Quote:
“It’s not like Minecraft,” says project lead Jacob Porser, who with Markus Persson has wanted to make the game for five years. “It’s very different from Minecraft. It’s more along the lines of a collectable card game. But it’s not just that – we’ve added a lot.”

It’s more collectable card game meets board game meets role playing. The simple name was a temporary placeholder while they tried to think of something else. But it got stuck.

Quote:
Minecraft, the indie phenomenon of 2010, has meant the company is secure to experiment with something completely new. Selling over 1.4 million copies, at €14.95 a time, works out to just shy of twenty-one million euros, and it continues to pour in. That’s slightly more than most indie developers have to hand. It’s meant they can expand to a company with its own offices, and in a couple of days time a total of nine staff. And about half of them will be working on Scrolls, aiming to get it into a purchasable beta by the end of this year.

Quote:
Set in a traditional fantasy world, players will initially buy a pack of game cards, which are played as units and spells on a game board shared by two opponents.

“At the core it’s a collectable card game, but it’s also a board game,” says Jacob. “It’s combining the two. As you place your units or your buildings, or your siege weapons, you place it on the game board to play against your opponent. It’s not only about designing a proper collection of scrolls [cards], and the tactical aspect of that deck, but it’s also about the tactical sense of how to place your units on the game board.”

Players will buy the game, and with that will come a randomised starter deck of scrolls. Should they want more, they can buy additional card packs, as with any other CCG, and of course not know what new cards they’ll receive. And they have many other plans for adding to your deck. “Obviously it’s going to be a multiplayer game,” continues Jacob. “We have a lot of fun ideas for the community. We’re going to let you place your Scrolls in an auction house, trading with other players, and a lot of different multiplayer templates. Ranging from a friendly game, testing out your latest deck, or you may enter a more long-term league, where you get ranked. That can go on for a couple of months. We also plan on having a lot of tournaments. Small ones, and large, like a world championship. We’re talking to some great partners about that.”

Hmm. Could be fun! Micro transactions ahoy though!

I loved Magic: The Gathering, but the business model is a horrendous money sink. That's why CCGs are dying. It's all about CCG games where you don't buy boosters now. Stuff like Dominion and Thunderstone.

Haven't played thunderstone yet, but Dominion is so very very good that a good computer game version could do very, very well. It seems a bit backwards for Mojang to ignore the huge revolution in card games.

That said if the betas cheap I might give it a go.

As good as minecraft is, the micro-transactions and charging for betas shows a remarkable disdain for the users (or complete naivety about the market). I can understand why charging for the minecraft beta was necessary, but if they charge for the Scrolls beta, I think they will be surprised at the backlash.

Change that to say "Why the lone bedroom developer thought it was necessary."

Do we reckon they'll charge for the beta this time though? Surely they ought to slip into something resembling a normal developer model now? I think Trooper's right - charging people for a second unfinished game just wouldn't be the thing to do in my opinion. Notch had good reason to with Minecraft, but not now with a development team and 20 million Euros in his skyrocket. It needs to be finished before he sells it.

MNNNNGGGGGHHHH.

And also, WHY?! Are they going to be "that company what releases unfinished games and charges for them"?

Fucking hell, I even bolded that bit of the quote. I'm such a spaz.

From what I read from other places:

Scroll will either be free or very cheap. You can earn in game money to buy cards and you can also purchase additional in-game money with real money. There will be some things that only real monies can get you.

ALSO this will be developed primarily by the other staffers meaning they are expanding their portfolio and hopefully reducing risk of becoming a one trick pony.

AND while they are in the media spotlight it makes sense (to me) to try and keep as much attention as possible on them as next year they might not have access to this sized audience.

True but I think that's part of the fun too. It's a game that works but every other week there's something else in it that keeps you exploring and building.

It doesn't feel like a beta or a test version very often it feels more like an adventure every time you load it.

Beside "I wants money": No, no he didn't - not to start with, anyway.
And he charged for the Alpha as well, don't forget.

But if he hadn't, he wouldn't have been motivated to develop it much further, wouldn't have left his job to devote full time to it, etc etc.

Why not?

He'd have had to start charging something eventually, as the popularity would have been killing his servers.

But if it hadn't taken off, and he just stopped (which I doubt he'd have done), people would have been rightly angered.

Lack of time? Increasing demands from users becoming an annoyance which isn't compensated by anything? Why does most "free" software with a sole developer languish fairly early on?

Because the idea isn't as good as they thought, I reckon. Or because nobody's interested.
I'd be surprised if he started Minecraft thinking about the money.

This Scrolls thing, on the other hand...

True.

There's also the notion that charging for an item *makes* it worth something, and thus possibly gives it greater uptake and having a greater adherence by users, than if it had been free.

We can't know what would have happened though, really.

No, for sure.
I do think there's something "off" about charging for a Beta product, though. I know it's only a label, but it just feels wrong to me.

Let's put it this way - if that magazine I've just ordered arrives with a load of half-finished articles I'm going to be sad. But I wouldn't expect it to, as I've paid for it.

I mean why bother setting up a new company if he's already rich; not why bother completing his existing games.

Grim..., you're forgetting the first version of Minecraft, which just had world building and no enemies or resources (Classic, I think it was called.) That was free from day one and stayed that way. Also, whilst the whole "charging for betas" thing could be misused, Notch didn't misuse it; he was perfectly upfront about what you were (and weren't) getting.

I don't think there's anything at all wrong with the way Minecraft was sold/developed/continues to be developed. At the point I bought it, I would've been perfectly happy with the product had he ceased development the day after. However, it's the idea that they're making a new game and then doing the same thing again. There's really no need to do that, is there? Why not just release a finished product this time?

Minecraft made sense - he was making it on the side, and it was in a perpetual "alpha/beta" state. But they're a different beast altogether now. I dunno, it's early days yet, but I agree with Grim... in that "it feels weird to me", although, not with Minecraft - just this new game.
