Opera for me. Although I sometimes use all of them, especially changing when on Linux.

Firefox 3 but occasionally IE 7 (or 8 beta at work which I've got running in IE7 emulation mode anyway as too many sites don't look right in .

We had an email from the boss the other week telling us we needed to make sure the new CMS is fully functional in IE3.

Luckily, it was a typo and he meant 6, but christ.

And even more luckily, I'm not involved in that project anyway.

I use Firefox on the PC and Linux, Safari (So Goody!) on the Mac and Opera on my phone.

Fizzlefozzle, but tempted to try this 'Opera'.

I originally used Firefox when I got my Mac, before realizing it was SHIT - it crashed constantly, ran really slowly and SUCKED BALLS.

I used Shiira for two years, until they FUCKED IT - the old version doesn't work with flash and therefore is unusable for me, and the new version isn't finished into a usable state.

Which leaves Safari, which is great anyway.

I'm another Opera user.

Having grown up with its many incarnations, each adding new features, I am not baffled on first opening of it.

I no longer recommend it to new people though, because you can do too much with it out of the box, which is confusing.

I use Firefox 3 at home; Firefox 3/IE 6 at work; and Safari on my iPhone.

Looking at that screenshot of IE 3 reminds me that I never used it - Netscape Navigator 3 was a much superior web browser. Version 4, though. Version four. *cries a little*

I was a Netscape Communicator man at the time of early IE.

Then I switched to Mozilla, then Phoenix, Firebird, Firefox, then Opera.

I also use Konqeueueueueueuror, Epiphany, OffByOne, and KMeleon.

I'm a slut.

I use lots of browsers, too.

Sheepeh has used more obscure browsers than me, and I regularly use Links in anger.

I went through a period of having them all installed and just using a random one every day, after Communicator went to crap. After I learnt to use Opera, that's all I've used since. It's just so *nice*.

I do still have the others installed though, especially in Linux.

Firefox (with Firebug, natch) is really the only choice if you do web design.

Also, you've got to have all the other popular ones, too.

I mostly agree, but those new dev tools in Safari are lovely.

It is a good book, jonarob. I have used it myself (well actually I bought a copy for Shewolf from Craig and borrowed it for something).

(And seeing as this book is currently being torrented to fuck, it'll be the last one I write unless sales pick up or I get really desperate!)

Opera at home, IE7 at work as Opera doesn't like authenticating on ISA. I keep trying Firefox every so often but it just doesn't click for me.

Just one? Can't we do a best of three or something.

I use FF3 and Safari on my mac and Safari on my iPhone.

I don't think any of them are flawless, tbh. I keep Safari open almost exclusively for looking and browsing on here and I use FF3 for all other browsing but I have been thinking of changing recently as I'm tired of FF3 and it's gradual slip into dysfunction that seems to still happen - it runs fine for most of a day then slowly certain aspects stop working, like images won't load, then flash and movie files stop working and then eventually it becomes non responsive. Does this most days. It's something to do with tabs I think.

Having said all that, Safari hates google reader and frequently locks up completely. Actually, now I think about it, it's always Google reader in tab 1 that causes the problems in FF3...

I've had no problems with FF3 on Vista. In fact, I have more problems with it at work on XP.

Firefox 3, for me, starts up okay. Then, after a few minutes, pages start to not bother loading and eventually time out. I have to sit there and click a link once every second, up to a hundred or so times, until it decides to load; if it doesn't load instantly after clicking, it doesn't load at all.

Oh, and when I have Firefox open, the problem crosses over into every other browser. I've looked for fixes, but can't find anything that works. Disabling all addons, fresh installs etc. — nothing. Happens mainly on XP, but slowly degrades on Vista at home, too.

So now I'm back in Opera until they fix it, or someone tells me how to do it myself. Or I could switch back to Firefox 2.

Try that. Obviously change the file extension to .exe, though.

Is that anything special, or just a Firefox 2 installer? I already have Firefox 2 backed up, so the switch is simple and quick

I'm quite a fan of sIFR, though using it for body text would be monstrously daft. It does allow you to use any font for headings though, is non-intrusive and has great fallbacks in case the user has scripts/flash disabled. That said, I'm still yet to really use it.

Excellent! WDR ended up used similarly in various institutions, and also in a few universities. Obviously, my suggestion that the publisher then target educational institutions with the new (entirely modular) book was duly ignored. Gnh.


Mm. That's starting to happen here (on OS X). FF3 only ever loads about half the images from Flickr. I've no idea why, and it's really annoying because in terms of basic functionality, FF is now way ahead of the competition. (The auto-complete is utterly fantastic, and the tagging feature works nicely. Why the hell Safari doesn't have smart bookmarks yet is beyond me.)


It's OK for minimal heading use, but too many instances of sIFR on any one page slows the browser to an absolute crawl. Personally, I'm not a major fan of switching out text for images at all (with the possible exception of logos), although I understand why it appeals to many designers.

The graphic designer who has been doing the arty stuff for the website for me liked the look of sifr and wanted to use it all over the place when he realised I wasn't going to be able to get the site to match his screenshots 100%. Luckily I managed to convince him that it wouldn't be a good idea.

It's very annoying. I've got Firefox exactly how I want it, feature-wise, just it isn't actually a browser any more on account of it not doing the very thing it's supposed to.



Indeed, I wouldn't want to use it for more than a few headings. I've only really used it for the main heading on my own site so far, and doubt I'd use it for more than that. It's a great little piece of kit though.

I don't really have much of an opinion on text-switching. I can see its use for the really arty image-rich websites, but I tend to design as cleanly as I can, so actual text is my preffered option for my own work.
