Colour me not even slightly surprised by that. :p

How's the prospect of The North going, Mali? When do you make the big move? It's all very exciting!

Forms were sent off yesterday, with some monies. Potential move in date of 10th September.

Bigger? The design is already as big as my server case. And it will have windows and minifigs. Space permitting, a table also.

Just got a shitload of cakes and pies from the lovely folk at work. Now we're scoffing them! (It's my penultimate day, but various people are off tomorrow.) Woo!

Sky are happy to migrate the whole package over into the new place, which is nice, and a relief. A van for 24 hours costs between £70-100 depending on size, but I figure a SWB Transit should do it. I think two sofas, a pine dresser and some other stuff would fit quite nicely into it, but i'm erring on the LWB version. Probably best to be safe with the volume, I guess. When I first moved in here, all my belongings fitted into a Meriva....

I'd just get the price for a box transit or similar, it's usually only a few quid more and it'll make like easier, usually have leccy tailgates too.

Like a luton van? That was £100 or so. That's going to be best, isn't it?

So, drive van up, unload van, drive van down, drive car up. I'll have to leave here at 5am to get those trips done in time to go and watch the rugby match that begins at 3pm.

Luton van's are so much better. The tail-lift is an absolute godsend.

Today I have:
Had a tour or Bletchley Park
Spent the day talking to various people about how to better educate programmers in schools and universities.
Randomly met a bunch of ex-colleagues I wasn't expecting to meet.
Even more randomly, spent the day with a UGVM'er.
Seen the Raspberry Pi £15 microcomputer in action.

I am now planning to gorge on pizza and play WoW all evening...

Unless you're considerably older than you look, Mali, you can only drive vans up to a certain size.

Not-a-cat and a new neighbourhood cat who's been encroaching on her turf a lot lately are having a prolonged, very psychological stand-off in the garden. Not-a-cat is standing her ground against the slightly bigger and obviously younger (and not half-blind) opponent, who is apparently either really stupid or pretty double-hard, because it's only slightly more wary of me.

Naturally, my sister, being a soft-headed numpty, can't just sit back and let them get on with it. Oh no, not-a-cat is her 'princess', see, not a demi-wild and very territorial, social animal with a complex behavioural code or anything. So she goes out there and picks not-a-cat up and drops her several feet away, so that they "can be friends". Then, after Not-a-cat spends a few minutes desperately trying to live this down, she takes a bowl of food out for each of them (both of which not-a-cat has eaten from).

Seconds later, Not-a-cat capitulates, and slinks off in disgrace while the newcomer helps itself to her food.

For fuck's sake. They're cats. Let them get on with it. Watch, by all means, but don't interfere. It's a cat thing - they don't want some stupid apes lumbering around interfering in their business. Some people have no respect for animals.

This is almost as bad as the time we looked after a friend's dog for a fortnight, and my sister completely abandoned not-a-cat, who spent the whole time living on top of a neighbour's shed at the end of the garden and would probably have disappeared for good if I hadn't brought food out to her.

I suspect that a Luton van is heavier than that.

I drove a Luton van for deliveries when I worked at B&Q on a weekend. I was 21/22. It was totally legit, of course. I was fully insured and everything. The only "training" I did was reversing it into a coned space in the yard. Then I was set. And even that was just to satisfy the weekday driver that I wasn't going to crash his van!

edit: Also, they're specifically designed to be just about under 3,500 KG, else they probably wouldn't sell any! They're generally considered the largest vehicle you can drive on a normal licence.

Yeah, I drove a Luton on my licence. And very nice it was too - jaunt to Manchester, pick up boxes of books, down to Kent, drop them off at a school, quick look at the ashes replica and on my way.

No, under 2 ton for a standard Transit, 2.5 or so for a box van. That means you're allowed about a ton of stuff in it. Summary: you don't care, just hire one.

Is that on the pre-'97 licences when they tightened the restrictions? MaliA, when did you pass your driving test?

I don't think the change in 1997 was anything to do with the size of van you can drive, it's all about the trailer - as you can see Mali is only allowed to drive a diddy 750KG trailer.

My license includes D1+E = The total weight of the vehicle and the trailer together can’t weigh more than 12,000kg. LULZ!

That's my understanding. I can drive up to 3,500kg laden, but can't really stick a trailor on the back.
