I haven't kept it a secret but I'm actually looking forward to this coming out. An FPS that you don't have to think about is just what I'm after at the minute and I was tempted by the balls of steel edition (below) but that was when it was £90.

I've just seen on Amazon/ShopTo that they've dropped the price to £65 and since I have £60 worth of Amazon vouchers sitting there, it'd be rude not too.

Anyway.. I'll leave this thread here and no doubt let it slip to page 4 or 5 before I come back to drum up some more excitement.

I think I missed the bit where it wasn't canned any more. When was that?

Erm... good question? Middle of last year maybe? It could have been before that to be honest... Let's face it, no one REALLY expected this to come out did they?

Well, no, because the company went bust.

Even before then no one thought it would.

I remember working in GAME in 1998 and people were pre-ordering it then. I hope they won't want their pre-orders fulfilled because the store shut down in 2004.

The project basically got handed over to Gearbox, so they've actually gone and made an actual game out of it, as one might expect from a normal videogames developer.

It's probably misleading to say this game has been in development for over a decade. I'm sure Gearbox have just thrown it together using bits of code from Borderlands.

Either way, I don't want it. Duke Nukem has not stood the test of time and I really don't ever want to play a keycard-based navigation nightmare FPS.

Also, why are they fucking about with this and not making Colonial Marines?!

Whilst the five-or-six-quip equipped Duke was moderately amusing character to play in the classic Duke Nukem 3D, I cannot help but suspect that in a full on high-budget new-gen game he'd actually be somewhat irritating.

I mean, why are people getting excited about Duke Nukem, really? I mean, beyond the fact that the original game released an eon ago was mighty fun?

Humbug, say I.

It's one of those games that even if it's crap I'm still probably going to buy. However it is Gearbox so I have reasonable hopes for it.

If I, in any way, shape or form, could afford a gaming PC I would be all over this.

I like my FPS in the Doom/Quake/duke nukem mould.

The multiplayer would be where it was at though. The single player is ok, but for me multiplayer is 100 times as much fun.

Hmmm, there's loads of old-style FPS's that I've gone back to in recent times which are/were tedious shit or just involve the circle dance with the baddies where you both strafe each other. COD's multiplayer is great stuff and I'm assuming you mean the virtually on-rails single player campaigns with their pop up targets, which is a fair point but no less tedious than, say, whizzing around a target blasting it hundreds of time.

I know it's unlike me to be unnecessarily pessimistic, but that picture really does look like the "Sod it, the game's shit so let's shove a whole load of random gubbins into a box to at least make it look like we give some semblance of a flying fuck" Edition.

I like a bit of unrealistic, absurd, frankly quite childish shootingness as well, and we do need more of them compared to the tedious unrealistic, frankly quite childish shooters that try to be realistic and cinematic. But I don't get why people are so excited about this.

No, I'm refering to the multiiplayer which de-emphasises movement and emphasises the inability to respond to an attack without already being dead (Lag issues aside) and samey boring guns.

You know, even if it's great I'm bloody mindedly not going to play it. Not out of a sense of outrage over my 'entitlement' or anything, just because I'm really bored of the inexplicable hype and fanboy adulation towards something that was great purely because of level design and weapons and great DESPITE having to play as a merely mildly amusing, one joke character.

I think it probably depends a bit on how old you were at the time. If you were about twelve when it came out then I can imagine that it might have been literally the most hilarious thing ever. See also: Red Dwarf.

In a game of capture the flag the flag is replaced by *snigger* a woman Oh noes, the controversy! Or is it just some historical playfulness?

NSFW link here but it may appeal if you're a Nuts reader.

You basically play shooting gallery games with girls taking their clothes off if you win... but beware, you have to take YOUR clothes off if you lose!

Right, so shooting people in the face is fine, but being able to slap a woman is upsetting people?

Shooting other men in a combat situation seems ok to me, as they've put themselves there. Historically women have been subservient to men, so feels a bit wrong. It's only a computer game though, so

Not sure exactly how I feel. I can see it being perceived as wrong by the majority, though.

*edit* I suppose it's similar to shooting black people in Resi 5, but at least that had proper context.

'going Gold' refers to the gold master they produce, which they then send for duplication. It basically means 'we're done-ish'.

Although in the time of online updates, it means a lot less than it used to.

I've played the demo of this today and it's erm... yeah...

It seemed to suffer from a bit of jerkyness from what I could tell and like I said on Twitter, it looks like a 12 year old game that's been polished for 12 years with the same rag.

I remain optimistic for the main game because Duke Nukem is kind of cool. :nerd:

TWO GUNS. YOU'RE LIMITED TO CARRYING TWO FUCKING GUNS. THIS ISN'T SUPPOSED TO BE LIKE HALO.

Seriously, what the fuck are they thinking? In and of itself it's dampening my mood for the game, but I'm also worried that it's an indicator of a whole bunch of bullshit modern shooter tropes Gearbox have tried to crowbar in there. Why go to the trouble of releasing a balls out old school shooter if you're going to take ideas from Halo - ideas that whilst good, are intended to add a bit of 'realism' to the game - Duke Nukem doesn't need to be realistic in the number of weapons he can lug around. Idiocy. Really very concerned this'll be shit now. Banking on 7/10 reviews across the board, and we all know what they really mean. Hoping to be proved wrong, of course - maybe it's just the demo.

I'm not sure if you can blame Gearbox. I'm fairly sure they just took everything 3DR made and turned it into a playable game.

Yeah I'm flailing around looking for someone to blame admittedly! It must've been someone's idea though. I will find him. And kill him. Or her.

I'll bring more than two weapons as well.

Word on the street is that the two weapons thing was George Broussard's decision because they couldn't come up with a good way to manage more than two weapons on a controller.

Presumably they've not played any other games since they started DNF development.

This would explain why they use Y to swap weapons and not the D pad. I'm sure the D pad will do something else as it's in the bottom left corner but for now, I WANT MORE WEAPONS!

I'm glad others are as bewildered by it as me. It sounds like a really minor change, but it totally isn't! It's messing with one of the old school shooter fundamentals, DAMN IT!

Perhaps! But I was at least expecting it be entirely faithful to the genre it's trying to emulate/revive. :(

My Balls of Steel edition turned up today and it looks good.. unfortunately, ShopTo deemed it suitable to wrap it in a thin layer of bubble wrap that have all been popped.

The delivery guy also appears to have played football with it in the back of the van so it's going back.

Just something else to add to the "piss me off" pile.
