I heard about this on the news this morning. Why is it a bad thing?

I would have thought that it would make things easier... for instance http://www.coca.cola

Sounds simple doesn't it? Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

As we favour analogies here. Imagine if the government suddenly said, fuck postcodes, put any string you like on the end of your letter and the post office will make sure they match that string to you.

Post Office dudes : 8)

Oh lord. Not going to be simple when places like France and Germany get hold if it.

At least at £114k per suffix, there won't be people registering them for the hell of it. I'd hope not anyway.

That's an entirely separate argument, whether unicode characters should be allowed in domain names.

Personally, I'm against it.

And this.

So yes, in summary, ICANN are twats.

So you're essentially suggest they change their name to ICANN'T instead?

Ah right... I'm thinking from a consumer point of view. Does it make it easier for the consumer? I think it does.

No, not really.

The consumer will still go to Google.com and search for the thing they are looking for (or, indeed, search for the URL they want) and then click the first link.

For a fun demonstration of this being the case, take a look at #comment-110567608" class="postlink">the comments on this site which, for a short while, became the first Google result for "facebook login" (choose 'sort by oldest first' to see the comments in the correct order. I hate Disqus).

So us getting a BEEX suffix is right out then?

I imagine big companies out there will be thrilled by the prospect of buying up .areshit, .arecunts, .arewankers etc for their domains.

ICANN, in theory, aren't going to let people have a TLD unless they have a legitimate reason (although, of course, you could argue that 'areshit' is a legitimate reason).

Much like they were going to do with domain names, which they did for about ten seconds.

You could go for grim.dotdot. I'm sure that wouldn't be confusing at all.

Not sure this is that big a deal. The colossal prices are going to stop a lot of .areshit nonsense, and it's not like the current .com/.org/.net distinctions are in any way meaningfully applied -- or, indeed, .com/.co.uk. And it might stop $FILM-movie.com or $NAME-app.com cluttering up the top levels too.

Similarly, I don't see what's so bad about Unicode DNS. Why shouldn't people speaking a non-Roman alphabet language be able to write domain names in their native tongue?

If we're talking about historic changes to DNS, I'd argue that sun.com going offline (one of the first ever domain names) is more significant. Thanks for that, Oracle.

While they exist. I'm willing to bet they won't exist at anywhere near the launch levels within two years.

Also, I reckon irate consumers are an ideal market. I bet you could make your money back on .areshit in a couple of months, max.

The reason I'm not too keen on it is that if we get domains with Unicode characters in that can't be easily reproduced on standard keymaps, typing in some domain names would become ridiculously laborious.

That and the problem that Grim... has highlighted ;)

Chinese urls serve chinese people. If you can't get there, boohoo ;)

ps: Ages ago I tried an alternate DNS thing where they had all sorts of odd TLDs. It was a bit shit really.
