First of all, I don't want to seem like I'm banging on and on about this crap, so please tell me to stop if that's what the majority of you want. I want this community to grow, and I'm assuming most of you feel the same way? Again, let me know if I should just let it go, and I will.
Moving on from everything that has happened over the last couple of days - we seem to be doing well now – the forum is busier than it has been for a
long time. Now, how are we going to gain new members and grow this community even further?
We have the site, but it’s pretty much dormant at the moment. I propose we “shit or get off the pot”. Either we up the activity of the site and start getting some content on there, or we put it properly on the back burner. I’m not suggesting we get rid of it, but I am suggesting that if we’re not going to update it, we take action to attract new users in other ways.
Right now, if someone lands here they get a forum with a “Rules and Info” thread tucked away in the stickies section which isn’t exactly prominent, or if they land on UpToJump, they get a blog that hasn’t been updated in a long time.
I suggest that we create a clear, simple landing page at the site root:
Quote:
New visitors don’t have a clue
The title may sound slightly offensive, but it’s true. As far as you should be concerned, a brand new visitor to your site knows nothing. They don’t know about you, they don’t know about your members and they don’t know about your community: you need to educate them.
This may sound obvious, but you need to remember that a first time visitor to your site may not know what it is actually about. For this reason, you need to ensure you educate them at the earliest opportunity. Remember that you only have a few seconds in which to do this – so make the purpose of your forum clear, and ensure it is in a prominent position.

Right now, someone stumbling upon us will see a forum, and as explained in the quote above – you only have a few seconds with your average visitor to reel them in. Every now and then you’ll get a curious person who’ll delve deeper without any guidance and you might get a new member, but that’s not really working for us at the moment.
Making it clear to new visitors what we’re all about and encouraging them to sign up should increase our chances of gaining members, but I reckon we also need to attract
more new visitors.
This is pretty difficult, and where my ideas run out a bit. Short of posting a thread on reddit or other forums advertising the place, or paying for Google ads, I’m not sure what we can do. Has anyone got any suggestions?
That being said, I genuinely think with a clearer explanation of what we're all about, combined with plenty of activity in the form of interesting threads being created on the forum, we should start gaining new members at a greater rate than before even without any form of external "advertising".
