It would be interesting if it wasn't for the fact that the author seems to think that 'falsify' means 'to prove to be false' instead of 'to fake'.

Quote:
Falsifiability or refutability is the logical possibility that an assertion can be contradicted by an observation or the outcome of a physical experiment. That something is "falsifiable" does not mean it is false; rather, that if it is false, then some observation or experiment will produce a reproducible result that is in conflict with it.

Y-Pylon has the advantage that left over ones can be used as vast, Beano-style catapults with the simple addition of a 100 yards of industrial elastic.

Yeah, got to be 1 or 4.

4 is very wind turbine-esque, so that ties in. I like 1 because it's a bit continental.

 I just went to book hotel rooms in germany for my uncle, went to the site, spent 5 mins trying to find the English version and then went "wait a second...I can read fucking german...."
:wrong:

edit: I can't understand the English version of this best western 180 (Euro) a night hotel though.
"The very central location ensures that you never destination longer than absolutely necessary need"

"Recommendations for Events, Trade Fairs and Congresses in Munich!
Oktoberfest whether or BAUMA whether Bundesliga or Bon Jovi - in Munich is always something going on.
With our events and trade fairs in Munich Munich you never miss an event more. Browse our proposed dates or during trade fairs and get in our 4-star hotel of your calm haven before and after the event."

I think not. For 180 euros a night I would rather book a place that doesn't stick it all in google translate and prey.

I've seen a pylon loop being taken down over a course of several days on Hackney Marshes a couple of years ago, when they were removing the overhead cables for part of the prettification of the marshes for the Olympics project. As you can imagine, due to the tension and weight of the cables, it was quite a fascinating thing to watch.

Or hold alt and hit numpad 32.

Or press the windows key, type osk, and press return.

Anyone else want to see the car crash that is a Charlie Sheen sitcom without Charlie Sheen?
http://bit.ly/nWpO8Q
Place your bets now as to whether the decision to carry on was as bad as the one to carry on 8 Simple Rules when John Ritter died.

It can't beat that. The fact that they actually had the character of the girls' dad die, in what was supposedly a sitcom? That was just bizarre.

I thought Ashton was pretty funny.

Also, it's on Comedy Central.

Sat in the VIP lounge at Salt Lake City airport, with four hours to kill before the first of my flights back home.

Given enough free alcohol, I might actually be able to sleep on the plane!

It's because your stuck in a Truman Show type reality television show and they need time to change the massive set to look like a new place because airplanes don't really exist and your not actually travelling anywhere.

Better than a divorce. Hard to make a sitcom out of that ongoing trauma.

Why is the Y-Pylon not called the Y-lon?

Disagree. Divorce is easy, you just pretend it isn't traumatic and then you have a whole world of jokes available about the ex being a shrew and alimony payments being a bitch (see Two and a Half Men). It's a lot trickier to pretend that the death of one of the leading roles isn't traumatic.

Y'know, the y-pylon is pretty cool, see there's no separate insulators? The arms themselves are the insulators - must be made of fibreglass like a wind turbine's blades. On the other hand the two lower conductors look too close together to be practical and the wire pattern isn't as pleasing as the more parallel ones. Maybe that's just the "camera" angle though.

Energy question!

We have a shower that heats the water itself, like a lot of people, I expect. It does a good job, too.

So - why aren't all hot water outlets like that? Why have a storage tank?

The only answer I can think of it "baths". Or are the mini-heaters horribly inefficient?

They're almost 100% efficient. But they use pretty much your properties' whole electricity ampacity for a fairly low speed flow of water - think filling the bath from the shower head?
They also use electricty, obviously, and it's cheaper to heat water with gas.

Combi-boilers are very common now though, they do heat the water on demand, using gas, but obviously as a big complicated piece of kit with a flu outlet, can't be on the wall of your shower (these days). SO it's centralised and runs to all the taps.

We have a shower that heats the water itself, like a lot of people, I expect. It does a good job, too.

So - why aren't all hot water outlets like that? Why have a storage tank?

The only answer I can think of it "baths". Or are the mini-heaters horribly inefficient?

I suspect the answer is cost of change. A fair number of new properties come with combi-boilers rather than a water tank, but they just weren't around when most houses were built...

Do 'smart' boilers exist? I was wondering if I'm not heating the water too much at the moment (both in terms of time and temperature) but have no idea, beacause there's no feedback on usage or anything (beside "the hot water has run out"). is there nothing that can monitor usage and 'learn', or at least give me information?

Has anyone ever bought anything from CEX online? Fuck me they're slow. I ordered something a week or so ago and I keep checking the order status each day. It seems to progress to another stage once every two days or so. "Order Received" "Stock Picking Commenced" "Stock Picking In Progress" "Stock Picking Complete". I think they must have a giant warehouse staffed by just one shuffling, wheezing geriatric. I can only imagine how many more tasks the poor old giffer is going to need to complete before he'll finally be able get my item to the post office.
