Ford Ka's are absolutely bloody awful, seriously don't get one. My mum has Ford tattooed across her very soul hates my dad's year old one. The build quality is shocking, the back end is ugly as sin, and there simply isn't enough room in it - plenty of cars the same size out there but none have the claustrophobia or negative boot space of the Ka - the mini cooper they had for years for example.

Meanwhile, I disagree with practically everything Decca said - my missus used to have one and it was ace fun.

Personally, I don't like Ford Kas. Not as bad as a Corsa, though. The new Fiesta (goes back to 08, I think?) is excellent, though.

I saw a new Corsa the other day it had a centre-exit exhaust. I assume it's meant to look sporty but it looked more like they'd given it a little poop-chute.

I saw someone like Kalmar on Come Dine With Me last night.

He was fixing up his own house and kept pigs near his work and was absurdly polite and a very good cook. He won, too.

No idea about the new shape Ka, but the old shape one was excellent fun. I need to sell my existing car this year for something cheaps, and I'd definitely consider a Ka. Only the size would bother me. Not too worried about the girly image, I'd just have to get it in some kind of manly colour, perhaps some kind of desert camo job?

Did you know that it is theoretically possible to become the head of the Civil service with only 4 grade C GCSEs? True dat, they have a promote from within thing and that's all you need to get in at the lowest levels. I know of several department managers who have got there this way. The civil service loves this sort of thing because it looks very good on paper, also it saves them money.

This is why I object to snide arsey people on the other end of the phone when I call the income support line, you would have got this job regardless of whether you have a masters degree or left school at 16 and got one promotion, it's all about luck - was your name at the top of the pile, picked at random or did the bloke that took your application form take a shine to you? and you know what you snobby cow, there are hundreds of people who have already filled in the form for your job and would dearly love to have the opportunity to take it if you hate it as much as you seem to do.
Shame she was so incompetent that she couldn't be bothered to do the "hello my name is X how can I help you" line even the most appalling BT broadband call centre can manage. I very nearly got seriously in the shit because of this woman - post turned up with my IC re-claim form which was due in tomorrow, she went "we are aware there are problems with the post" and went to put the phone down on me, without even finding out my name. I had to ask her to make a note on my file and extend the deadline and she actually sighed at me.

She better be really pretty because most people at that level are on rolling contracts and they really do listen to the recorded calls when they are up for renewal.

Wooo!

I've been back at work for ... 35 minutes, and already I've found enough mistakes and brainwrongs to make me despair. A typical case at work begins thusly: "Hm, someone wants to do/know x, eh? Okay, let's see what their situation is.... What. What? What the .... but you can't.... that's not supposed.... WHAT! Oh for ... who was here in March 2008? Anyone?

Sigh. I'll be over in records for however long it takes to un-screw this student."

Not so in our Titanium. All the plastic has a nice soft touch coating. The knobs are solid and everything feels like it cost something

Miss Malabar has a Ford Ka now. It's a decent little car, fairly nippy (compared to her old car, at least) and handles pretty well. The looks are awful, and all of the space appears to have been given to the front passenger as the driver has none, nor do the back seats or boot.

I'm not sold on it overall. I can see why some like it, and I can see why some detest it. As a temporary car for a girl, it seems fine.

I can't remember which one I had, but the whole thing felt really, really cheap. There's no doubting Ford's engineering in making a car that feels good to drive, but from a comfort point of view it was almost as bad as the old 206.

I used to drive one comfortably. Well, until someone I knew saw me in it, of course. They are pretty much at the top of the "girls car" list.

What the fuck is Miss Malabar doing, then? She's constantly complaining about feeling squashed in. Maybe it's her small legs forcing her closer to the wheel?

We've had this argument before Cavey. I think pretty much all manufacturers nowadays build their cars to broadly equal quality controls nowadays. Any mass produced car will undoubtedly have problems, that's a simple fact which I'll get back to in a moment.

Yes, there's a difference in the materials used on the premium brands, and VW is a classic example of this with their sliding scale modular cars across their various marques. The big difference is that if you drop >40k on a Merc/BMW/Jag/Audi and you get a problem, then the dealers will smoothly, rapidly and efficiently deal with it if the anecdotal evidence I've heard is true. It was probably true until a few years ago that you wouldn't get this treatment from the likes of Ford/Vauxhall/PSA/Fiat, but I've heard that they've improved considerably in the last couple of years.

The simple fact is this, there's a possibility that any new mass produced car you buy, regardless of who makes it, can have problems. It's how willing to look after you the dealer is transforms that from being a horror story to one of undying love for the brand. IIRC your first TT was a bit of a lemon but Audi bent over backwards to look after you, didn't they. You didn't get the same treatment from Ford with your cars.

The thing is, I've had experience of numerous Fords in the last decade that have been very reliable, Hondas that have been similar but no better, VWs that have ranged from fine to fucking awful, terrible Fiats (electrical problems obviously and the dealers were beyond fucking useless) and I have friends with Porsche's, Beemers, Audis, Mercs and Jags and I do enquire what the ownership experience is like. The "satisfaction" is wholly dependent on how the problems are sorted. Out of that lot the only one who had no problems was the Jag owner, the Beemer had numerous niggling problems which were fixed quickly, the Audi was fine with some teething issues and the Merc was an absolute dog which needed a new engine with 30k miles on the clock, had paintwork problems that required a respray(It was a CL600, which correct me if I'm wrong is a >£100k car). My friend's Porsche had a problem with a porous rear alloy leaking air all the time and Porsche failed to resolve it in the three years he owned the 997 S.

