I swear I am not making this up:

The 17:01 Cardiff Central - Rhymney train has been delayed due to wintry conditions at Woking this morning.

Really. Something was really late through Woking, which caused other trains to be late, which cause the 13:23 Portsmouth Harbour - Cardiff Central to be delayed at Fratton, and then knackering the Rhymney train when it eventually got to Cardiff.

Today was the first I'd heard about it, and the World Cup is the only football related thing I pay any attention to, so um, yeah.

Fucking hated Euro 96. Glad the jingoism of that sorry affair will not be repeated.

Besides, there's nothing special about England hosting the World Cup: the majority of the best foreign players can be seen in matches, showing up English players, here every week.

The World Cup would be held all over the country. One of the more commendable parts of the bid were that they included Plymouth and Bristol which would have pumped money into the local economy. There would have been less disruption to London than an average midweek set of games given only 2 or 3 stadiums across the greater London area would be taking part.

I've just heard that Murdoch's rag the sun is planning on running a front page story tomorrow blaming the BBC for England not securing the WC 2018.
Laughable really. Apparently the England bid received 2 votes and one of those was from our own Fifa delegate.
On the day that wikileaks releases emails confirming what everybody knew about Russia being a mafia run country and them winning the bid, it's not a huge leap is it?

Just a thought about the World Cup in Qatar.....

In Qatar alcohol is banned. Gayness is banned. Woman showing flesh are banned.

So if you are a gay woman who likes a drink and wants to wear skimpy clothing, you'll probably end up dead.

Not one I'd be likely to go to.

Euro 96 was marvellous, and very uniting I found, not just within the English community, but also with the various other countries there. Maybe I'm looking back through it with rose coloured glasses, but whenever I was in Birmingham everyone was very friendly and willing to have banter and not killing each other. Hell, it even united the Scots and English in wishing destruction upon the Dutch! :D

Quick catchup points:

Qatar is not a dry country. Public boozing is subject to penalties, but bars, hotels, and presumably stadia are fine.

Wasn't the story not just bacteria that can survive on arsenic, but bacteria that use arsenic in place of phosphorous, which is different to all other life on Earth and suggests and entirely different path of life emergence? Also at the same time suggesting that it would be possible o find life on worlds devoid of phosphorous, previously not thought possible.

It's ok, they also said they're located an unemployed space pirate in the English home counties, they're going to send him out there to probe the competition.

I like the arsenic bacteria news. It is interesting :) And it is more newsworthy than that woman MaliA posted.

She looks really old, I'd hate having to dress like that, even if just for 'formal' events. Poor girl.

They've been at each other's throats since the dawn of time as they both sit on opposite sides of a construction contract. Well the shitty, loud mouth ones are, the rest of us just get on with it.

I love PQS baiting, I don't really argue with him I just like winding him up :) Mostly by dismissing everything he says and questioning how credible he is when he's too scared to even speak to the client and only works 9-5pm and takes an hour for lunch everyday. Hehe! My favourite one recently was "Well, that's wrong. Do you even know what drawing you were supposed to be measuring? No? I'm not surprised, how can you actually get anything done if you only work part-time hours? Did you boss get this contract QS in because you can't be trusted to do this on your own?" It's all pretty tongue in cheek but it undermines his confidence enough so he agrees with me on everything, as long as the contract work is within the bill allowance, no matter how much of a pisstake it is.

Yes, I'm a cunt.

Thanks Kalmar, they sure are very tasty!!

After my moan earlier, my day got a lot worse.

I'm home now. I think I may be on the cusp of a - rather unfair IMO - bollocking tomorrow.

Currently have my CV onscreen and ready to update and six decent looking jobs to apply for though. I feel a bit ashamed to be wanting to give up on a job only 3 months after starting it, but I managed 4 years at my previous employer, 2 years at the one before that, six months at the one before that and 18 months at the one before that, so hopefully I won't seem too work-shy or disloyal to any potential future employers. I just really don't think I can stay at this place anymore. It's actually starting to make me feel a bit ill, if I'm honest.

@ Flis Sounds like good sport, valuation time must be fun. What's up with him not speaking to the Client - that's just bizarre! Presumably he's got more than one job on otherwise he should be all over your external works re-measure. Or he's ultra lazy.

@ Zio sorry to hear about your rubbish times chap, if there are jobs about I don't suppose there's any harm in testing the water. Work's not meant to make you miserable. If it's of any use, I'm about to get an absolute beasting off my big big boss for something I've not been involved with, was in fact specifically excluded from. He's a grade A mental too so I'll get threatened with my job at least twice in the conversation, then I have to sit with him at the Xmas party and pretend it's all good. I'll just sit and dream about driving a butter knife through his skull. Chin up though, there's always cider and Bezzies!

Are you out of the "trial period" yet? if you are, then you should tell them that you are unhappy, and that you're thinking about looking for other work.

I once did a job which I hated, and left within 6 months, at my exit interview the HR people were really pissed off at me for not coming to them with my gripes. If you're thinking about leaving anyway, I don't see what harm it can do?

oh, and if something's not your fault, don't take crap from the managers, you are not at school, and they are not your teachers, they have a job to do, and part of that job is to look after you, make sure you ok and if you are having difficulties, to try and make your life easier.

There are few things in life more miserable than having to get up every morning for a job you hate.

Ordinarily I would wholeheartedly agree with you. The guy I'm talking about owns the business and is mental. I have an excellent relationship with the other managers. The managers he employs to sit between him and his staff. He has a habit of completely skipping them and getting stuck into the staff, more often than not he has completely the wrong end of the stick and wont take telling.

I'm no shrinking violet so ordinarily have no problem, this guys though it's best to take the roasting and then discuss it with my line manager and explain what really happened. The guy is a tool, but he owns the company and likes to remind people. The worst kind of boss ever.

Sorry Zio, I hijacked your moan man! What Malc said about speaking to HR sounds good though. Are you due an appraisal or anything like that soon?

Sympathy, EW. I worked for a guy like that, he'd had a lucky break just before the dotcom burst and somehow this was due to his brilliance as a businessman, not sheer dumb luck. He also gave the vaguest instructions ("play around with it" being the most common) and then was disappointed by my results not being what he wanted.

You really should speak to either your boss or your HR people, I've only worked in one place that had a HR department and basically the only thing they were good for was organising social events and making sure they had the right address on file and you'd signed your contract of employment.....I am led to believe that other companies have proper HR departments, where you can voice your grievances and make positive steps towards getting things sorted.

Only you can know for sure whether it's worth making the effort to get things sorted, I think you've said before that you don't even really like the work itself so confronting your manager probably won't really help in that regard. With Christmas and the new year coming up, there are probably going to be lots of people jumping ship but it's definitely worth putting yourself out there to see what else is available.

@The Egg, it's more about telling the client his design team are squandering his money and he doesn't have the balls to tell the client about the things he can't afford...You know how it is, the client always wants every option pricing before he even attempts to make a decision, which holds the contractor up and it's for fundamental changes to the design, which he has no money for. They blew most of their contingency on the M&E extras and we're only half way through the contract. Add to that the fact it's a capital project, the consultants are too scared to make decisions, as is the client. Bloody frustrating.

Christ! I don't suppose he now owns a consulting engineering company? :DD

Sounds like the same guy with the same excellent attention to detail.
