Inspired by Craster's holiday snaps of bears, I thought I'd start a bear thread (it might get us some interesting search engine traffic too).

I'm off to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons soon, and planning a lot of hiking. I saw a bear at close range (50-100 yards) in the Shenandoah, which was pretty awesome, but I'm aware that I'll be entering proper bear country and ought to be prepared. I know about hanging food up in the trees well away from camp, and carrying bells, but is there any other advice to avoid a mauling?

Also, Henry or Winchester? I prefer the Sharps, myself, but it's a bugger to clean...

My stuffed toys lie head to feet, head to feet, head to feet. That's because they are polar bears.

I got this from someone on this board, and the Grimlet loves it.

It's called "Zio".

So to avoid a mauling, always carry a face-hugger? Onto it! :)

Yes, they really should have propped the bear's jaw open to serve as a headrest.
