56, but he seemed to pack a fair bit into those years.

I knew he's been fighting cancer for some time but it's still quite shocking.

Really sad he's gone.

Seems like the internet is divided between remembering that he was a bit of a bastard and people doing pictures of crying macs and proclaiming the death of the messiah.

No-one should only make it as far as their fifties though, and some kid has lost their dad, which is awful.

You'd have a sex change. Fair enough, I'm sure we'd all make an effort to do something out of the ordinary with our remaining time.

I'd want a space rocket that fliues slowly towards the sun, a month's worth of food, a month's worth of weed... and probably a mute redhead with a similar prognosis and a nice arse.

:DD

Sad news even though I am not a big fan of Apple products I have always been a fan of Mr Jobs and what he did for the technology market.

That sums my feelings up neatly. It also applies to this story - Graham Dilley, former England bowler, dying at 52.

Yeah, wow. Say what you like about his divisive nature but he was certainly a smart bloke and we need smart blokes. People are saying that when we look back in decades to come his name will rank with industrialists like Ford and Edison. Time will tell on that.

Lots of fascinating and touching remembrances popping up around the web, like Jobs testing Photobooth in 2005 and Brian Lam of Gizmodo, reflecting on that stolen iPhone prototype. My favourite, though, was a touching piece written a few weeks back by his neighbour. That last one is a rare view of Jobs as just another guy, crying with pride at his son's graduation party. Like GY said; some kid has lost his father.

So it goes.

I was discussing this with Mrs K this morning. I'm not a big fan of Jobs as a person (perhaps a result of having read The Register for 10 years or so...), and I'm not a fan of the way Apple does business or of Apple products or their effect on consumerism/Chinese workers/bla blah blah.

BUT. He was briliant at what he did. That's not enough in life, no, but even if you're not a fan of him or his products he has, undeniably, helped drive technology forward. Mrs K said there aren't enough risk takers like him around - there are a handful about, mainly who own their own companies, but there are very few these days, and it's sad to have lost one of them.

And, as GY said, someone has lost a dad. Any death, ever, whoever it is, is always sad as it will have effects on other people.

A great shame, but sadly not a surprise I thought he might have been given "terminal" news when he resigned from Apple earlier in the year.

What he did with Apple in terms of products and company success was amazing

Using an IPad to type this, it's still the best tablet on the Market, we are using 1000 or more of them now, it's a testament to the design of the iPad as its more a consumer than enterprise device.

Does show how fragile our lives are though. Even with billions at his disposal he still died far too young.

This reminds me that dying sucks, but also that a lot of worthy people die everyday, unnoticed.

Respect for anyone that makes it so well in business, but no personal feelings of grief here.

It's a shame to learn that he might have survived if he had looked into wiser treatments. If he's susceptible to that sort of nonsense, so are a fuck of a lot of others.

Mr. Kissyfur nailed my general feeling, though.

The outpouring s are really doing my stove in now. Obama thinks he invented the smartphone, Laverne reckons he invented either mp3s or walkmans or something.

His achievements:

1: Marketing Wozzer's computers
2: Getting the Macintosh right eventually
3: Pixar
4: OSX... eventually
5: Getting new technology more popular by reducing the number of buttons on it, making it shiny and reducing the functionality until it stopped being scary.

All of which is fair enough and in some cases very important, but he didn't 'change the world' in the way people are saying he did. 5 Live just had on some evangelical Apple believers saying how sad they were. I've known that for years.

True GY. He didn't solve world hunger, or cure incurable diseases. He made some fun technology and a lot of money by selling it. Smart, respectable, but not Jesus.

And y'know, all Amy Winehouse did was sing songs. Same sentiment.

Gutted and, for perhaps the second time in my life (John Peel being the other), genuinely upset about the passing of someone I've never met. I guess it's all about how someone affects your life, and Jobs through his work affected mine.

People talk about Jobs being a tough man, and an unlikable person, but that story Doctor Glyndwr posted to has long been one of my favourites about Jobs, showing that underneath everything, he was just a guy. But he was also a guy with wisdom, not least in his wonderful address to Stanford, which I'll be watching again today.

56 is far, far too young. But: stay hungry; stay foolish—until the end.

Quote:
he didn't 'change the world'

Making technology accessible to the masses has changed the world, and Jobs was instrumental in that throughout his life. He didn't invent the tablet, but he was instrumental in taking it to a place where even children and blind centenarians can easily interact with it. It's not world peace, but it's something, and it's more than most.

I pretty much agree, I'm just sick of the quasi religious personality cult bullshit he cultivated, which today is frothing at the gash more than usual. There are certainly genuine cases of upset people but half the shit I'm reading seems to be bandwagon grief and Apple-related one-upmanship from people who can't get an iPhone 5 before their mates just yet. I dread the beatification process which is probably to follow. When the founder of twitter pops his clogs, we won't get people braying about how he liberated the middle east but the guy who told a guy to design a phone that uses twitter just did, by a number of total dicks.

Ah, I'd probably not even be arsed if I hadn't just survived another disproportionate phone launch jizztorrent. Plus I'm on nights to by the time everyone else started banging on about it I'd already given it plenty of my brain's processor cycles and was happy to leave the news behind. I'm sorry, I'll shut up now.

Interesting list of the 317 Apple patents that list Jobs as one of the inventors.

I don't disagree with your sentiments, GY, and I stand by my comments in the Amy Winehouse thread that I am puzzled by people who feel actual grief when someone they don't know dies. However I do think that
GovernmentYard wrote:

is somewhat underselling Jobs's legendary micromanagement and aggressive sticking-his-nose-in management style. I've never read anything from anyone who met him that suggested he was a sitting-back-in-his-chair ordering-others-to-do-stuff kind of boss, so I do think he deserves more credit for the modern Apple product lineup than you are suggesting (as much as I've always felt it's unfair to downplay the contribution of the other 50,000 people on Apple's payroll).

Keep in mind that Wozniak's technical contributions to Apple were very, very early. He didn't work on the Macintosh, for example, which was a project personally overseen by Jobs with a small team of engineers.

Heard him described as techs Ford or Edison. Which seems fair enough to me. Brought product to the masses, flair for marketing, production and design and sometimes a bit of a bastard to work for.

The influence Apple have had in the past decade will still be felt in 20 years or more. It is one hell of a legacy and grieving fanboys aside, the plaudits are deserved.

Oh, totally, yes. Hence I gave him props for the mac, saying eventually to reference the Mac II which was the first decent one. Well, I say decent, I laughed at it and went back to my Archimedes. Then again, I'm not a rich designer sort.

On another note - why are some people so shocked he's dead? Months ago he came out looking like Freddy Mercury in the 'Days of our Lives' video and he's had cancer for longer than most people have had iTunes. On Phoneageddon day, Tuesday or whenever it was I saw a picture of Not Steve Jobs doing the keynote and wondered to myself when we'd be getting the news.

You know it's the odd thing about the internet you never know who is reading. I've said this before, John Peel was a friend of my family, introduced my parents and was best man at my uncle's wedding. All the good late 60s/70s radio Caroline insanity was way before my time (my uncle emigrated and everyone sort of drifted around the country and lost touch) so it effected my parents far more than me but the stories are always awesome. We miss the old sod very much so nice to see other people saw him the same way.
