I was listening to this the other day, and I noticed that I had Bowie in both ears singing the same thing, but slightly different tones/styles whatever.

I really liked the effect, but are there any other songs that do the same thing?

So he multi tracked the vocals, and put one on the left channel and one on the right?

That's ace.

All I can think of that's similar is Innuendo by Queen where the song rolls between channels at points.

A lot of bands from that era did interesting things with the stereo mix, particularly the prog rock guys e.g. Jethro Tull did some fab double tracked vocals and lead guitar breaks on Benefit. The whole album is good, but 'To Cry You A Song' is possibly the best example.

Are you sure? Weren't all of the Beatles albums released in mono originally?

Siouxsie does lots of this sort of thing. Only even more complex. I've done it too, without knowing Bowie had done it.
Not as well made perhaps but still

I think the early ones might have been, then there was a period when you could by either a mono or stereo version of albums (this doesn't apply to just the Beatles, of course), indicated by the colour of the inner sleeve border on LPs - red for mono, blue for stereo IIRC, but I'm not sure if there was a time when you could ONLY get stereo versions on vinyl.

Their wikipedia page suggests all their early stuff was released in both formats.

I'm just going on their reissues last year, or the year before, where IIRC there was a debate about which version to buy and it was explicitly stated that all their early stuff was released in mono only, but had been remastered in stereo for the reissue. It makes sense as I imagine next to no-one had a "stereo" in the early 60s

I was going to add to this thread earlier that my first explicit experience of this "stereo" technique was probably Black Rose by Thin Lizzy and I've just discovered that Gary Moore who played guitar on that album died this morning.
