Jesus. Is that a real grab?

Why are they allowed to call themselves a news channel? Seriously.

Catching up on the weekend now. These protestors are bloody champions.

Some of you were probably watching live when that guy with the bag stood up to the line of tanks in Tiananmen Square. So you may have a good idea of how you're going to feel watching the Egyptian protestors confronting an attack by the police by stopping to pray, while the water cannon shoots directly into them.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBtYLBQPRGQ

Skip to about 3:00 if you're pressed for time. Sound quality is annoyingly choppy, but it really doesn't matter. Fucking incredible. And there are still people in the world who are stupid enough to call Islam a 'violent' faith.

Undercover police caught looting and entering occupied homes to scare people and discredit protestors. BBC journalists placed under 'house arrest'. Al Jazeera continues to defy its ban, providing better coverage than any station I've seen (fuck off with the Hilary Clinton / William Hague footage, CNN).

Reports from Alexandria indicate that the crowds are getting angry with continued US support of Mubarak. Israel refuses to confirm or deny shipping arms to Egypt (read: of course they did). People queing for bread around the country. Lots of looting, lots of worry and suspicion growing. Protestors are calling for a general strike. Government forces accusing foreign journalists (principally al jazeera) of inciting violence, but then they've also been saying that the tens of thousands of people in Tahrir Square were just ants or something.

The police are being reinstated around the country after mysteriously disappearing (leading theory seems to be hat they were busy looting and fucking shit up so people would call for them back), and it sounds very much like they're moving in to kill the bejesus out of people. Dawn is breaking on what may be a day of terrible massacre.

I am very reluctant to go to bed.

Al-Jazeera reporting that six of their journalists have been arrested by the military.

I get to work and the big story of the day is a referee having a vagina. I mention the whole Egypt thing and it's "ooh, it's terrible, must be so scary. They can't even leave the airport!"

If anyone hears any major news this afternoon, please put it in here - I can't check the decent sites from work.

I imagine Israel / the US are really, really hoping that we don't get a repeat of Iran in '79, and end up losing a relatively pro-western leader and gaining an equally oppressive but anti-US, anti-Israel one.

So far, they and we are doing a great job of encouraging this to happen by completely failing to do anything at all for the Egyptians.

Would you prefer we wade in and start cracking heads? This is very much an internal conflict and I prefer if everyone else kept their cruise missiles to themselves, thankyouverymuch

That's not even remotely what I was suggesting. Dropping the dictator would be enough. Actually voicing support for the people instead of patronising them by telling them not to be violent would be enough (particularly for the US, a nation founded on this kind of revolutionary behaviour). We propped up this regime for 30 years - our governments should do all they can to distance themselves from it before it's too late.

BBC reporting that Egyptian state TV (woo - third hand info!) has announced the cancellation of all trains tomorrow ahead of a proposed 'million man march' against the regime.

New government in place. People still filling up the Tahir Square in Cairo.

Well, the next 24hrs and surely going to test how much Mubarek wants to hang onto power. All it takes is a few Generals to politely decline an order.

Heineken has suspended beer and soft drinks operations at their Egyptian plants. Employees have been advised to remain in their homes and "The brewer last night flew ex-patriot exployees out of the country amid escalating tension between protesters and security forces."

Could still be a battle on their hands - the police and security forces number in the hundreds of thousands, and they seemed extremely unpopular with the people. Catching up now - more protests expected tomorrow. Other countries in the region are starting to speak at last. Christ knows what Libya, Syria, Israel et al are going to do.

People in Tahrir Square (Cairo) are saying it's well-ordered and there's a very peaceful, co-operative atmosphere, but that things are getting difficult practically, and the army checkpoints are getting a bit antsy. Alexandria reportedly somewhat calmer than previously, but in Assuir the police never left. Unsure what that means - I dread to think what's going on outside the major cities, and what will be uncovered when this is all over.

A google document and some sort of list on facebook of "missing" civilians was circulated in a bid to help people. Several people are tweeting to say that this list is a fake by the police, trying to get information on people. Sounds a bit weird, but apparently a lot of people on the list aren't missing at all. :S Police have been spotted moving back into Cairo, but these are unarmed according to protestors - traffic police in particular (soldiers and civilians have been filling in all weekend)

There have been some amazing pictures and videos, the scenes are breathtaking - the army moving tanks to give protestors shelter from police gunfire, stereotypical shouty bearded arab man yelling at the top of his voice about muslims, christians and atheists demanding their rights and refusing to leave, people staring down and vandalising water cannons, chasing the police off a bridge... incredible stuff. Seems like Mubarak's plan is to stall for time until they're starved out, but they're not going anywhere.

Apparently a hot air balloon with a sign reading "Mubarak, get out" flew over the square a few hours ago :D

Unbelievably, none of us thought of this twitter gag first:

Quote:
"I thought building the pyramids meant you could change government without anarchy."

Shame on us.

