Is there any technical reason why T-Mobile phone can't use an O2 (say) transmitter? Different frequencies, maybe?

They run on different frequencies -- otherwise the networks would interfere with each other -- but any individual handset can tune to all the frequencies used by all the operators. (More or less, I'm glossing over some minor details.)

It'd be plugged in because it's connected to the car, though. I've got a Sony head unit with "Tune Tray", a neat little tray that you can plug an iPod into, and it slots away behind the faceplate hiding the iPod from view and allowing head unit/steering wheel iPod control.

I doubt that's charging the iPod when the ignition is off. Is it?

No, although in an ideal world it would notice my Wifi signal while the car's still running, start the sync and then keep it going until it was finished with the ignition off, and then put the iPod to sleep.

That might just work, actually. Depending on the fine details of how iOS 5 works. We'll know more as the betas mature and once it's out.

I used to just leave my Zune turned on, and it would run out of batteries eventually (a surprisingly long time, as it went to sleep after a while and polled the wireless once an hour or something to see if it had anything to do) until you switched the car on, at which point it would spring into life. If you've updated your playlist you hung around for a minute or so until it had synced, then you drove off (assuming it didn't sync before it died).
