, homework and minecraft/sims.

I was offered a laptop by 3 when cancelling an account with them recently. It would have cost me £360 over 2 years. 1gb ram, 1.6ghz process (no. cores unknown) 10" screen. I would have got a super high speed modem, 5gb internet and 100 texts a month with it. Should I have taken them up on their offer?

Yes. If it didn't cost you any more than what your current contract is, that is.

No, if you went to a sim-only contract at a reduced price.

I just had to continue on my contract for another 2 years and I was cancelling as I no longer have any use of a contract. I only spend around £5 a month on my phone anyway and that deal didn't include calls.

If you don't need your contract, cancel it. The free laptop sounds like a cheapo netbook anyway. The 1.6ghz means it's probably a single core atom, so basically it's at least a year old already.

I'd say, nah.

I was at the time calculating it on £360 over 2 years for a laptop as the service itself was unnecessary. I could use another laptop though after I dropped the last one I had and it stopped booting. I could probably do with getting another laptop actually. What can I get for about £100?

An uncomfortable adjusting of your expectations.

A trip to Cash Converters. And then a trip to the cash machine to get another £100.

Yeah, thats what I thought. Does any one have a similar spec'd laptop who can confirm if sims would run on it ok? FPS > prettiness

They do a model with an ATI gfx card, but I couldnt actually find any on sale. It costs €500 (not sure £'s equivalent).

Laptop criteria:

1: Costs £400 or under
2: Has a non-shiny screen.
3: Will be capable of editing video using, say, Pinnacle Studio or Vegas or something. So probably has dedicated video ram/processor.
4: Built to last. Is Lenovo still the last word in hardiness these days?

What's with all those glass screens they have nowadays. Go in PC World and 99% of laptops are reflective. Fuxache.

I know. I think the 17" MBP is the only one with an anti reflective screen option.

Put Hotukdeal's "hot deals" RSS in your feed reader of choice and scan it twice a day for laptop deals. Best way to get a great price that I've found.
