Be Excellent To Each Other

Craster and I are starting a food blog, http://objection-salad.com (nothing there yet). We need a logo and branding for it. So far, after a long time of noodling about, this is best I have:

I know this isn't very good, but I'm flailing around in the dark here. My core idea is a logo around the typographical elements O:S!, which allows for an easy reduced-size square version of the logo (for favicons etc) as well as the more traditional rectangular version I am working on here. I have no idea about colours or fonts or anything else, that's just what I ended up at after doodling in Photoshop. I usually prefer sans for logos but the big drop-caps look crap without serifs and there's no way on earth I'm qualified to mix fonts.

As a side issue, Craster isn't keen on the ! in the site name, although I quite like it (I think it's punchy, he prefers deadpan), so that's up for debate too. Help me, Beex graphic designers! Make decisions so we don't have to!

What's the site itself going to look like? What sort of content are you going to have? I presume the sort of higher classed stuff you post on your own blog?

Probably going to use the nova theme with some tweaking to colours and ditching the background graphic in favour of a flat colour or neutral gradient fill: http://novatheme.tumblr.com/

Content will be along the same lines as http://saltandfat.com/ or http://americandrink.net/. So, writing about and photos of food, but not straightforward recipe posts or restaurant reviews; two guys doing a post a week can't hope to compete with the commercial sites for that. Rather, we'll aim to put character into the writing; not just a recipe for how to cook something, but more focus on blurb about it that'll make you want to do it. So yes, similar to the stuff I write now for fscked.co.uk (which is where the idea came from, I'm going to split the food stuff and the tech stuff out from fscked and put them on focussed microsites).

I like the name but the exclamation mark is not good.

A rough concept, if you want to have it clean, a bit more classy and don't mind spending a few quid on some stock photography:



edit: the first isn't perhaps a salad item, but I like the shape of it graphically.

Hm. Sounds interesting. I happen to know a person whose mum recently self-published a cookery book with the idea that rather than just being a list of recipes, it was also a story thing, with all the things in it being based on her experiences growing up in Soviet Russia, to give it more character and such. I will have to look him up and see how it's going - I last spoke to him a couple of months ago.

Best idea would be an amalgamation of JC and Mal's logo concepts: something less busy than JC's, but not as sterile as Malaboob's.

Coincidentally, next week is the start of my new blog called, Objects on salad. Starting with a 3 installment thriller including a bike pump on a Ceasar, a football on a Waldorf, and a hedgehog on a Niçoise.

That would have worked better with spoiler, rather than quote tags.

I'd like to see a logo that somehow illustrates salad being used in violent* acts, like someone getting slammed in the head with a lettuce, or maybe a shot-blast of peas to the face.

*sexual violence would also be acceptable.

I think it probably needs the exclamation mark.

I used to be good at this sort of thing but have never managed to get to grips with modern image programs, or found one I liked, so, umm, I probably won't be helping. Great idea for a blog though!



It's OK but utterly basic drawing tools - no grid snap, no useful fills. Seems to be mainly aimed at people who can't work out how to download images with their web browser, use screen grab or upload the result.
