I have around 400 DVDs and CDs to sell, all boxed up in 6 large boxes.

I was going to use http://www.musicmagpie.co.uk to scan them in and get some money for them, but I don't suppose anyone has used these guys before, or a similar site they can recommend
I'm not worried about getting the best possible price but obviously I want to get the most I can for the least hassle. The majority of the DVDs are Region 1, so I need a place that will accept those and I just want rid as I never use them and they are just taking up space.

My other option is to ebay them as job lots, but can I be bothered with the hassle?

I've used Music Magpie before. They're the 'We Buy Any Car' of the marketplace, but it's very easy and they they will pretty much buy anything. For lazy people like me, it's ideal.

A WARNING FROM HISTORY (last week).

I was getting rid of some DVDs and looked at that site but it offered like 30p a disc or something. Not great. So I eBayed them but eBay had an upper limit on postage of £1.25 for 1st class recorded. Fucking what?

Some of the items went for a penny. In hindsight I started a bit low. Anyway...

After an hour of packing them all up, I took them to the post office where I got raped by postage. Overall I made about twenty quid.

Went to my car. Parking ticket for £35.

FUCK MY LIFE, JESUS.

Use the fucking Magpie site. Don't expect much cash for the items though.

DVDs aren't that expensive to send, surely?

I used MusicMagpie to painstakingly input a load of old CDs (fortunately they have a barcode-scanning app), but they didn't bother to get in touch with me with regards to collecting them. I should prod them, but: effort.

I'm expecting 30p each for the majority of discs, with a bit more for box sets and some rarer discs. I'm equally lazy and this seems the best option, even if I did an ebay auction I would really need to type out all the titles if I wanted top dollah, fuck that I'm planning to wave each disk at the webcam and move on...

What do Music Magpie do with them all?

Huh. I thought eBay let you put a higher value in for box sets. It was a while ago I sold anything, though. Last Christmas maybe.

I've used that Magpie thing and whilst it doesn't give amazing prices, it was really easy to do. Scan them all... complete and print off the label... box them up and drop them at the post office.

A few days later you'll have a cheque in the post. I sold a box of mostly crap DvDs and got about 30 quid.

It can be strange with the upper limit of packing costs at times.

I'd eBay them in bundle boxes personally.

And watch where I park

They sell them to van drivers so they can hang them from their mirrors.

Ebay do this for books and magazines as well , which is fine if your selling an individual magazine , but if your selling a 'collection' the upper limit is silly (and for books the upper limit is also some small amount like £2 but a large hardback book or a trilogy popped into a jiffy bag would cost more than that to post).

One other suggestion for Trooper (although it would take more work) would be to post some of the lists of stuff here and ask for something like £1 a disk (plus whatever postage actually worked out at) and you might find some people would take them off his hands for more than Magpie do (and you could then Magpie the rest).

(someone used to do that on here with games before didnt they ? , post massive lists of games and they were looking for something like £1 a disk)

100 CDs (plus a couple of random games that were in the box) in to the musicmagpie experience and £58.51 current total.

Most were 30p as expected, but a couple of weird anomalies.
ICO for the PS2 is still worth £8.49, best get that sold before the remake is out...

It's quite addictive seeing which titles will break the 30p barrier

I've got the webcam setup and it is going pretty quickly, only take 20 mins so far, and that's with checking every box to make sure the CDs are in them.

I think I might just bundle them up into groups of 10 or so, then sell them at a fiver a pop.

Probably get £20 for ICO on eBay, depending on the condition.

You're on a gaming website pretty much everyday dude, did you never think someone might fancy that?

The art card version is the same as the limited edition, which this one is, so I could get £20 on ebay for it I think, with the possibility of more. I might yoink that out the pile, if I want the extra hassle

Had to split the packages as you can only do 500 in one go, so on the second round now 156 DVDs £91.58, most likely another 180-200 to go, looking at the last box!

There are loads of 30p discs, but a surprising amount that go for higher, I think it helps that I have a relatively eclectic collection that is mainly R1.
Criterion discs seem to go for about £3 a pop, and so do a few Disney ones, other ones are totally random.

The last time I physically watched a DVD was years ago. It's pretty much just as quick to download a film than to find it on the shelf these days...
They were on the shelf for a couple of years untouched, then in boxes for the past year untouched, might as well get some cash for them

Anyway, now i'm full of curry, it's back to the waving dvds in front of the webcam...

Average of about 70p an item, which is probably more than I could get for them as a job lot on ebay.
This is all assuming they send the money as expected

So about 500 DVDs in total, plus a load of CDs and a few games, more than I expected.
Biggest surprise of the day? Dungeon Siege 2 on the PC, trade in price, £10...

I still have a fair number of discs that had no barcode, or the code didn't match the disc, or the code wasn't in the system, might put those up as a job lot on ebay. The most interesting of those things being a limited steel box set of Akira, and a Book of the Dead Evil Dead edition DVD. It was certainly fun to go through all my old DVDs, I had forgotten I had owned half of them! I used to order discs by the dozen from the US and Canada, if anything was released that seemed vaguely interesting I would order it and would regularly watch a couple of films a night, this was when I was young and single I'm assuming my "give anything a go" taste and penchant for limited editions has pushed up my average somewhat. Pretty much all the blockbuster films were 30p each.

I have a load (200-300) but was never sure about that number of DVD's via that site.

I think it was about 200 that Darryl put on over about three boxes, you could just fill a box at a time and send that if you wanted to be careful.

I think you need to sell over a 100 at a time to get them to come out with courier, but no reason why that wouldn't work.

He chose to get sent postage labels and did it that way.

How much do you want for those?

Oh right. I thought you'd already sold them to moosikmagpi. Still when it comes to price inc courier delivery, I doubt I'd be able to match them. Although.. I can make profit on the good stuff and sell the junk to magpie..

Still anyway, it's probably less hassle with them.

I do buy DVDs and stuff in bulk though. Just ask The Vision.

Cheque has been sent for this apparently, for £239ish, so not too bad Only one issue is that one of the items was disallowed due to having no barcode, which is an achievement considering I scanned in every item via the barcode! I assume it's because it was a special edition and the barcode was on the inside of the pamphlet. It was only £1.05 in value, but i've emailed them all the same to complain, don't expect them to do anything about it though The other few disallowed items were due to damaged artwork or missing discs, which perfectly possible as I gave up checking after the first 50 or so

Think I might get rid of a load of CDs to Music Magpie.

Why did nobody mention the real life options? Like selling at a car boot or offering to sell them as a job lot to the market guy, or even contacting your local market for a day pitch? You may not get one on normal days but you probably would on half day closing or a sunday.

Because most people can't be arsed?

The idea of visiting a car boot sale makes me break out in a cold sweat.
