My friend's 'Missus' is trying to figure out the name of a game that came on a cartridge in the late 80s and was like Defender but vertical. Any ideas?

Wow, that's a lot of detail to be going with! :)
Is it Defender and he had his console/TV on its side?

You need a bit more info - any of the following would help :

What bits are like Defender (just the shooty bit)
Scrolling up or scrolling down
What system (lots of systems had carts - C64 / Speccy / Atari / GX4000 / etc)
Any other gameplay elements
Any clue of publisher
Even just the colour and shape of the cart would help.

Otherwise a google for "vertically scrolling shooters + 80's" with safesearch *ON* would be a reasonable starting point.

Dare I ask, but what does googling "vertically scrolling shooters + 80's" with safesearch off get you?

Bit of a long shot, but Vanguard on the 2600 had vertical-scrolling levels.

On a cartridge on a C64. That narrows it down to about 3 games, one of which is International Soccer.

My first thought was Juno First, vertical Defenderish frolics ahoy, or something.

A quick google seems to point to Xenon (or 2) - I'm sure i had a C64 version but dont remember it on cart and it was much more famous on the Amiga (or do they think cartridges are those plastic things that plug into the console - therefore cart = disk = disc = everything else)

Yeah, that's a lot like the Xenon 2 theme. But that wasn't much like Defender. At all.

And here's the music from Amiga's Xenon 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2w-tiRnac2k

The music at 0:16 does sound like it was nicked from the movie.

There's always the Master System and Mega Drive versions I suppose.

The correct answer was indeed Xenon 2. Well done.

Also, did I get it?

[edit]I'll take a draw with Zaphod, as I was more confident :)

That would be 'Megablast (Hip Hop on Precinct 13)' by Bomb the Bass, which was used in Xenon II: Megablast.

It's a lot like defender really when you think about it. It's er... well it's got shooting in it.

Ah, if that's the original title then that would explain the similarity with the movie soundtrack.

Xenon II was rubbish. Only the music and graphics were good - the game was too slow and boring.

There, I've said it!

You're not the first to say it.
I quite enjoyed it, but it was one on the few games my ST-owning friend had, so one of the only 16 bit games I played for a while, and I liked it a lot.
Completed it, too.

I completed it, but only because I'd purchased it. Xenon was a more enjoyable game, I thought.
