I was just thinking whilst watching Zack and Miri make a Porno how often schoo reunions seem to feature in American films and thus wondered if it was largely an American phenomenon.

I've never been invited to one and know of no one who has ever been to one. I certainly wouldn't either. But then of the Americans I know none of those have either. But they certainly feature less in non American entertainment.

Have any of you ever gone to a school reunion and are not American?

I was invited to one in 2009 - I politely declined.

I didn't go, but my old upper school had a reunion a few years back. It wasn't an official school sanctioned thing though, with bunting and punch....

I went every year until about 2007, when it rather tailed off.

My secondary school has an Old Boys Club of which I am a lifetime member. There is a christmas dinner and a quiz every year, which I am yet to attend.

Oxford colleges tend to have regular reunions, called 'gaudies', usually held at ten yearly intervals. The purpose seems to be to get the old members drunk, then pass round the fundraising hat.

I've never heard of my secondary school or sixth-form organising one, but then I doubt I would attend: with one or two exceptions I'm in touch with the people from those years I want to be in touch with, and even then we've more or less moved on so far it's not a close relationship.

I don't understand why I would want a reunion with the bunch of hateful cunts which were the denizens of my school that made my life a complete misery. I still know everyone I need to know from school thank you very much.

I have been invited to many of these reunions, and have attended precisely zero of them. Some of my best friends that I see the most often are from my school, but the ones I wanted to stay in touch with, I stayed in touch with. I couldn't give two shits what the others are up to.

Terrible idea, school reunions. Gave us Grosse Point Blank though, so who am I to complain?

Oh yes. People whom you knew 20 years ago and hated somehow think you'll want to be friends with them now online. They're just collecting 'friends' to increase their high score.

School reunions can make interesting films though. GPB in particular.

But Americans seem to make such a big deal out of it. Is it just purely a film related thing? A handy topic cinematically. Need to ask more Americans.

Joining in with the hate, motherfuckers bullied the living shit out of me at school and now have the nerve to add me on facebook. There was a core group of about 6 of us :nerd: who used to hide out in the art room at lunch because the very scary art teacher felt pity for us - aside from that one time when it was snowing and he thought it would be hilarious to kick us out via the door leading on to the school field and stood there watching as 100 people all pelted us with snowballs.

I take comfort in the fact that a lot of the "cool" crowd are still living at home with parents, the other five are doing crazy amazing things with their lives and I have awesome children.

So no, not going to any reunion, mainly because I would spend the whole time trying not to punch people in the face. Perhaps if I had got any form of apology when any of them added me I would be less annoyed but the only messages I've had have been "hi! long time no see how are you :) " so fuck them, fuck them hard with a big pointy stick.

edit: there is a special place in my heart for that kid who punched my brother in the face because I was a "beaver loving dyke" and is now openly gay.

There does seem to be a thing about reunions, certainyl from American TV shows, of having to go to them so you can show the annoying school bullies that you've done better than they have. Not sure if that happens a lot of if it's just a sit-com thing.

I still couldn't give a shit.

I selectively cull everytime my number of 'Friends' reaches 100. There is no way on earth that I have 100 people that I consider friends. Facebook needs circles.

My school has them every year - different groups each time, I think. I've never been. But I did discover - when working nearby, with a bloke who didn't go to the same place but knew a lot of people who did - that lots of the people I knew had a tradition of having Christmas Eve in a particular pub. And very nice that was too, all had become quite nicely rounded people. The tradition seems to have stopped, presumably due to families and the like, such that a couple of years ago I and one other (and he lives in Germany so we'd arranged it anyway) were the only ones there. It felt a bit like all the others had decided to go elsewhere and we hadn't got the memo but hey, what the hoo.

Official ones, no, no reason to go, though I have gone and run a 10k at my old school for the last couple of years as an excuse to have a mooch round the place. Out of term so it's quiet - perfect time, really.

