Some movement in the tax bands, little else of note, I suspect.

Some new ham-fisted scheme to stop scroungers scrounging (where 'scrounger' is defined as 'someone receiving any state support for however valid a reason').

Free heroin for Scots.

50% tax on TV's above 36 inches.

VAT on newspapers and magazines (I don't see why they should be exempt).

Reduce duty on diesel by 10p.

That is all.

In sympathy with the new Age of Austerity, the House are to give Kate Middleton and Prince William a book of Amazon gift vouchers for the wedding. The Speaker will pass around the envelope and a card from Moonpig for Honourable Members to sign in due course.

I expect to be worse off, but then I always do when there is a budget! :D I don't think there has ever been one that helped me in any way...

What I have never understood is why we allow the government to choose the budget, surely they are the worst people to make that sort of decision. It's like giving a 7yr old the choice of how much pocket money they want and what to spend it on, and expecting the answer to be anything other than "Millions" and "Sweets"

That's a very interesting question. I'm quite torn. I think I like the idea of those tasked with administering the Budget having some say in what goes in, as otherwise you get situations like those in the US where the other party, in control of legislature, can stall its passing indefinitely and each member can get their pet project funded in order for it to pass without any need to be responsible for its implementation.

The business of government requires a budget, and it's right that Parliament has the final say (heck, we cut off a King's head on that point). Yet, we need more control and scrutiny over spending, though in fairness the Public Accounts Committee does sterling work into government excesses.

1.) 50% tax on Supermoons.
2.) First £8,000 spent on caviare or champagne is tax deductible, to stimulate the suffering British Exclusive Nightclub industry.
3.) Excise duty on wool exports to increase, to prevent Flemish merchants from reaping all the profits themselves. This will rise to 3 groats per bale, to be collected by Her Majesty's Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports.
4.) Zero tax on Pogs.

So, corporation tax cut of 2%, falling by 1% year on year, to be funded by the banking levy.
50p rate stays, no surprise there.
100MM added to the science budget, and 200MM in national railway investment

Unexpected - personal tax allowance raise without an accompanying increase in the band limits.

1p of fuel and business mileage rate to rise to 45p a mile.

The business mileage rate increase is about time and to be honest I wasn't expecting it. Probably worth about £400 a year to me.

Games industry tax break
I've been through the R&D rule changes 10 times and found nothing specific about the games industry.

Oh, the crafty sod.

The cost of beer is still going to rise, according to the Grauniad, but he's not adding anything on top.

Grauniad wrote:
Beer duty will rise by 7.2% at midnight on Sunday as a result of the alcohol duty escalator, which automatically raises duty by 2% above inflation. This will add 4p to the price of a pint of beer, 15p to the price of a bottle of wine, and 54p to the price of a bottle of spirits.

Make your own. There's no duty and from what I've seem it's fairly easy with one of the modern kits. Someone was telling me about it a few weeks back and aside from a few quid for some tank things, it's very cheap.

Brown ale: Clean bucket, 4 jars malt extract from Boots, 500g dextrose, half a teaspoon yeast if you like, 5 gallons water. Wait 14 days.

Nettle beer: pick 500g nettles, leave in te dark overnight, strip the leaves off and stick in muzzlin bag, boil, keep in the water overnight. Clean bucket, 4 jars malt extract from Boots, 500g dextrose, half a teaspoon yeast if you like, 5 gallons water + nettle water. Wait 14 days.

Yeah, cover the bucket as you need the yeast to go anaerobic to produce alcohol.