Protestors twattering live from Tahrir Square - a giant TV screen is being assembled to broadcast real news (a dude was earlier shouting "long live al jazeera" in the square, to great applause - they have put the rest of the world's media to shame on this. They will surely get their piece, but mostly it sounds like it will be used for broadcasts directly from the people), in the middle of the capital of a country under a total government lockdown.

Army spokesmen have said they will refuse to fire on civilians if ordered. At least one officer has gone on the record saying he is loyal to the people, not the president. Film producer Louis Lewarne live tweets:

Quote:
This regime has nothing left. The few police on streets terrified they will be lynched. Police can never return to previous brutality

And a Google employee has been missing for several days, raising the possibility that Google will invade Africa.

Not only that, they've apparently stated that they "acknowledge the legitimate rights of the people", which is pretty much a giant "Fuck You" to Mubarak right there.

Tahir Square filling up.
BBC reporting that journalists are having their equipment confiscated.
NY Times suggesting Mubarak's new vice-president is open to talks.
Going to be an interesting day ( I can only have the Al-Jazeerah text updates open, rather than streaming the broadcast)

Something similar happened with the violence against Coptic Churches a while back, with Muslims forming human shields around them to prevent attacks against them. And the film of the guys carrying on kneeling and praying despite being blasted to hell by water cannons was pretty impressive as well.

Aye - it's clear that for a couple of days now, Mubarak has been to cut the country off so he can murder the crap out of some protestors without consequence. The illegal (and absolutely, totally morally right) reporting by the press and the defiant hacking and networking by the people themselves isn't just great journalism - it's probably saved thousands of lives.

Top marks to whatever diplomats or quiet background politicians have presumably been putting pressure on the administration there to back off the journalists that have been caught out as well, natch.

And of course, groom all his placemen in the new regime.
Can't see the crowd wanting this long an encore.

Have there been any reports of him being seen anywhere except in his compound?

Not that I've seen. On friday people suspected it was a tape and he'd already gone. Since then even the reporters have been asking where he is, although at one point he was reportedly in Sharm.

Fucking hell. CNN is reporting "cheering" crowds. They are cheering "not enough", "get out", "You're going, we're staying", "Revolution until death", "the people want to topple the president", "Fuck Mubarak with many spikes"*. Arseholes.

It looks like the crowd aren't going to spark out, but they're not going anywhere. I can't see any way out of this but the army deciding enough is enough and rolling a tank over Mubarak.

*Well they SHOULD.

Some protestors on the move. Lots of people seem to be moving in the same direction quite decisively. There's been talk of a handful of pro-mubarak protestors for a few day (rumours abound that they're paid actors), but they've been kept apart by the army. I hope that continues, because they're outnumbered about 10,000 to 1.

Lots of talk of marching on the palace on friday. I don't doubt that they'll do it if they have to.

Edit: Clarification: The clash with the pro-mubarak crowd happened in Alexandria's Mahatit Masr square, not Cairo's Tahrir square where the millions are.

30 years of oppression with all the nasty police corruption, secret police and disappearances that go with it, if I understand this right it was this food shortage that broke the back.

He's been president for life since 1981, heading a corrupt police state.

It looks like it could kick off. The pro-mubrak lot have appeared and the two are meeting. Some protestors are attempting to form human chains to keep them apart, but...

It's kicking off. A tank is nearby, trying to contain it.

Gunfire. It's happening false alarm.

Edit: In Alexandria.

Army firing into the air, not at people. Attempting to calm crowds down with that and rolling a tank close to them.

People all over the place. The flashpoint seems to be an isolated one, but it's hard to tell. Calming down a little now, but the groups are still milling around close to each other. Very worrying.

Human chains are now several deep. Seems like they're organising a passive blockout of the pro-mubarak lot.

Al jazeera live feed of both squares: http://english.aljazeera.net/watch_now/

BBC analysis/reporting has been quite decent, but al jazeera's footage is largely better and more extensive, and far less obsessed with the absolutely nothing the US has been saying (this is going to cost them an awful lot when this is over).

Also twatter tags #jan25 , #egypt , #mubarak for some direct updates, but they've been less frequent as the internet lockdown has gone further, and as protestors there are presumably too busy.

Worth checking youtube, too - I've not been at many videos as my pc is too crap, but there've been egyptian hackers getting footage online all week.

twatterer evanchill is live in the square, as are occupiedcairo and sandmonkey (the latter has been moving around a bit more) and several others.

Evanchil reports that "A crowd of 100 or so just marched out of Tahrir and along the road toward State TV. Losing steam, but 1st time I've seen group leave square."

Seems like it's calmed down now. Two groups of pro-mubarak protestors (about 300, according to one report) appeared not long after the speech and started a fuss. A tank rolled around nearby and soldiers fired into the air. Between that and protestors (possibly of both camps, hard to tell) trying to control themselves, it seems to have calmed down.

It didn't "turn violent" - a part of the protest was jumped, and there was a close call. No sign or reports of injury on either side.

The rest of the country remains basically dead air, though. Very little information coming from the other cities, and fuck knows what's happening in the country.
