We recently got a new telly which looks pretty impressive and all.

Apart from the fact it appears to have no native component ports on the back.

I wish to play on my Wii using component output. I already have a third-party component cable I bought from Gamestation recently. Will I have to buy a whole convertor box for ridiculous pounds or does a more simple cable exist?

Thankie.

(It's a Murphy 32883 if that's familiar to anyone.)

Doesn't have component? That's odd for a new Tv isn't it?

Why don't you take a picture of the ports you do have and I'm sure we'll be able to find the best connection for the Wii.

Bear in mind though, there's no HD output for the Wii so it may end up being scart.

It has been known for budget tvs to only offer component through a scart socket, which requires the appropriate adaptor.
Although it's usually included due to not being a commonly buyable part.

While I don't really have the time to rearrange the whole setup so that I can get my camera behind the TV, I can quote from its manual.

Manual for "Murphy 32883 IDTV HD DVD" wrote:
You can use PC input to enable YPbPr signal sonnection (sic =P) with a device that has component output. Connect the YPbPr to PC cable between the PC INPUT on the TV and the component video outputs of your choice.
Which seems to imply that it does component output through VGA. I've been informed elsewhere that I can get a "coupler" and a VGA-male-to-component-male cable to go with it for the purpose, though I'd have to check if the nearest town to me sells both of these.

Ooooh, very interesting find indeed. That won't need any converter, right?

In other finds, it appears an HDMI to Component cable exists.

All the reviews seem pretty negative though. When they say HDMI is encrypted, does that apply to everything? If it was worth going for I'd probably snap it up as an HDMI plug is easy to plug in properly compared to a VGA plug and having to mess with those side-screws every time.

Avoid this - HDMI is Digital, Component is Analogue. The chances of it working are very slim indeed.

Saw that also, though I was a bit worried by one of the review comments there...

I'm no expert but it seems you need a converter if you want to use this cable. Without one the cable is completely useless. Unfortunately the seller isn't clear on this. Possibly so they can fleece a few quid out of the few people who aren't computer nerd's. It's time the description was updated to reflect this. Or maybe they should simply be reported to trading standards for dishonest advertising.
Do they mean a converter box is needed for connecting with laptops only? A Wii doesn't need a box as such, right? Will a coupler work just as well?

A similar looking 1.8m cable is also on Amazon and looking somewhat cheaper, though again I was left umming and aahing following a review comment...

if your buying this cable please check the TV manual or back of TV right under the componets if its says PR - PB - Y it will not work
Is "PrPbY" a different configuration or is it another name for "YPbPr"?

As your TV claims to be able to take component over VGA, it should work as the tv is doing whatever conversion is needed.
Note: Should rather than will. It's your best hope of getting component into the tv.

Same thing - It's three leads/plugs.

Thanks, MrD. I've been told btw that a coupler is only necessary for a male/male cable if I can't find a male/female cable, but as what devilman linked to earlier looks like a male/female effort I could just plump for that and avoid needing anything else to go with it, right? Though saying that, it looks pricier than the cables on Amazon.

Sorry for the unexplained link. Yeah, that's basically a coupler, converting one plug to another. But, like Dave has said, that's pretty much all you need

Well, nearly - you need to be careful of the gender of the plugs. Off the top of my head I can't remember which VGA port you want, but the RCA end will need to be female to connect to the leads out of the wii. The one linked (http://www.amazon.co.uk/1-5m-VGA-Compon ... B002NPZSSO) has male RCA ends.

Edit: After a quick check, you want a male VGA to female RCA (Or a suitable gender converter for the linked lead here)

The one on the link I posted meets that criteria doesn't it?

Just out of interest, where did the whole concept of "male" and "female" ports/cables come from? It's pretty hard to imagine a cable representing "femininity" somehow. :p

Crikey, seems the silly postage cost coupled with the 20% VAT means this one cable will set me back 18 squid! >.<

Actually, how about this cable off eBay?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/S-VGA-Male-3-RCA- ... 35afac47d3

(Ignore the conflicting pictures on the page, seems the description confirms it to be male-VGA and female-RCA.)

Looks significantly cheaper, but am I at the risk of buying a duff knock-off?

Looking at the description further, it mentions "VGA-male/RCA-female" in its header but then describes it like it's a "VGA-female/RCA-male" version. :S

Already sent off a question asking for clarification before I take the plunge.
