Whedon's take: http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2010/11/ ... -emotions/
Quote:
This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths — just because they can’t think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself.

Obviously I have strong, mixed emotions about something like this. My first reaction upon hearing who was writing it was, “Whit Stillman AND Wes Anderson? This is gonna be the most sardonically adorable movie EVER.” Apparently I was misinformed. Then I thought, “I’ll make a mint! This is worth more than all my Toy Story residuals combined!” Apparently I am seldom informed of anything. And possibly a little slow. But seriously, are vampires even popular any more?

I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death. But, you know, AFTER…

The film was total gash though. Didn't even have SMG in it.

I liked the movie, it was harmless fun.

That they turned the series into this angst-ridden Party Of Five With More Biting was a surprise, especially as it turned out to be a creepy preview of the sort of obsession Twilight would cause...

I think by the time Angel came out Buffy was getting tired, so my interest turned to Angel instead.

I still think the concept was aces, and so I'll look on this with interest. The problem was that the characters' stylings were very Whedon-y, so that dialogue was a big part of the show.

I would probably have liked Buffy if it weren't for all the 25 year old teenagers, and the irritating characters in it. Buffy, for example. Or, to use her full name, Buffy Stupidname the Squealing Flaily Handy Runner.

That said, I don't dislike it, and I respect what it meant to people. And even if I didn't the remake people could fuck right off, slip on some poo on their way out, and fall comically off a ledge onto a big spike.

Being drunk I was momentarily conflicted. Wes Anderson - my favourite current film-maker - doing a Buffy film without Mr Whedon's involvement or consent? I was for a split-second angry and then just wondering and making strange 'oooh' noises with my mouth. Then I read it all properly and found it was just some woman remaking it. *sigh*.

And thus the portable 'no-filmy-makey' force-field deployed by Fox Studios and others around Mr Whedon redoubles in strength. :'(

Still, not like they announced doing another Firefly series or Serenity film without Whedon, eh? Imagine that, eh? Eh? Ha ha ha! (Puts gun muzzle against temple.)

So he made Buffy The Film. Which he rebooted into Buffy The Series. Which he semi-rebooted into Angel.

And he's moaning about someone else having a go?

He wrote a script for the film, which was changed around substantially in production (which he wasn't involved in) in ways he wasn't happy with. Then he made the show, which is sort-of a reboot, I guess, except it was actually much closer to the orginal script than the film was. And Angel isn't a reboot at all, it's a spin-off.

I just kind of 'missed' it. I've never seen a single one. I don't know - maybe it was on at an awkward time or something, but though I know that everyone was watching it, it passed me by somehow.

I dislike the term "reboot", and also "re-imagining". However, I can't think of a term for this sort of thing I do like - it's more than a simple "remake", and not a sequel or prequel or follow-up. Maybe we should invent a proper word for this. "Did you see that ridiculous splunf of 'The Wicker Man'? Nicholas Cage punches a woman in the face whilst dressed as a bear!"

I believe "desecrated" is the appropriate term.

In the case of the Wicker Man I prefer the straightforward term 'The Ruining'

Yeah, didn't Sky just pinch it for the last two seasons. But it had already gone shit by then, so you weren't missing much.

I made a whole thread about it.
I've only watched the first two so far, though.

Oops. 6.45pm actually when I checked it. Was that after a double bill of The Simpsons?

I liked buffy when it was about a girl who slayed vampires and stuff. When it became about a bunch of teenagers with issues who were having sex with each other constantly I lost interest. Seasons 1,2,3 were best and 5 and 7 were fairly enjoyable too. 4 and 6 were garbage.

You're officially not interested in hot teenagers - particularly hot lesbian teenagers - having sex?

What a wretched, miserable half-life you must lead.

Oh and also Willow and Tara was wonderful making series four the best series of anything ever, especially if being watched from the point of view of a 16/17 year old me. Still took me another two bloody years to do anything about it though.
