Today I received a 1TB external hard drive.

Because I don't want numerous profiles on it, or files over 4GB, and I want it to play nice with my PS3 and Mac, I decided to format it to FAT32.

So I went into my cmd, did the format /FS:FAT32 X: and waited.

It got to 99% done, and instead of being finished, it decided the volume was too big for FAT32. Nonsense; FAT32 goes up to 2TB, right?

Anyway, it's since gone invisible (not just RAW). I'm trying things. DISKPART? (I have no idea how to do that.) Acronis thingy (which doesn't even seem to do FAT32, but I want my drive back)?

Assistance please.

Much obliged.

Ok it's hard to type this without it sounding like one is taking the piss,. Windows 7 often spazzes out with USB ports and shenanigans happen (I got 4 externals running and swearing at microsoft is the norm "why is my music off? What the fuck? You are there"). Take USB out, turn pc off and on again, put usb in different slot. If that does not work you will have to return the drive.

Can you still see it in disk management (control panel > administrative tools > something something (sorry, I'm still in bed))?

I get the same I have 2 of those HD docks on E-Sata and usualy its 3 attempts before I get a disk seen in Windows 7. It plays havoc with my 360 drive as that is 2TB Fat 32. I have chkdsk running for 24 hours sometimes

Acronis True Image Home will format a drive to FAT32

I turned it off overnight, and I've swapped the HD with the mouse in the USBs. Still no joy. :(

Acronis could see it last night, but I didn't see an option to change from NTFS.

I've attached some pics in case they help.

Now Acronis has seen it, so I figured I'd just format the bastard to NTFS and maybe do a smaller partition later.

Until...

Bastard.

On the plus side, this, I suppose. Is there a plus side?

Well the disk is definitely there. It's just whether there's a drive on it.

GNUParted is always my go-to for stuff like this. Because it's linux based it gets you round any issues Windows may be having with the drive.

I'm on my folks' device at the moment, though.
