I got the 'windows recovery' virus yesterday (despite having firewall and virus protection) and while I've largely sorted my PC, it's still got a few awkward problems

Tweetdeck won't work anymore 'error 3001'. I've tried uninstalling it and AIR and re-installing but still the same.

And thunderbird keeps re-downloading all my mail since 8.30 last night.

Main problem is how do I fix Thunderbird? Any ideas?

From the limited info I can find on error 3001 it looks like it may think you're trying to make 2 connections to the same account.

You could try de-authorizing tweetdeck at https://twitter.com/settings/connections and see how that goes.

Ah ha! Well done. That seems to have sorted tweetdeck. Thanks! I searched all over but couldn't find that info.

So now just thunderbird to fix. Currently I'm setting filters on my gmail account.

You're on your own with Thunderbird I'm afraid, man. Glad Tweedeck's working, it was pretty much a stab in the dark, that one.

I think I figured out the problem. Virus had set everything on the hard drives to 'hidden' so Thunderbird couldn't see its database to know what it had already downloaded. Have set everything to visible now it seems fine.

Go me!

Still I'd have never thought of the Tweetdeck thing so thanks again DavPaz for that.

In my desperation I even tried 'upgrading' to Thunderbird 3. Which I did on my laptop ages ago and severely regretted it. Now I'm regretting it on this PC as well...

It's so slow and cumbersome! Can I go back to V2?

So, I just managed to get the Windows Recovery Virus myself and it's getting rather serious. To the point where I'm stuck in a continuous reboot. Now I have my Windows 7 disk and I've managed to get into the recovery console, but it's soothingly telling me that nothing is wrong and refusing to help. Does anyone know the exact bcdedit.exe command that'll allow me to turn off the "always boot into safe mode" thingy that I did in Windows before it all went tits up?

What is the best free AV these days chums? My new Dell has arrived and I guess I'll need to stick something on it as it's a PC and will attract viruses like a turd attracts flies.

I quite like MSC, but some people I have recommended it to have suffered from virus outbreaks :(

I use AVG on here, and others have recommended something to do with bits?

MSE is widely regarded as the best

I never used to run my PC with an active virus checker though, and never had any problem. The best antivirus is your noggin.

Like I said My girlfriend's sister had this and it still got a virus. I don't think they are the quickest at getting new definitions out.

I would go with AVAST - not avg as I said before they've let me down in the past - as that's what I use on here, or Malware bytes as I've heard really good things about them...

Happy Avast user here. I keep meaning to give MSE a whirl if I get annoyed with Avast as I did with AVG, but it hasn't happened yet.

The second-best is using a VM to run your browser on, or something like Sandboxie.
