This is the third time I've read essentially the same article based on this book, first in the Mail, then the Times. It tells us nothing new about the education system and is exploitative of the students featured - serving as it did to give this guy material to make money out of writing a book.

I thought the Guardian would know better...

I'm sure that his time working supply was filled with knowledge that he was going to get rich from writing a book like this

I'm also pretty sure neither the article nor the book are cherry picking the worst of the education system as one commentator states, with the implication it is to make things seem worse than they are. Surely the article and book has made it clear that these are thwe worst of the schools and the resulting discussion is how to make the worst of the schools perform like the best of the schools!

Ugh, sorry if this post is messy, the mental college computer won't let me see what I'm writing, preffering instead to jump back to the top of the page ?:|

Possibly bad form. Same with handing it in to one of the other partners (which I briefly considered)

College today. Have been stressing about a maths test I took last Tuesday all week because I need it to pass my course and I hadn't studied at all because I'd been away. I had tried to guess how many marks I'd managed but as far as I could tell I hadn't done enough to pass. Anyway, results this morning and turns out I had passed by a respectable margin so huge sighs of relief all round.
This leaves me with my morning free to work on other things. I can't concentrate though, the library is far too busy with a wee Costa coffee stand right next to it and the library is open plan so all I can hear is the noise of milk being foamed. >:(
Considering giving it up for my now 'til my class after lunch and going for a KFC. (a rare treat for me, usually it's a Marks and Spencers sandwich in the car on college days while I read the paper.)

Well done Gilly! I hated maths exams!

I'm really genuinely surprised I managed to pass. There have been a few fails in the class and I was worried about it all week. Hopefully that's the last maths I have to do until next year. Most of it is easy enough if you learn the formulas but there were a few questions that seemed a lot less clear and one where I attempted to solve it a few times before scoring it out and pressing random buttons on the calculator in the hope of some sense appearing on screen.

I don't know how I'll cope with Maths at uni if I go :D

That sounds so familiar :(

Don't worry about taking it at Uni Gill, as long as your marks in the other parts of the course are good, they will allow you to scrape through one bad one if my experience is anything to go by. I think I scored something like 23% in my final maths exam (learned one or two questions off by heart) and still ended up with a 2:1.

Here is an example of that question*. If anyone solves it, explain it for me eh?

Find all the solutions of:

2sin (x+0.3) = -1.4 for 0<x<2pie

*I managed to correctly answer the question immediatly preceding it, which was a variation on

Find all the solutions of:

5cos (x/2) = 0.4 for 0degrees < x < 360degrees

If I could be arsed I'd draw a graph. And then see where it is equal to -1.4 between 0 and 2pi.

I can't even remember if I covered any of the above at school. I was told I had to do A-Level maths if I wanted to do IT - so far, I've never needed anything beyond the absolute basics.

From that article -

Quote:
Prime Minister David Cameron's spokeswoman said he was "delighted" and sent the couple his very best.

Ed Miliband said he was also delighted for Prince William and Kate Middleton.

"The whole country will be wishing them every happiness."

Hardly worth asking them unless they're going to say "You're making a big mistake. Don't do it!"