My leaving secondary school's 20th anniversary is coming up soon (less than 2 years away), I wouldn't mind going to that (if there is one) if lots of the others were there (most of the idiots didn't go on to do A-levels so they would have had their 20th anniversary this year).

I can't imagine anyone from my school being able to contact me, nor would I particularly want them to. Anybody worth having as friends remains a friend to this day, and that list is very small. I wasn't bullied, nor did I particularly hate anybody there, but I had little interest in most people in my school then, and absolutely none now.

My old school has reunion dinners every year as the old boys club is a separate entity from the school they expect you to pay to attend. These started off at £100 but the most recent was a jaw dropping £275 with a guest speaker. I would rather dig my liver out with a rusty spoon.

I'd quite like a reunion.

I bump in to people I used to go to school with from time to time. Most of them were ok really, I couldn't be arsed with a reunion, though.

Still notice former secondary school people about town. They look very aged. Good thing I am a strict non-drinker, that has helped me stay relatively well preserved.

College people, well, haven't seen any since I finished my A-levels. That's how it goes, they just scatter geographically when they attend university. I assume.

Other than bumping into people in supermarkets, haven't spoken to anyone from school in five years. Stayed in touch and socialised with a specific group for years after school ended, but they are all white van man crypto-racists these days so I can't be bothered. Thinking back, it would be better for me to remember the nice kids they were, not the bitter Sun readers they devolved into. Too late, I guess.

Mine too. You got free membership for 10 years then had to stump up a big lump of money, so I was a member for, um, about... 10 years? It never really occurred to me to go to any of the dinners since my school pretty much treated any non-Oxbridge student as an outcast, and besides, who really wants to ever see their old school again once you've left? 7 years of going about 200 days a year was plenty thank you. I suppose the only valid reason for going would be to see which girls turned out to be surprisingly fit, but I went to an all boys school :'(

One of my chums at school was Henry Luxemburg, who turned into Hollyoaks serial killer Toby Mills.
He's not done much since (although he was in a Mastercard Advert).

I am in touch with this many people from my school days: 0.

And long may that continue. It must be said, I do get a fair bit of schadenfreude when hearing about a couple of the twats I really despised. The one persuaded the PE teacher to get me dropped from the football team in favour of his mate lost his leg in a bike accident, one had loads of money because his dad had a large business which he then took over and rode into the ground.

It is might be bitter and small and petty, but *shrugs*. Every so often I go back to the town to visit my parents, and to remind myself why I worked so hard to get out of there. Greatest form of motivation in the world.

Purposes of a school reunion:

1) Organiser is having mid life crisis and seeks to regress.

2) Lording your real or invented success over some twatwicks.

3) Having sex with That Girl.

I've not heard of my school having one, but then I only know one person from there and we both purged every trace of the place from our lives when we left. There're only two people I'd be interested to see, and I doubt they'd go anyway.

As for sixth form, I was invited to one a few years back. I don't think anyone went. I'm still in touch with all but one person I cared about from there, and that one person disappeared off the face of the planet years ago anyway. I suspect she's in Egypt, and we'll eventually meet at a dramatic moment for a swordfight atop some sort of burning edifice.

I reckon the prevalence of reunions in american films is down to their fetish for school life and youth in general. I doubt half the cliched stuff that goes in in schools in their films is at all true in reality. I mean, Screech never even came in one day with a Kalashnikov and shot Slater and that two-bit skank Kelly in their stupid fat heads.

I vaguely remember there being a couple of crack whores in it. Just went to check what the saved by the bell class were now up to and discovered that one of his most recent rolls was in fact a star part in:

I hated school. Being bullied one way or another, constantly, every day for five years (happened in primary school too, I guess) isn't much fun at all. They were cunts then, they are probably cunts now and because of that, I really do not associate with anyone from school that I didn't get on with back then (and I can count those on one hand).

So I'll be staying well away from any reunions that are organised. I can see myself walking in, offending everyone within a matter of minutes and getting thrown out (and probably getting another kicking in the process).

Actually, that could be fun.

*ponders*
