Recently I met with an accountant who is doing some business tax returns for me. He annoyingly indicated that in order for him to satisfactorily audit the accounts for correctness I would need to reconcile my transactional records with both my bank account and paypal account to make sure everything matches up, forwards and backwards.

This has been an annoying but useful task, as I've found a few instances where I've paid money out/in that hadn't been accounted for. Then I started to reconcile paypal withdrawals with my bank statements....

I'm looking at incredible discrepancies where money I requested to withdraw from paypal just NEVER made it to my bank account. Each payment into my bank is tagged with a transaction reference, but this doesn't bear any resemblance to the transactionID's I can view within Paypal, meaning I'm not sure which Paypal withdrawls relate to which bank credit. The only way to do it is to know it takes about 4-5 days (sometimes 10!) for the money to hit the account after the request, so that's how I've been matching it up.

So far, I've calcualted paypal owe me at least £200 for requests to withdraw money that don't have a corresponding bank credit. In one month I requested a withdrawl of £50 four times, and received only two credits.

How this is possible I do not know, but I keep finding more and I'm not halfway done reconciling yet. The only thing that excites the prospect of being owed some money is the knowledge that I'm going to have to contact, beat, and berrate my way several layers into Paypal to have a hope of getting any of it.

TL;DR: ARRRAGH.

There are reasons I don't use paypal.

One is that I trust them less than a very untrustworthy thong

No real help to offer, I'm afraid, but I hope it all works out OK. That's a lot of cash to go missing.

No help to you now, but I keep a record of my accounts in Gnucash, that way I always know what I've got available and where the wonga's gone.

I just have my own spreadsheet which I update daily, and have done for the past 4 years now. None of the proper applications did what I wanted in the way I wanted...
