Things I have learnt this week:

The Lenovo Ideapad is a lovely little machine.
Windows 7 networking and file sharing is utterly hateful, it was actually easier to copy files from an OSX machine to a Windows 7 machine, than it was between two Windows 7 machines, which is ludicrous.

Windows 7 filesharing was not helped by the addition of Homegroups. Bizarrely, I had to move my media server back to XP to stop videos hitching. Pain in the arse.

But the NAS has solved those problems.

Indeed, rather than fixing the filesharing in Vista, they add yet another option on top for Windows 7 :D
I got it working in the end, but to be honest, I have no idea which combination of radio buttons and passwords it took.

I'm secretly pleased I don't understand anything you guys are talking about. Clearly my brain has more room than yours for being awesome, as it is not filled up with nerdy miscellania.

First thing I do with a Windows 7 install is completely disable Homegroups - not just turn it off, but disable the two services involved in Control Panel.

Then I uninstall Media Center and forcibly disable the Media Player streaming services.

Disabling home groups seems like something I should do... I didn't realise you could though. I'll have a look tonight.

I've never thought to disable it... but I will. As for Media Center... well I use it for my main TV, so that can stay :)

Thanks everyone.
Went ok this morning, and now I've committed to it I feel a lot more relaxed about it all.
Found out that the first part will be an operation to remove two wisdom teeth which are in the way of where they need to cut. I think they'll also use it to see how well I take to general aneasthetic. Then, as already described, a long period of braces before they break my lower jaw, move it forward, and re-attach it.
Not only will I probably never be bored at airports again, but it should stop me gnawing away at the roots of my front teeth, and give me a better and less goofy smile too! But I'm doing it for medical reasons, to reduce problems in 20 or so years, and not for vanity: apparently the wear on the upper teeth is already a cause for concern.
Don't think it'll affect my speech, at least not after they remove the braces, and my manly beard will remain unaffected (and was cited in an earlier report as serving to hide my current disfigurement!)

I'll keep you updated on my progress.

I know someone who had something similar done, it made a huge difference to her and says it's the best thing she's ever done. Even within the first few days of getting it done and while her jaw was wired she was really happy she'd gone through with it.

I'm sure everything will be fine and 18 months probably won't feel like that long when you look back on it! Good luck, it'll be worth it :)

rare chance at a throughsilver emo post.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
SO there's this woman at work who I like. We don't work on the same floor and don't get a chance to talk, but I've noticed her and I've noticed her noticing me. Anyway, we have a mutual friend, who tells me she's single and been on dating websites and ting. Mutual gets a new job elsewhere about a month ago, and decides to invite us both to her leaving do, so we can meet properly.

About a week after that plan, it turns out the woman I like has been seeing someone for a few weeks. Drat! And just after that, I learn that another friend of mine knows her, but only just befriended her on Facebook. Double drat!

Leaving do happens this evening, and the woman and I get on really well. So annoyed!

I feel dirty even writing that.

When I was 16 I was going to have something like that done, so I went on a waiting list, then when I turned 18, I came off that list, and got put on an adult list, then by the time I was about 20 it was my turn, and the problem had sorted itself out and I didn't need the operation any more. I got shouted out over the phone when I told them this...

I hope your orthadontist/doctor combo is better than mine, I am sure they will be.

edit: the other (girl) kitten is going to the vets tomorrow to be spayed. This will not help our already strained relationship.

I have queries.

1) How have the protesters remained outside St Paul's?
2) What are they protesting about, as 'capitalism' is a broad church?
3) How have the pitched their tents on concrete?
4) Why does the UN care about Gaddaffi getting one in the noggin, and not the US popping over a sovereign border and offing someone sans trial?
5) Does the UN actually do anything, at all, ever?
6) Will my illness last all weekend?

Right to free assembly, I'm assuming

I doubt they have the faintest idea

Mr Chris is our local tent erecting expert, we should ask him.

Dunno

Yes. It compromises. It's very good at it.

My sources say yes.

It was books 1-4. So I got that.

Good stuff - enjoy!

It's very good, better than the telly series. Thanks for the recommendation. Rattling through it, thanks to my Kindle cover with a light. Kindles are amazing things, everyone should have them. It's better than my iPod Touch, and I rate that very highly.

MrsA went with her friend to see a film, which I wanted to go and see, but couldn't as I'm poorly, and she just called to say it was excellent. Prior to that, my friend J called, to say that he's got a book deal, and was I thirsty for many beers tonight. Which I can't go to, and due to clashing schedules, I'm not sure when I'm going to see him, as he's been working at this for years now. Stupid MrsA.
