I can't listen to that as I'm at work, but I hope he's advocating sending wrestlers in to sort the looters out.

There hasn't been any reports of violence in Scotland, has there?
I suppose if it breaks out in Edinburgh it would only be praised for being 'edgy'.

No, but there was an excellent "good to be constantly reminded on twitter that our brave comedians are safe in Edinburgh" tweet went around this morning.

All's quiet here. Mind you, the streets are a riot of American tourists at the minute anyway. There's literally no room for anyone to start some shit.

They should release all the carnivores from London Zoo. An enraged and suitably hungry lion would disperse a crowd pretty quickly.

EDIT I meant in London, but hell, works fine for tourists in Edinburgh too.

The only thing Edinburgh Zoo has is penguins. Pretty natty penguins mind you, they can break a man's arm.

There's rumours that it's going to tee off in Cardiff tonight.

Specifically Grangetown.

I live in Grangetown.

Almost certainly idle-gossip-bollocks, but I'll keep you posted. I'll be at Lord Rixondale's tonight for the traditional Tueday Meal & Movie, though he has informed me that I can crash at his if we get scary reports. You might get a new brand of Pete photography in the morning!

P.S: Look at my self-portrait in the Pics thread, you bastards.

Why yes, yes he did. Brother. Oddly enough body-building forums have been organising today as well, look out for Muscleworks on Hague street as it seems to be where they are going to be making their big stand. I for one cannot wait for the youtube footage of the first 14 year old chav who tries it on.

You know the more I hear from MPs on this the more sympathy I have for the looters, none of them are acknowledging the root cause of the problems and this is from a Tory. Yes your city is a great place to live, but then your city is Notting hill.

I did wonder when this all started kicking off whether we'd see some hard nuts go out there to face up to the looters and whether the police might not overly rush to break it up.

I had the joy of a coworker telling me that he assumed that the most of the trouble was carried out by black people, including the initial protest, as the bulk of crime is carried out by 'the blacks'.

My friend from Chapeltown commented, just below a picture of a car with a smashed rear screen on his street:

Quote:
Yeah... we got away with one shooting and a burned out car here last night... hopefully if there is more unrest it stays relatively low level.

Which is somewhat more calm that I think I would be.

Confirmation of what the police have been saying all along. Duggan had a blank firing gun that had been converted to live firing, he brandished it to armed police, he got shot.
It was the media who talked about a fire fight IIRC.

It's not going to help, but I don't see a problem with a drug dealer brandishing a weapon being shot, to be honest. I'm guessing the "mob" won't see it that way...

No, it isn't. There were plenty of rumours of it being a 'police-issue bullet', but that was based on it being a dum-dum round, which anyone can make with a hacksaw. This is the first official report stating that Duggan never fired the gun.

I'm too tired to type out a load of thoughts at the moment but Mary Riddell has pretty accurately captured a good chunk of feelings about all of this, it might at least provide a bit of an antidote to some of the surprising crashing of IQs around here today :S

Good article, I suggest you take 5 minutes out of your day to read it.

The implication is clear, this'll get a lot worse if the Tories continue with their slash and burn approach to public services and facilities in the poorest areas of the country, as the bankers continue to cream off tens of billions of pounds in bonuses for fucking up the world.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/ ... s-out.html

Quote:
The view is gaining ground that social democracy, with its safety nets, its costly education and health care for all, is unsustainable in the bleak times ahead. The reality is that it is the only solution. After the Great Crash, Britain recalibrated, for a time. Income differentials fell, the welfare state was born and skills and growth increased.

That exact model is not replicable, but nor, as Adam Smith recognised, can a well-ordered society ever develop when a sizeable number of its members are miserable and, as a consequence, dangerous. This is not a gospel of determinism, for poverty does not ordain lawlessness. Nor, however, is it sufficient to heap contempt on the rioters as if they are a pariah caste.

The IPCC were confirming that the police had never claimed he opened fire yesterday.

In any case, this hasn't been about the Duggan shooting for at least 24 hours.

Or equally, this is down the last decade of labour breeding a sense of entitlement in an underclass that expects and gets given welfare without any expectation of having to contribute to society...

See, it's easy to politicise anything and accuse either side of failure, when in fact they are both equally to blame.
