I've been reminded by the "identify this game" thread about how ace some retro 'title' music was. Shouts to Lotus 2 (with subliminal message), Project X, pretty much every Bitmap Brothers game and the rather spooky Lords Of Chaos, but my favourite is the theme to DMA Design's Walker.

You may have a listen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEWwqKPr4E0

Note: I was never that impressed by the Cannon Fodder theme as a song. The sampling was great, sure, but song-wise it didn't float my boat.

I'd have to give the Bitmap Brothers a bit of a shout for their music too - Speedball 2 had a great theme tune and The Chaos Engine is filled with great music.

All three Shadow Of The Beast games have some of the best music ever put into a computer game.

For me "No Second Prize" on the Amiga was great.

Also, special mention goes to Chuck Rock. That still makes me chuckle today and has special memories of a better time.

I am sure there was a tune on the later levels that was better still, but I can't find it.

The Turrican games on the Amiga had some fucking amazing music as I recall.

Come to think of it, virtually all the game music I like comes from the Amiga.

There was a game I had on the Amiga, I can't remember what it was, nor what you had to do, allI can remember was it was shareware/Freeware and came on a magazine disk. The theme tune was a remix of Old MacDonald. Does anyone have any idea what I am talking about?

Rob Hubbard was the SID chip* master.

*Another reason why Speckies were the C64s poor relation.

Been messing around with PC Engine emulator Ootake recently and the theme to Alien crush is probably the best chip stuff I've heard in a while. If I can find it the game over theme is pretty rocking too.

Turrican 2 obviously:

I did like Navy Seals on the GX4000:

I also like Prehistorik 2's title screen music on the CPC as the technical achievement of doing full sampled music on the CPC shouldn't be underestimated:

Not the best tune ever, but 10/10 for doing that on an 8 bit. I know the ST could do that kind of stuff with the same sound chip, but it's CPU is over 4 times faster!

TMNT 3 on the NES

Outlander on the Genesis (only three pieces of music, but they are all great!)

Ducktales 'Moon' on the NES, legendary

Megaman 3 "Spark Man" on the NES (all the others are good too

For fun, the vocaloid Megaman 3 is here, and the jolly password music here!

I'm going to presume we're only allowing chiptune stuff here BTW, otherwise I'd be waffling on about how excellent the title screen music to Panzer Dragoon is, not to mention all of the music in Panzer Dragoon Saga.

Says retro title music, but doesn't actually specify chiptune as opposed to red-book audio. And I'd call a Saturn game 'retro'.

Admittedly I am being a pedantic twat, but there you go.

Although Follin is correctly identified as an awesome beeper (and AY etc) musician, I think that Martin Galway is my favourite beeper composer 'back in the day'

I used to spend ages just listening to that music and the next tune...

Although he didn't create much on the Speccy, he composed two of my favourite beeper tunes. :)

Those paying attention would have noted the CPC doing fully sampled music with the same sound chip further up the thread, except with considerably less memory, storage space and CPU power.

Not really, but fairly rare to have fully sampled music because the Yamaha soundchip was only 4 bit and frankly sounded shocking compared to the Amiga.

On the ST you could just throw CPU grunt and memory at the problem. On an 8 bit like the CPC it was more of an achievement to do stuff like that because you didn't have the power or storage space to play with.

That said the Prehistorik music was on the CPC Plus only which had DMA support. On a standard CPC if you wanted to play samples basically the entire computer had to come to a halt to facilitate it. With DMA it enabled the sound chip to access the memory directly which stops the seizing up problem.

I may have been the only person who liked Turrican 3 but I seem to remember the end music being great.

My faves are anything that Tim Follin did using his three-channel trickery on the 48k Speccy, the music to Quazatron and a couple of bits from Target Renegade.

Well I could have written "Samples? Used as instruments in tracker-style music? Within a game? On the ST?!" instead, but I thought that in a thread titled "Retro Game Theme Music", in relation to a video of an in-game sequence, that context might have been... ooooh what's the phrase? ...fucking obvious?
:belm: :p

But yeah, that practise was sufficiently rare that I'm struggling to think of a single other example. I'm not talking about one-shots (Xenon & Return To Genesis) or when they just sampled some music and played it back (Microprose Golf and... do I remember Super Hang-On doing likewise?)