The thing is, I know this isn't empirical but all I'm suggesting is that all modern cars can be faulty. The dealers make a difference and hopefully if you're paying a premium for a premium brand, there's no guarantee that the car will be better built, but you WILL get better looked after.

Hell, one friend of mine went to another friend's 60th birthday and parked his 2 week old 5 series estate on their lawn and couldn't move it the following morning as it had sunk into the lawn. BMW sent a tow truck at no charge to get it off the lawn. Yes, it's a £50k car, but that's the kind of service I'd want if I was dropping that kind of money on a new car.

To be fair mate, I pretty much agree with all you've said there - of course, anything mechanical and/or electrical can, and will go wrong, and there's much to be said for how efficiently or otherwise a manufacturer or their dealer network sorts things out for you, or not. Ford are fucking terrible in this respect btw, at least in my experience of three separate vehicles spanning 20-odd years.

However, I totally disagree with Grim... when he says modern car manufacturers are basically all very similar in terms of reliability and build quality. If that were true, the likes of completely impartial surveys like Which? and JD Power would be finding this, but in fact they find the total opposite - there are wide differences between manufacturers offering similarly priced, same sector products e.g. Toyota and Honda vs. Citroen and Fiat/Alfa. That's not me making shit up, it's a fact, and it has nothing whatsoever to do with badge snobbery or owt like that either - these are similarly priced products as I've said. Besides, I've spent enough time hanging round various major car plants in my time across Europe and in the UK to know there's a huge yawning gulf between the best and worst production practices, age of machinery, accepted manufacturing tolerance and even just the work ethos of the staff, to know that such a claim is bollocks anyway.

In any event, it doesn't stack up to simple logic - with so many possible variables with something as complex as car design and manufacture, acorss massively diverse cultures, places and degrees of expertise/investment, or not, it just doesn't stand to reason that all would be 'broadly similar' anyway.

The fact of the matter is, there is no comparison at all between the likes of Ford/Fiat and Toyota. Whereas the former may well be more interesting to drive in some cases and designed more with driving pleasure in mind, the Toyota will have vastly improved quality, durability and reliability. The panels will fit better because the manufacturing tolerances are tighter, in turn because the plant and machinery they're produced on is newer and better, there's been more investment and R&D ploughed back into the business and its products and the (non unionised) workers are better motivated. Sames goes for the engine and all the other gubbins. Despite having no badge prestige to speak of and costing roughly the same amount of money. Why else would Toyota haave become the largest, most popular car brand in the world, from nowhere perhaps 30 years ago, and the likes of GM and Ford near bankrupt?

Well, there is - lovely numerical comparisons. 25% of all Fords (in the last ten years) are taken in for repair, compared to 14% of all Toyotas (same period).
We don't know a couple of things, however. One is the severity of the problems (although the Ford repairs, on average, cost 2/3 of the Toyota repairs) and the other thing is the actual model breakdown (although I'll have a hunt for that later) so we can do like-for-like comparison. Even here, though, 25 cars out of 100 isn't exactly 'night and day' difference from 14 cars out of 100. If you'd have said 'Land Rover', though, you'd have been right (52% 8)).
I seem to recall from a study a few years ago that there's a 'reliability price point' which is fairly cheap, around which you'll get the most reliable cars. Really cheap or really expensive cars tend to go wrong a lot (or perhaps are taken in for repair a lot).
Didn't we have this conversation before, only about 360s and PS3s?

Cavey wrote:

Toyota are nearly 74 years old (big celebrations next year, I'd imagine) and the constantly-unreliable Land Rover are currently rolling in cash ;)

Do you have a land line you could call it on and listen for the ring tone? I guess not, or you wouldn't be asking. Perhaps you could PM a non-stalker on BETEO (if such a person exists) and get them to ring it.

The fact of the matter is, there is no comparison at all between the likes of Ford/Fiat and Toyota.

It means you are almost half as likely to be taking a Toyota in for repair. How is that not a night and day difference?

I'm going to suggest that if it's been missing for two weeks it will also be flat by now. Or at least turned off.

Or was that a thinly veiled attempt to get mimi's phone number? :hat:

Well to be fair mate, you've refuted your own point far better than I could? There is, of course, huge statistic significance in that almost twice as many Fords as Toyotas needed repair visits, and four times as many Land Rovers, over the same time period. That's an 80% and 270% increase respectively, pretty much the very definition of a 'night and day' increase, I'd have thought. I rest my case.

Oooh! As a long-standing Xbox Live user (first signed up when the original Ghost Recon was released on the original Xbox, so a while then!), they've offered me a 12-month auto renewing subscription at £23.99. Gotta take that really, eh?

Aside from the fact they were advertising that very price on the dashboard last week, it is a fantastic offer uniquely available to you.

Looking on here it isn't quite as clear cut, though:

http://www.reliabilityindex.com/

Compare a Mondeo with an Avensis and there doesn't appear to be much in it.

I'm not sure what we think of this data. It comes from a third party warranty company so I'm sure it might be skewed somehow but I feel it must be better than JD Power which is basically just asking a random bunch of plebs what they reckon.
