The thing that brought this to mind for me was realizing they are remaking Thundercats and the pilot episode was shown today in the US

I watched this trailer and thought it looked ace... but...

Wait, I'm confused. I thought there was already a Lord of the Rings cartoon.

But seriously, I suppose they have to start somewhere, and this looks pretty pro, to be fair. I wouldn't be surprised if it's better than the original series, which like nearly all fondly remembered 80s/early 90s cartoons was actually quite shit.

The music is rubbish. It needs more ridiculous guitar solos. However; Cheetara = Still Would.

Thundercats looks pretty well done IMO, and I've got more tolerance for cartoon remakes than films. Are there any other shows being redone?

Which, as I thought whilst watching, is the most important aspect. I was going to post

I'm trying to think of any that weren't a bit shit. Half of them aren't even any good on drugs these days.

They remade My Little Pony too, which judging by all the Youtube Poops I've seen of it must mean its either good, popular on 4Chan or complete arse.

Oh dear by the looks of things.

I have watched the cartoon and it was pretty solid stuff, if incredibly cliched. Far superior to the old one and Cheetara really is absolutely gorgeous.

It's funny how so much american media promotes fairness, peace and tolerance and yet the country goes round bombing and shooting everywhere.

They only get the baddies though, right?

Thinking about it it's mainly the TV aimed at children the promotes the peace and tolerance thing. The adult stuff is much more childishly good guys and bad guys most often. Like say, 24 for example.

But yes. Anyway. Thundercats is at the very least well made.

Oh hell yeah, Ulysses 31 was awesome. I found the Turtles cartoon to be quite tiresome even back then (April O'Neil was really annoying, and sometimes I just wished Krang would actually win for a change).

I remember quite a few cartoons fondly from my childhood, but other than the brief nostalgia trip of occasionally enjoying the theme tunes on youtube I worry that if I tried to watch them properly that I'd realise that they weren't actually much good.

There were some fucking brill theme tunes and intros. Cities of Gold in particular.

I bought the DVD boxset of Mysterious Cities of Gold and it is utterly fantastic; definitely the best cartoon from my childhood which is still awesome now I'm an adult.

Also, this is DEFINITELY the best cartoon music of all time ever!

I also loved Ulysses 31. Really loved Battle of the Planets too when I was young.

I was always a fan of the Pole Position music. It used to get stuck in my head for an age after watching it.

It's a close call between Gummi Bears and Bucky O'Hare for me.

Not really a cartoon I know but

I was ready to have my childhood ruined but the only thing I can see that they have changed is that Cheetara is more sexy and less furry.

The name didn't ring any bells, so I looked up a clip on YT and was stunned to find that I remembered almost every note of the theme tune and had all sorts of vague memories of watching it. I must have been about 5 the last time I saw it. I love/hate it when that happens.

Mr Rossi had an awesome intro.

I saw a couple of books the other day which were based on the digital re-making of the Smurfs. I almost stood and cried in Tesco, observing the horror of what they'd done to one if the sweetest, nicest things ever to have been made.



The Gummi Bears theme tune was ace, BUT I think TBE theme tune to Slim Pig Beats them all. I can't get on YouTube at the mo, but if someone can find the theme tune to Slim Pig on there and embed it, they will have a friend for life in me.

Pole Position is something I have on an official video release. It's on DVD now. Anyway who cares about cartoons, puppets is where its at for 80s goodness.

I remember the characters from BOTP/SNG but I guess I was too young really to appreciate anything other than just the general form of things. I can't for the life of me remember a single story.

Pole Position was amazing.

I bought the season one, volume one of the Thundercats DVD release a few years ago. Really glad I didn't pay out for the complete set as it's really quite shit now.

Mysterious Cities of Gold is still fucking awesome, though.

It was quite shit, then, too. This is the thing about 80s cartoon nostalgia - people now going apeshit about how brilliant Thundercats and Transformers were and I'm there going "er... no, they were crap, 25 minute adverts and actually, no-one cared about the cartoons, either". The original Transformers animated movie is very good but ultimately they existed to sell toys and it is the toys people remember, not the TV shows.



Now, I agree with. Although after 20-odd weeks I just wanted it to be over with especially as that flying gold bird was in the title sequence every week and it took what seemed like forever to get to it. Dogtanian, Willy Fogg, proper cartoons with stories, characters and plot.

A little bit of wee came out when I watched that.

No Panthro, but maybe they'll introduce him as someone banished or something that they have to get back to emphasise his Mr T Awesomeness.

I'm not that harsh on the original series. My kids love it, and it certainly stands up better than stuff like Transformers. You just have to watch with the assumption that Lion-O is a fucking idiot.

Transformers the Movie is fucking excellent, but the programmes are shit as fuck. Nostalgia only gets you so far.

Ulysses 31 is tripe, sadly. My advice: never go back. Keep the memory intact.

Star Fleet was this: Fucking Awesome. My favourite character was the black dude with the most excellent afro.

Bar the initial few shows, Transformers has aged extremely badly, but that movie still holds up, largely because it does away with the usual "they all live to fight another day" bullshit and massacres half the cast. It was pretty shocking as a kid watching that, seeing Megatron break into an Autobot spaceship and gun down four long-serving characters (one, rather brutally, in cold blood). Of course, this was also to sell toys—the characters killed off were also cancelled in the toy line—but that made no odds to my young brain and helps the film still work pretty well today.

Barry Hercules. Did I mention my cat was named after the female character? Lamia. At least we thought so. It turns out it was probably more likely that she had more in common with the mythical beast.
