Can anyone recommend any umbrella companies, or tell me which ones to avoid. I'm supposed to be doing some work next week, but have found out that I need to be paid through an umbrella company, which sounds like a bit of a pain.

i will ask our IT contractors if they use them. I know my ex-wife used one which was quite good, I just can't ask her :)

Spook - currently contracting at an umbrella company - Parasol. Biggest in the UK, fully HMRC compliant and you can do it all on-line through their website.

Costs £27.50 a week which is a bit more expensive than some of the other cheaper jobs but you do get a better level of service.

Ah, I knew we had a few contractors in our midst. Without looking like I'm too lazy to read their website. Do I just pay them £27.50 a week when I'm using them, or is it an on-going thing? This is only for two days work at the moment.

Only when you are working do they charge you. It's a flat rate so you pay the same if you're working 5 days a week on £700 a day or 2 days at £200 a day etc.

No joining / leaving fees.

Which agency is it through? Most of the big agencies have an existing relationship with Parasol to make life a bit easier.

It's People4Business, I'm not entirely sure they're classed as an agency though.
I have since found out the work might be cancelled anyway, although this may well not be the last time I have to consider an umbrella company.
I've also been recommended Pay Matters by a different agency, if anyone has heard good/bad things about them?

Well, the work has been postponed for now, but I shall keep this thread as a handy reference if the need arises again in the future.
Thanks, people.
