...for libel

Quote:
An author has won £65,000 in libel damages over a "spiteful" book review that was written by a journalist for a broadsheet newspaper.

Sarah Thornton took legal action over Lynn Barber's 2008 review of her book Seven Days in the Art World.

Ruling in London's High Court, Mr Justice Tugendhat said the Daily Telegraph review was "spiteful" and contained serious factual errors.

The newspaper said it would appeal "at the earliest opportunity".

I've not read the review, and it seems that the libel was that the author was quoted in the review even though there was no actual interview done.

Seems an odd one to me

Er, if I'm reading the article correctly it was the reviewer who alleged she had been quoted in the book without any interview taking place between the author and her. This was apparently proved false.
Don't see much wrong with it myself. Reviewer lies in review, is proven a liar, loses court case.

No, other way around. The book quoted the reviewer, and in the review the reviewer claimed that the author had never interviewed her. The reviewer also seems to be claiming that she agreed that she would have the right to copy approval after being quoted in the book. A little bit weird given that the two claims are kind of mutually exclusive.
