Quote:
Microsoft announced on Wednesday a massive range of deals with high profile TV providers worldwide.

The deals will see a number of TV and entertainment channels coming to Microsoft’s Xbox LIVE service. Highlights include Bravo, Comcast, HBO GO and Syfy in the United States and BBC, Channel 4 and Channel 5 in the UK.

Xbox users will need the latest dashboard update, due later this year, to experience live TV with Xbox LIVE. Microsoft is planning to make the TV channels available to Xbox LIVE gold subscribers and some partners will integrate Kinect experiences with their TV channels. ”Today’s announcement is a major step toward realizing our vision to bring you all the entertainment you want, shared with the people you care about, made easy,” said Don Mattrick, president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. “Combining the world’s leading TV and entertainment providers with the power of Kinect for Xbox 360* and the intelligence of Bing voice search will make TV and entertainment more personal, social and effortless.”

UK-relevant providers I've heard of include the BBC, Channel 4, Channel 5, BSkyB, Last.fm, Lovefilm, MSN/MSNBC. There's also some UK also-ran companies I've not heard of: AlloCine, Crackle, Muzu, Vevo. Youtube, Twitter and Facebook are in there too (as in the current dash).

I'm pleased as the TV in the basement has no aerial, so the ability to stream content to it through XBox live would be brilliant. Now all need is an XBox wireless adaptor and a subscription. it;s a good job it's my birthday on Saturday, isn't it?

that is superperb, I was just thinking it would brilliant if I had one device that could stream bbc/itv/4/5/sky to my TV, and now it looks like soon I'll have one!

Just need to get the sound working again on that TV now...

Is that just live TV or the TV catchup services as well? I'd love to have access to iPlayer etc via the Xbox.
Sounds good though, I really like having sky player on the xbox and use it all the time. It's especially great when I'm tired after work and want an early night but there is football on. Then I just take it upstairs and watch the football live from Sky Sprots via my Xbox. Truly, we live in great times.

Oh, this is awesome. This entirely does away with any further conversations about needing a sky dish.

That said, are any of the newer 360 models quieter than the monstrous bastard Grim... sold me?

Yes.

Is that still going? Is it an original 360?

Or get Homeplugs. I've had no end of grief with wireless connectivity on the xbox, largely because tackling settings and routers is an exercise in gibberish for me.

Now I get an excellent, solid ethernet connection into my Xbox and don't have to fuck about with wifi. My D-link plugs probably cost the same as a wireless dongle (about £50).

And you get the added thrill of voodoo magic that is homeplugs.

This consumer broadcast was brought to you by caffeine. And homeplugs.

I think it's an original one, yes. Still going strongly (if about as loud as a vacuum cleaner)

Did you ever get a larger hard drive to install your games on? That cuts down a lot of the noise.

These Homeplugs look fairly cheap, 2 for £33. I'll have a think.

Yep - I run most games off the HD. However, despite that it's still fecking noisy. I even replaced the fan with a "quieter" one.

Have BBC confirmed? They previously wouldn't supply iPlayer to MS, because MS want Gold subscription to have access only, but BBC's ethos is free to everyone (who pays for it)

MS seem to have capitulated to that: The BBC stuff is available to all users, you won't need a gold account. Some of the other announced ones will be for live gold only.

Windows phone apps to control your Xbox too? That could be interesting... I like the idea of having a phone connected to my Gamertag but I don't like the idea of it also thrusting Facebook at me for all it's worth.

WP7 doesn't thrust facebook at you at all. Your contacts on the phone are your regular contacts, plus your facebook contacts, plus your twitter contacts, is all. And it has its own built in feed viewer for those services.

I meant to my other TV, and I also mean things like iplayer and 4od and so on.

In all honesty, I haven't messed with a WP7 yet but I would like to... Although, I am becoming rather reliant on Google through Android.

You can't change channels. If you like, I can sell you a proprietory connector for your iphone that'll let you do it? It's got a dock connector on one and, and a WP7 phone on the other. It will cost a million pounds.

Interesting news. I've been wondering for a while when the mooted YouTube on XBL would finally be appearing, but this is even nicer news. It'll be interesting to see if:

[a] It's all catch-up, or live streaming broadcast TV. If it's the latter, it means anyone owning an Xbox 360 and a TV without equipment capable of receiving TV broadcasts will now have to shell out for a TV licence. Though of course, that's presumably only about 12 people.

[b] Whether the offering from Channel 4 will include the full 4OD experience including loads of brilliant programmes from their history (as seen on the web), and not just their 28-day catch-up service (as seen on the 4OD iPad and iPhone apps). I really hope it's the former, it'd be lovely to be able to stream This Is David Lander or Paul Merton: The Series onto my proper telly without having to resort to all manner of trickery.

[c] You'll be able to log into your YouTube accounts and access all your playlists and whatnot. My Panasonic Blu-Ray player's Vega mode offers that functionality, though it falls over each time it reaches something a bit complicated (i.e. a Vevo video, a 4OD video, or something no longer available in the UK).

Nah, I've nae telly anymore & the tv license man keeps making noise about how I'll be prosecuted if I've been watching live stuff on my pc. Obviously my response is that I havenae & he should consider vacating my home :)

If I watched much telly I'd buy another one, not sit & gawk at a wee computer monitor.

:This:
Which is why I watch everything on my xbox and big* monitor telly thing.

So I welcome the addition of iPlayer as it means less messing with sickbeard to get programs. I'll be watching a lot more TV from now on but still don't want to go down the aerial / tv license route.

Once setup, Sickbeard is the ultimate in no messing. How can doing nothing to get programmes be more messy that doing something?

No, but there's a big difference through browsing through a list of programmes like on iplayer, seeing one you might like and clicking to immediately view, compared to:

Making a mental note of it - actually remembering that - messing with the sickbeard interface to find the right programme (which it isn't always in the case of facty bbc stuff) - waiting several days if it's something recent - remembering that you've downloaded it and to watch it. And then turn it off after 10 minutes because it's rubbish.

For example, that BBC 4 electricity thing, I need to remember to get that. It's a hassle.

For serieses - sure, sickbeard is the way forward.
