So, er, yeah. As some of you know, I've been ripping off Advance Wars on the DS creating a new turn-based wargame, But On The Internet. This (apart from a bit of tidying up) is pretty much in beta now, so anyone that wants to have a go on it can do.

When it works (which it seems to do at the moment), I'm quite obscenely proud of it.

Spelling error in the quickstart:

To fire, move next to another unit, choose fire form the menu, then click on them (they'll have a red square behind them).

Oohh I love turn-based strategy games. (Naked War, for example, would be the best game in the world ever but for the few bugs that the Pickfords could never iron out.)

When I feel less like I'm dying of the flu, I'll take a proper look.

Is it turns by email or do both people have to be online or what?

I had the same problem as Bobby, but if you plug your details into the page the registration on the home page sends you to, it goes through fine.

All looks pretty cool so far - presentation is pretty swizzy and I love the space cow itself. I think "Space Morters" should be "Space Mortars" and I think I may have just gone into negative power in game 27 though.

Thanks!
You've got 1000 units of power left in match 27, according to the database.

I will look at this soon. I'm in mong time at the moment, which is traditional for me at this time of the year, where I literally switch off for a week and a half, so RTS is off the scale of "you expect me to think!"

Took me a while to have a game, but I've had a go on that site now - it's much more "Advance Wars" than Space Cows.
It seems to work well, although it reloads the page every time you move.
CO powers though, the show-off ;)

Thinking caps on, Beex.
I'm trying to figure out a scoring system. What I've got so far is that everyone starts off with 50 points, out of a maximum of 100.
If you beat someone else that has the same score as you, you get five points and they lose five.
If you beat someone with more points than you, you get half of the difference (minimum of five, max of twenty) and they lose the same number.
What if you beat someone worse than you, though?

2 points for beating someone equal, or with 5 points, 1 point if they are 6 points or more lower than you, 3 points if 6 points or more higher?

Lose 2 if equal, lose 3 if lower, lose 1 if higher.

I think the problem there is your using the smallest unit for your 'win against a level person'

So what you actually want is a smaller unit for beating someone lower than you (in your scoring numbers above i'd have chosen 2)

Any reason for sticking with 5 points as the minimum unit ?

Not really.
Mali's idea is simpler but doesn't have an large enough number of points for a 10 person beating a 90, I think.

In which case do this:

points = difference between rankings/3

so a 10 beating a 90 would get 27 points bringing him up to 37 and the 90 down to 63?

BUT if the 90 beat teh 10, then maybe he should get

(Winner score/loser score)/3

I dunno.

I'll have a think over this.

It's too volatile - you don't want to base it only on the last game.

You'd probably want something like the trueskill thing, but I believe that's patented.

Or, if you fancy fucking with the achievement whores, just have the game add or deduct and arbitary number of points for spurious reasons such as "Great opening!" or "Most units built" and then watch them go mentals trying to work it all out.

Also also: I'd not be sticking to ints, I'd be using floats and rounding to int to for display purposes. It'd sort out quite a few scaling issues.

use this but stick a modifier of in, so the 10 beating a 90 would get 3 points modified by this, rounded UP to the neareast integer.

3x(90/10)=27

And if the 90 beats the 10 then

1x(10/90)=1

So

Points= Win point x (opponent score/your score)

And I dunno about lose scores.

Elo ratings? You could probably normalise it so it's out of 100 too. There's bound to be libraries that do it for you so you wouldn't have to work it all out yourself.
