I have a Netgear DG834N ADSL modem/router thingy wotsit. It plugs into my phone line and gives me broadband. It also has 8 network ports and wireless. I've had it about four years and the wireless bit is getting very flaky - not helped by connecting an increasing number of devices to it.

So I need a new one. Any recommendations? Need the ADSL bit, good to excellent wireless and at least four ethernet ports. Budget is not that much of an issue, but I'm not going to be splashing out a couple of hundred quid for it.

Google for the same model number on eBay. I got a Netgear off eBay once. Never replaced it yet. It's the only router I've ever used.

I assumed the ones on sale now are just old models. I have a DG834PN. All reviews I can find show it to be at least five years old. Have they been updated a few times?

We already have a thread about this.

The summery is basically, buy a Draytek and don't moan about the price.

:this:

Draytek Vigor 2820n

One of these, but not necessarily from there.

Almost had a fucking heart attack when I saw I had started it. (But it was about a router in Ireland, and then DavPaz did a spot of thread necromancy two years later).

Now need to find somewhere that actually sells one.

I would just get another one the same. I have a DG834G and it's the best router I've had. They're only about £20 so see no reason to spend hundreds on one with lots of features that I'll never use, and won't necessarily last any longer.

Yeah, 50 quid router that is sufficient. Or 200 quid router that is awesome but possibly overspecced for what I need.

Argh.

I went for this one (admittedly not ADSL) and it's been ace.

Not sure if they do an ADSL version

edit: Yes, they do

Resurrecting this thread to ask for recommendations to replace our shitty ISP supplied router. Criteria:

  • Must be compatible with Be/O2/Sky/whoever the fuck owns my ISP this week, so that's ADSL2+ I believe
  • Must have at least four ethernet ports, though more would be excellent
  • Must do wireless n (plus the others obviously)
  • Must do GbE as I have shitty network file transfer/streaming speeds which I hope this would help with

It's just for home internet so I don't need advanced features or anything in particular; just something that won't need fucking rebooted all the time and won't randomly refuse to serve internet traffic over the wifi interface.

Still going to recommend a Draytek.

<checks uptime>
<tries to remember url it's been so long>

115 days since it last rebooted. No idea why that was, I think I might have updated the firmware?

I recently kitted our homeworkers out with these (on a variety of ISPs):

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Asus-DSL-N12U-B ... B00AAVW7G4

The general feedback has been positive, some people have reported faster broadband speeds and it seems the wifi is pretty strong.

Yes, but it's not a Draytek.

It only does 100BaseT over ethernet unfortunately.

Yep. Note though that as with all routers, do a firmware update as soon as it's out the box. Whichever Draytek we got for my inlaws last year had an Xbox Live crippling error out of the box that had been quickly fixed in an update.
