Boring gear purchase alert!

Bought an extra battery for £20 and an extra San Disk 8gb 'Extreme' memory card for £20 (half price memory card in the usually farcically overpriced Jacobs!). That should do me for the festival.

All this time without an extra battery?!

I've never even come close to feeling the need for an extra battery yet. In fact if anything it lasts longer now than it did when I first got my camera due to not taking 100 exposures per thing.

Ran out in Dubai and Spain so having an extra one was a life saver for me. Beats carrying a charger anyway.

I used to have a grip, but it makes the camera too bulky for my liking. I just carry a spare battery, it's not like they're challenging to swap over.

Would you feel confident to go on holiday with just two batteries and no charger? Perhaps that's what I should have done.

I'm going to fill my 8 GB card while I'm away. I'm copying images to the iPad, so in theory I can just delete them off the card, but it feels... Dunno, risky, somehow. I might buy a third [1] card if I see one for a non-scandalous price.

I'm also talking myself into the 55-200 Nikkor kit lens.

[1] I'm carrying two cameras, the D5000 (with 18-55mm) and the GF1 (with 40mm equiv). They have an 8 GB card and a 4 GB one, respectively.

Unless it was a 2 week + holiday. I got through both batteries when I went to Dubai but I was taking pics all day for 5 days time. When I've been on week long holidays one battery has done me fine but it was nice knowing I had a spare.

Careful you don't get stuck.

My grip is non-nikon and slightly different, there are two trays, one which fits the battery and another into which you slot AA batteries so if you run out of juice it's just a case of finding the nearest corner shop.

I took my chargers to Canada (and got my bag searched for it, because my carry-on was basically a bag full of wires), but didn't use them. It's not like they take up much space.

No, but more than a battery on its own and then there's the charge time.

I bought myself a superclamp mount with a flexible arm for the car, earlier. Hoping it arrives tomorrow, as I want to use it for a track day on Saturday (grumbles something about organisers not allowing suction cup mounts any more.)

We did a boat tour on holiday and some bloke on it had a Canon something-or-other armed with a 70-300. I had a quick go. Golly, that's a lot of making-stuff-bigger-ability.

Yea, I've got a Tamron 70-300 for my Nikon. It was bloody excellent when I visited West Midlands Safari Park.

The 55-250 is good at making stuff bigger too. Haven't processed my Blackpool pictures yet, but here's a few from my Liverpool tour to show off the zoominess.

That's the long lens I have. It's a good lens, but picture quality and focus near the far end are weak.

I have the sigma version and it's a stonking lens really crisp and clear with no chromic aberrations or warping, the lack of IS makes it painful to hand hold though and unfortunately the next noticeable upgrade for it with great IS is the Nikon costing many hundreds of pounds and I don't use it nearly enough for that. Not sure when next purchase will happen, it's going to be the tamron 17-50 2.8 - I may ask for amazon vouchers for my birthday and Christmas to get it.

Forgot to mention: the Fn button on my D5000 broke the day we left for the honeymoon. Of all the buttons to do without, that's probably the best, but it was still annoying. Back to the camera shop tomorrow. As I allegedly bought the last recon D5000 (and their website claims there are no more in stock), I wonder what's going to happen next. Send off for repair, I imagine, which will be a pain.

Get a Canon.

I just ordered an Express 34 card reader for my MacbookPro. Been meaning to do it for ages rather than use a ghastly external card reader.

D5000 has gone back to Nikon for repair. "2-3 weeks", apparently. Boo.

It was just over £15 from a Play.com affiliate shop. I went for a Belkin one as I heard some cheaper ones can stop your Mac going to sleep.

OK chaps, I'm selling some kit, I'll keep this open till tuesday then they are going on the bay.

Nikon AF-S DX 3,5-4,5/18-70 G ED £110 Mint, has caps, hood and bag. Better than the 18-50 kit and has a metal mount. A lens so good I bought it twice.

Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 DG Macro
£120 Mint has caps and hood, it's the lens I took the zoo photos with. This lens is AF, I repeat AF, it will not work on the DXXX models.

I'll cover postage (next day and insured) and am open to offers.

reason for sale, just bought a Tamron 18-250 at mates rates.

Glad I got it now. Works flawlessly, just plugged in with no fuss (and no drivers). The supplier was very quick at getting it to me too.

Much neater and faster than the transfers from my old USB card reader.

So. I have a Canon 300D, which is good enough for me to muck around with. I have an iMac, I have Aperture 3.

All good right? Except only 1 in 10 of my pictures import into Aperture ok! the rest all come back with an "unsupported image format" message. I can see the pictures fine in the import preview.
I'm connected up via USB direct from the camera.

Looking around on google, people suggest rebooting Aperture, which doesn't work. Or connecting via a CF reader rather than direct to the camera, which I have ordered one, but don't have one to hand.
Any other ideas? If the reader doesn't work i'm going to format the CF card and try again, if that doesn't work then it is new CF card time, if that doesn't work i'm clueless!

Yeah that seems a bit odd. As you say hopefully the card reader will sort it. If not then just buy a PC.

Long shot as I'm not a Mac guy, but does aperture need an update for RAW codecs?

The problem is probably with the Canon, not the Mac.

This is my thinking, either Canon or the CF card. Why 10% of them work is the confusing thing, but looking at them they are slightly smaller file sizes. No RAW images work, some Large Fine images do, but most of them don't.
I'm guessing there is some sort of issue with trying to send a lot of data directly over the camera connection.

Can I get new firmware for the 300D? Might be worth a go if I can.

I do have a PC to hand to try it out on, i'll give that a go today.

Is there another computer handy that you could try and view the files on? At least that would shed light on the problem.

First step, try different computer.

Second, get CF card reader.

Third, chipped XBOX1

Shouldn't do, and I can't see any plugins that would have anything to do with it. It's a mac, it "just works"

Fourth step, use a different camera to take photos of my junk...
