A song questioning the sexuality of a baseball player must surely get points from me! Shame it's not a very good song though...

Is Sheryl Crow a punishment song, or is that a location?

I can only assume it's referring to "Santa Monica Boulevard".

Also, the cheek of implying that I don't choose punishment songs to fit the themes!

I've not listened to the others, but "Holland, 1945" is one of the best songs EVER, so will almost certainly get my vote.

It certainly isn't a particularly good selection this time is it?

If you don't like Neutral Milk Hotel I can only assume your souls were removed at birth, and replaced with a cold, hard stone with the lyrics to Poison's "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" written on it to guarantee you have an awful taste in music.

:D

If you do like it, then I suggest you have no interest in music that sounds like the person performing it gives more than 2 shits about what they're doing. It sounds like he was worried about a pan boiling over or something. ;)

You, sir, have no soul. He's singing about death and love and Anne Frank and stuff.

It was also listed at the 7th best song of the decade for the 1990s by Pitchfork.

I agree. Only The Teenagers' song was almost mediocre, so I voted for that.

Belle and Sebastian - Not good.
Neutral Milk Hotel - Neither is this.
Sheryl Crow - I think this is the best song in the group and I'm not a massive fan of it...
St Etienne - ZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz
The Teenagers - boring.

So that's me saving some points this week!

I'm clearly in the minority, but I thought this was a very strong set of choices from the Group A jury. If they throw a party with a playlist like this, I'd SO be there. (I'd go for a wee when Sheryl Crow's song was on, obvs.)

Teenagers > St Etienne > Neutral Milk Hotel for me. Bit surprised no-one chose "It's Grim Up North" by the KLF. Which would have been extra-excellent if it'd actually been chosen by Grim*.

(*Except he's not in this group. Aw.)

Well, there are no songs about the time you went to Craster. Or the toilet. So it's hardly a surprising conclusion.

It's probably the best there, but boy could it do with something happening in terms of dynamics.

I wonder if people realise that GirlVII features lots of tube station names in the middle.

Nope. Stopped listening well before the middle.

It's understandable really, it's not Etienne's best song.

I finished listening before you.

I think the given thing here is that I will inevitably take an immediate and severe dislike of any of Nigel Henges submitted songs.

Who's to say I submitted that ONE?????111?!?11/1?

Well yes I did obv. BUT THAT'S NOT THE POINT.

Not sure what the point is actually.

Anyway I'm not Nigel Henge anymore - I'm Derekfumeh

I think I might have done better selecting Coventry earlier. Can I go back in time and change it please?

I had to listen to it, because somebody didn't tell me what it was, so I had to try and make out the virtually inaudible lyrics and then google them.

Why didn't you just reply and say 'what the fuck is this shit?' and then put a punishment song in when you didn't get a response in time.

The album that the Neutral Milk Hotel track is from is a bit of a "masterpiece". I only first heard it about 6 months ago, and it took a while to get into, but it is one of the most powerful recordings I've ever heard. I don't think that this track is a very good example of the general sound as it does sound a bit loud and rushed, it's difficult to hear the words and be bothered about the context.

I strongly urge anyone who hasn't heard the album to give it a shot.

I've heard better Belle and Sebastian songs... 'Ooh Stick You' and 'U.G.L.Y' are much more upbeat and fun.
