Oh hell no - I noticed (and cursed myself) right away!
Can't believe how close it came to me - it was barely six feet away at one point. I guess being a Provincial Park deer, you become rather accustomed to idiots with cameras.

Thanks for the comments folks!

Joys of photographing animals with primes, do I accept the fact that I just cut the feet off or do I attempt to move back and hope they stay still?

With my dog it normally goes.

Take pics from the moment you see your subject and edge nearer taking more as you go. That's what I tend to do.

Heh, I get that with my parent's lovely dog, Chester. Soon as you get that camera out, they want to get close to you. And it's a surprising number of f-stops to get both that snout and those eyes both in focus. Worth spending an hour to get right though, the results are lovely. And just go for the head is my advice, you'd go crazy otherwise.

I like the first one very much but might I be so bold as to suggest that your B&W conversion made it too dark. (It's not so much as a problem the larger you go though) I had a play in PS with the large version, brought the brightness up and messed with the curves, I really hope you don't mind. /hides

edit: read down.

Oh, I don't mind at all, Decca. I kept it quite dark simply to try and convey a bit of the atmosphere of the place. It's an old, abandoned cemetery from the 1870's - used by silver miners and their families. All of the graves are falling apart and there's a very claustrophobic and quite sad atmosphere. I though long and hard about brightening up the pic, but decided against it simply because of where it was taken.

In that case you've seen it and I'll respect your artists integrity and delete the file, glad you didn't mind it can be a touchy subject with people.

There is a friend of my father's who shall remain nameless who takes really bad pictures using medium format cameras and posh film who bugs the hell out of me by making "helpful" suggestions that either involve him wanting to crop my pictures so they are as terrible as his ("the rule of thirds is outdated") or "you are using digital so you should take advantage of it by using split toning and HDR" I do what he asks of me when he's sat there, then delete them the second he's out the door.
Yes, I'm learning, yes I need help and much practice but HDRing the shit out of something because I screwed up the highlights is not the answer Uncle X.

I think the only thing that make's Malc seem darker than it should be is the lack of a solid anchor as it were on the gravestone. The eye slides of a little due to a lack of detail owing to the extreme weathering of the letters, and so you start thinking about the light more than anything else. Not a bad shot at all, I quite like it, but if there a way the remaining letters and a bit more of the texture could be brought out?

I'm not sure how much of a difference in perceived light there is between monitor types and ipads and what not. At work my photos seem a little too dark, at home I try to keep them slightly on the bright side as a result.

I like your dog Decca. Perfect lovely exposure on that shaggy white hair. Gives it a real bounce.

I love Derp the Deer.

Anyway, did somebody say ultimate horror...? Ultimate disquiet at least, hopefully...

Glissando

Waffly short-short mood piece follows, possibly pretentious, but am drinking whiskey:

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
The cold of the handle bit your hand as you slammed the car door shut. All was silence except the sound of gravel scrunching underfoot as you walked down the path into the park, your ears red from the chill. You hear a cackling of geese and the sharp snap of wings as they take flight from the lake edge beside you. A fierce cawing and next the trees empty, the birds taking to the sky and wheeling out and away, far away. Troubled, but unable to articulate why, you continue. The dirt turns to boards under your feet. The mist closes in and the path is barely lit by the metal and perspect lamps before you. The air is strange, tense, and the landscape seems bleached of colour.

Stranger still, the milky whiteness turns to a strange hue of amber. A growling noise behind you, you stumble and spin on the spot. The growl turns to whimpering, a dog on its chain lost somewhere behind.

And then the noise... a deep foghorn sound and glissando shriek, and you turn back to face the path and the trees and the gentle curved hills and your heart explodes in terror as there, vibrating like a tuning fork, radiating a lifeless malice, quakes an impossible obsidion structure - born into your reality in the time it takes to turn three hundred and sixty degrees...

Back to my den for some lightbox action now the weather has blown all the bugs away. More effort went into the build than the photo itself but thought I'd stick it here anyway.

Heh. I'm toying with the idea of getting (or knocking up) a lightbox for use during the winter. I'm sure you'll all be delighted to see every handheld gaming machine I own in anatomical detail. Or something like that.
Anyway, still some bugs here (it was 30 degrees on Sunday, but is supposed to drop towards single digits by Friday), so I was able to get these pics today. Possibly the last hurrah for the year.

Another extreme closeup.

Interesting stuff there, DavPaz. I like the group shot of buildings, looks like they've huddled together for the photo :) .

Got my first note added in Flickr to my robot pic and it also got favourited by a fellow builder. Finally accepted by the Lego Mecha nerds! :metul:

I like the sailor statue, DavPaz, shame about the wee blur of crane round the mouth. The group of buildings is very nice too. Zardoz - funky awesome robot dude with brush there, love the colours and soft light. Beautiful exposure!

Nice pics Mark. Really love that first one. Would consider cropping it to get rid of that weird bit of green flare though.

Like the second one a lot, Mark. I'd like to see it with the bottom quarter of the pic cropped out - not sure about all that darkness.

I do especially like how the ratio has worked with the bottom one there. Very nice. Love the texture and the smooth gleam.

Photoshops Voodoo Delete can provide the picture from the start of the story...
