How have we not discussed LA Noire yet? Latest Rockstar effort, looks pretty damned sweet, and it's out in a week!

I don't know enough about it from watching trailers, and feel like it's going to be GTA In Another Setting Again. But I am mildly looking forward to it, even if the facial captures freak the fuck out of me.

I'll definitely be picking it up after my exams. Along with Brink, which also looks pretty decent.

The unfinished, unplayable Brink?

It's a detective-em-up! It looks really interesting. I'm hoping the reviews are good, but I'm half tempted to buy it blind because a) it's a Rockstar game and b) it seems to be genuinely trying something new. Also, Wullie and his Rockstar hatred is dang crazy talk!

I loved RDR & GTA the first (esp the London expansion) amused me. That's about it though :)

Hmm. GTA IV is great, but it's undeniably more of the same jazz. RDR is basically the same concept, but in a pretty refreshing setting. I'd be tempted to recommend it over GTA. Unless you've never ever played a GTA game, in which case, close your eyes and take a pot shot at either!

Is this the very same ROCKSTAR game made by the same people who made tiresome London-em-up The Getaway?

Definately sounds like a wait and see to me just on that very fact alone. Assuming it's a fact and not something I just made up.

No.

The people who developed The Getaway are a Sony-owned first party developer. They've never had anything to do with Rockstar.

The only connection Team Bondi (the team developing LA Noire) have with The Getaway is the director who left The Getaway developers and formed Bondi*. One guy. Also, Rockstar often use more than one studio to develop their titles, as is the case with this one. So basically, that one guy's entirely new studio has co-developed the game. Surely that's enough dilution to ensure that your opinion of The Getaway should have no bearing whatsoever on the quality of this game.

Having said that, it might still turn out shite, we don't know. But that seems like a bit of a daft reason to write off one of the most promising games of the year.

*Also note: Team Bondi was set up in Australia. The Getaway guys are based in London. So I imagine the number of people who jumped ship with the director guy is pretty small.

If it's got Walter from Fringe in it, it could be a collaboration between the writers of Rise of the Robots and, er, <insert another shit game here> for all I care.

Rockstar, who made GTA 3, which was a great open plan sandbox game with shit controls and game mechanics, GTA 4 which was a good open plan sandbox game with shit controls and game mechanics, RDR which was a good open plan sandbox game with shit controls and game mechanics.

I wonder how L.A Noire will turn out...

The controls and mechanics in RDR were fine. Don't disagree on the others.

Entirely deliberate, otherwise you'd do nothing but gallop.

Why would you do that? I just drove around going "Ooh! I work there" and beating people up.

Guess I'll have to wait for 'Getaway:Newcastle-under-Lyme' then. :P

I would play them both, but GTA IV first, as RDR is better.

I too would pick RDR over GTA IV on the simple basis that it's the more fun game. GTA IV is an incredible achievement, but bored the fuck out of me by the time I reached the third island and I never went back to it. The Lost And Damned DLC seemed alright, but I got bored of that in the end too.

RDR was fucking sublime though.

I'm interested in LA Noire, but I think I might wait for a review or two before spending my monies.

Myp thinks RDR is so good he refuses to put it in his drive ever again, despite having made someone wait to do the co-op missions with him for practically 6 months now.

Which, um, means LA Noire will probably be... good?

I read on facebook that Ange is going to Portugal in 7 weeks... you should be able to get stuck in while she's gone :)

Guardian review

I wonder to what extent they have given it to mainstream media first because they are more likely to be wowed by a game that is trying to ape Hollywood.

I doubt they've done that honestly - it seems the review has been taken down overnight - did they break the embargo by accident?

Oh, I can summarise the guardian review if you like.

It is a lot like a film.

Like, really a lot.

Ok, maybe it's more like TV.

The shooting a bit clunkier than GTA.

It is a lot like a film.

to me it looks a mix of GTA and Heavy Rain, both of which were cool.
Ive got it on order from Shopto, expecting good things.

Sounds flawed... but I'm still buying. It looks like one of the most genuinely interesting games to come out for a while. The review makes it seem a bit like the fantastic Blade Runner game that came out on PC several years ago.
