Edit: Sony has managed to compromise all your PSN details, email, name, credit card numbers security questions, the lot.

http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments ... _the_real/

Quote:
Ok, I've seen a bunch of speculation of why people think PSN is down, and I thought I should just post what the community knows in comparison to what Sony is telling everyone. The truth is, there was a new CFW (custom firmware) released known as Rebug (http://rebug.me). It essentially turns a retail console into a dev console (not fully, but gives you a lot of the same options that usually dev's only have access to). Anyway, this new CFW was quickly figured out to give CFW users access to the PSN network again via the dev networks. With a little manipulation of the URL's through a proxy server you could get your hacked console back online. Not that big of a deal, right? Well, it also turns out that some people over at NGU found out that you could provide fake CC# info and the authenticity of the information was never checked as you were on Sony's private developer PSN network (essentially a network that Sony trusted). What happened next was extreme piracy of PSN content. Sony realizing the issue here shut down the network. Now, before you go freaking out about the latest information posted about Kotaku, no ones personal information was accessible via this hack. Not to say they couldn't get it, but no one is admitting to it being available. Anyway, that's the real reason for the PSN downtime. Sony is now rebuilding all of it's PSN servers to be more secure and (hopefully) make sure the CFW users cannot get online anymore.

Edit: To those of you saying that this is speculation, you are correct. But, it is speculation based on a lot of facts and the outcome seems to make the most sense.
1. Rebug was released on 3/31/11.
2. First guides of how to use the dev network to get back on COD games on 4/3/11. 3. Word of "shady" sites finding a way to pirate PSN content via the dev networks on 4/7/11 (basing this on posts I had to delete on the website). 4. PSN goes down on 4/20/11

Now, you can believe Sony's PR team which has kept you completely in the dark, or you can see the list of events above and come to your own conclusion. Now, this isn't the first time Sony has fought back against the PS3 modders from getting on PSN. A couple of months ago we had a utility called f*ckPSN that changed the necessary header information that was being sent to Sony to allow modified consoles back online. We were able to use it for about a month. Then came the new TOS, the mass e-mail to PS3 customers, and software update 3.56 and 3.60. So, once again, yes this is all speculation, but it is speculation based on previous actions and known facts.

I've been slack with my online gaming. Gold has lapsed and the box has only been on to play DVDs since the start of April.

There are *games* for the Playstation? Man, I thought people only bought them for the Blu-Ray player.

Buying a PS3 for games is akin to buying a Oric to run a nuclear power plant.

Whilst I rarely go online with my PS3, I think this is worrying.

I saw a video on YouTube of someone who had hacked his PS3. He clicked a couple of buttons and managed to put £10 in his PS wallet to spend in the store. Simple as that!

Where's this going to end? If it is the hackers that's caused them to pull the plug, how far ahead will Sony have to be to keep the network online? We all know that most pirates find a way around copy protection pretty quick, is this going to be the same?

The main reason I am pissed off about this is that I bought the PS3 version of Portal 2 so I could get the PC version and give the PS3 version to my Mum to play.

Except you can't activate the PC version without PSN. PSN has been down since Portal 2 came out.

Meanwhile, I've completed Portal 2. The big twist is that Glados is actually Chell from the future. And I was amazed when the G-man showed up.

I went outside once. It was rubbish. All you do is sit there and go "ooh, isn't it lovely" and have to guard your drink against the inevitable idiot fly who'll fall into it. I can do that indoors while talking to people from America, Turkey, and Japan, and save/blow up the world as well.

I mean, it's not a huge deal or anything, it's just waiting a bit to play a game, but I would not have bought the PS3 version if I knew PSN was going to be down.

Also, if the reason they took PSN down is because a tiny fraction of people had been able to pirate stuff, I would not be impressed.

I was at a friend's on Saturday night and he has a PS3, and it downloaded an update before we played the game. I assume d/ls are from the PSN, so it was up for him at least on Saturday.

No, he's just one of the hackers, so it bypassed the security controls.

Patches don't come through PSN. I think games can even patch without you having a PSN account.

The graphics are good, though.

Sony did bring this on themselves a little bit, but it's crappy for the people that just want to play some games. I'm going to imagine there'll be some sort of compensation.

Harder to get outraged/demand compensation given that it's a free service though, no?

True that. But the games you might have bought specifically to play online cost money.

There is PSN+, and there is the fact that part of the reason they justified the high cost of the PS3 compared to the similarly specced 360 was the free online.

PS3 owners have paid for PSN.

Oh, I'm not denying that it's paid for. But the fact that you don't directly pay for it means that it's tricker to say "I pay X a month for this service and it's not working! Re-imburse me!"

I think there'll be compensation/a free game almost certainly. Free or not, Sony are going to be devastated about this. All Microsoft have to do at this point is sit and watch the millions of PS3-owning CoD players start thinking about making the jump across. My brother is a typical (albeit Xbox 360-owning) example. He plays CoD constantly. If he were unable to play it for a week because Xbox Live was down, he'd probably be bouncing off the walls. Sony know this, and it really doesn't look good for them!

I can't even load up MAG without signing into PSN. No front screen, no playing with bots...nothing. It just refuses to boot up. I only got it cheap so I could play it this week while I'm off work! Come on Sony ya bastards, sort yourself out now will ya. Also, hackers: stop ruining it for everyone else you cunts.

If you have a PSN account, the following has been compromised:

Name, address, email, birthdate, PSN username & password, purchase history and billing address.

And they waited a week to tell you.

Details here.

That's just shocking.

I'm almost as shocked that they seem to have taken so long in telling people.

Who's going to hand over details to Sony's online gaming system now?

They've seriously shafted themselves this time. I give it 24 hours before this is all over the mainstream news, and that's when they'll really be in the shit.

It also mentions that answers to security questions could of been taken. What sort of questions were they because if they are the standard mother's maiden name variety then I think that's an even bigger problem.

Whilst I understand your worry, you're covered for any fraud. You're exchanging potential hassle for definite hassle.

Also, your card and billing detains have almost certainly been compromised numerous times without your knowledge. There is also safety in numbers from such a monumental widespread worldwide fuckup.

Plus, if you wait, you may be able to get compo from Sony in the future ;-)

Yeah I know, I know! It's a debit card though, which is a little bit different when it comes to fraud. With a credit card, you're not really losing any money, and you "get it back" immediately. With a debit card, they're literally removing it from your bank account and then there's bullshit hoops to go through whilst they verify that it really is fraud, and in the meantime your bank account sits empty.

It's comforting that Sony has hired "an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened". It's almost like they don't have a fucking clue.

According to that statement, they haven't got the security numbers, which is the main thing I suppose. Not much comfort considering that's only 3 digits, but I guess it helps.

Seriously though, what a monumental fuck-up.
