I'm moving to York. My college is quite far from our house and my girlfriend will be using the car, so I need a bike. I don't want to break the bank - budget of £200 (ideally less, but I realise bikes are not cheap) - more than happy to buy second hand from eBay or wherever. I quite like the look of the Specialized Sirrus Sport. They seem to go for a good price on eBay. They any good? Any other suggestions? Will £200 get me a quality second hand bike? I'm totally and utterly lost when it comes to bikes.

It'll be used pretty much exclusively on roads/cycle tracks.

Cheers!

:hat:

BTW, this is what made me want a Sirrus Sport:

Anyone have any idea which year this one is from? The current 2011 model has a much curvier frame.

As everyone is rushing to give you advice, i'll jump on this too! :D

I might want a bike also, my place does a "Ride2Work" scheme, which gets me 42% off any bike from here http://www.evanscycles.com/
I just want a bike to potter about on the redways in Milton Keynes, so i'm guessing I want a hybrid? The bike (plus accessories) can be between £250-£1000 (so cost to me will be £150-£600) in value to fit in the scheme.
What should I be looking at? Happy to pay the higher cost if it gets me something much better.

I don't get involved in these kinds of threads as everyone will advise you differently (same with cars). Just go down to your local bike shop and try some. Nothing beats sitting on a bike and taking it for a test ride for knowing what you want.

I asked a roughly similar question a couple of weeks back. I was recommended Spokey Dokies.

:this:

There's no good way of recommending a bike to someone by just pointing to things on the Internet. Just go to a shop and try some out.

Yeah, but... I can't afford a new bike! I suppose I'll go and do a bit of tyre kicking. I was hoping someone would have a bit of knowledge on the Specialized one I posted. Nobody ever heard of it? Don't you read lame-ass bike magazines and stuff?

Nice tactics. You could try Cash Convertors on Linthorpe Road. They'll have a range of freshly stolen bikes you can peruse at your leisure.

Actually, I get the impression that most of the bikes on eBay are the same deal. There are an awful lot of good deals in the Liverpool area.

I hope you took heed of that recommendation?

You used to get them free in boxes of special cereal didn't you? The ones we never bought. We were only allowed Cornflakes and Rice Crispies....Spokey Dokies were in Sugar Puffs or Coco Pops and those kind of cereals.

I think my sister and I somehow ended up with 5 each. Probably given to us because the spoilt kids down the road who lived on awesome cereal had so many, every single spoke was covered. Bastards.

The correct response is, of course, "Have you considered a late-model 19th Century horse-drawn buggy?"

I've said it before, but if you just want to commute, scour the free ads or the college noticeboard and buy the cheapest roadworthy bike you can. When it gets stolen, you won't be as pissed off as you would be had you spent £200.

Hell yeah! I don't even have the bike yet, but I've got the Spokie Dokies already!

The "buy a cheap hunk of junk" probably isn't a bad start, then if it gets nicked / you hate riding / you get hit by a tram you haven't wasted a load of cash. Upgrade in a years time when you know more about bikes.

Or, alternatively, get a land rover bike.

Yeah, a bikes a bike innit? When you're starting out, I think you probably won't get much more out of something that cost £3000 as opposed to something that cost £200.

But then again, I could be wrong. Remember when you were a kid, as long as it had wheels, a seat and a chain, it was good to go! Gears were optional but the requirement for them was a fashion thing. As if you get a mountain bike with 21 gears when your mates have got a BMX. zomg what a loser.

If you're not looking to spend upwards of £500 on a bike I'd probably just go for any cheap pile of rubbish.

Alternatively, have you thought about getting a car?

I bought one from halfords for 200 quid when I was working at a hostel in the middle of nowhere. Did the job, now its stuck in England. I got given a knackered old mountain bike here, its a death trap, but gets me from a to b. That's all you need really, just buy a cheap one for 50quid or so

You fucking useless set of cunts.

I expect BeeX to supply in depth answers to any purchasing decision I intend to make and you've all just let me down terribly. I feel like crying.

So yeah I want a bike for about £500. Hard tail, lockable suspension with disc brakes and a pea holder.

Just fucking find me one already so I don't have to click on any other internet sites.

LOVE YOU ALL.

If you're 'only' going to be spending £100-150 on a bike then they are all pretty much of a muchness, it has to be said.
