I like BBC4 programmes, they appear to cater for people with functioning brains and attention spans longer than that of a fruit fly.

ITV should carry a health warning these days, or perhaps, 'If you're a moron, this is the kind of thing you'll probably like' tag line.

Yeah, I agree. You get some right hidden gems on there, the knack is just remembering to check the Radio Times or whatever.

It clashes with new America's Next Top Model and new Whitechapel. And Horizon. Stupid TV schedulers. At least it's getting a late-night repeat.

Did anyone catch this? I recorded it but probably won't find time to watch it until later in the week.

Another telly-tip-me-do on BBC4 - tonight at 9pm, is a Gatiss adaptation of The First Men in the Moon, which should be ace and stuff.

Also! Also, for any other HG Wells buffs, and following the above on the same channel, is an excellent drama about the man, as portrayed by Michael Sheen (this isn't new and was first shown a few years ago).

I almost replied to his post in this thread last night, before catching myself .

I watched the first part of this yesterday, very enjoyable program. I have seen Mark Gatiss before, but don't really 'know' what he does. Anyway, i will be watching the second part tonight if I can stay awake. I flaked out before the second episode last night.

I've enjoyed the two parts shown so far - part 2 also succeeded in reminding me just how crap and camp most of the Hammer Horrors were. I know, some people will hate me for saying that, but they really were pretty gash.

As for non-Hammer films, at least they mentioned and showed some clips from the rather splendid Night of the Demon.

Yeah I always found them a bit of a yawn-fest, if I'd been born ten years earlier then I guess they might have seemed frightening in some way but as a kid they just seemed silly and tame compared to the video nasties.

Yeah, I'd watch almost any horror film on TV when I was younger (and now too) but I always swtiched over after 20 minutes (at most) of any Hammer Horror film.

The Hammer Horror films seem to be a product of their time, ie mostly enjoyed by those who saw them when they originally released.

Perhaps I too would have some kind of nostalgic affection for them if I had seen them when originally released, but to me a good film should be able to be enjoyed irrespective of when it was made due to a great script. Look at classic black & white films such as Night of the Demon and Them! - both great films, smartly written and well acted. Compare and contrast to the Hammer Horror films - yes, the latter were in colour, but big deal.

That's a great movie which apparently is being released for the first time on DVD soon. Don't know whether it's remastered or not. Might have to buy it if it's not silly money.

Indeed it is, released on Region 2 for the first time three days ago.

Not the first time on DVD though, it was originally released in Region 1 a couple of years ago.

Fully agree about Night of the Demon - only saw this the once when it was on telly a couple of years back, and an excellent film.

Will have to respectfully disagree re the Hammer films, as I think they have a certain charm and style about them, plus you know, Peter Cushing + Christopher Lee = pure ace in any form.

Really enjoyed that second ep of the Gatiss thing, by the way. I don't actually even like horror films as a rule, and certainly not the modern gory stuff you get, but some of those films from the 50s & 60s I can handle, as they're more chilling than disgusting, and it's all about what you don't see, than what you do.

Later tonight I shall be watching that First Men in the Moon which I posted about up above, and which I'm really looking forward to.

I've watched Parts 1 & 2 up to now and they've both been excellent.

Going to watch Part 3 tonight.

I do think The Wicker Man deserved more than 45 seconds of screen time though!

This was an excellent series, but must confess I couldn't watch part 3 as it contained lots of gory stuff and I don't like those films. I'll miss the talkie stuff from Gatiss, but never mind.

Oh, I really loved that First Men in the Moon, by the way.

Watched all three parts of this on iPlayer now. Great stuff. I recommend.

...and remember his former pals are on doing the Psychoville halloween special...much like the League of Gentlemen Chrimbo one it will be in the Amicus portmanteau stylee.

There really isn't much gore in the third bit Agent, Gatiss talks around the films far more than he actually shows anything, it's probably a Cert 15 kind of affair at worst. (When the films he's discussing are Cert 18 horror fare, even today.)

In some ways Part 3 is the best one, as it brings horror into contemporary times and makes the whole series feel very much complete.

Watched episode 1-3 back to back(think it was bbc4 last night), and it was a very enjoyable 3 hours.


I remember being very scared by the first horror film I ever saw when about 13, and it was a Hammer house of horror film.


As was said, back in the day, there were no CGA and 70's 80's horror was scary in the decades they were released in.

Saw7 came out tonight - thats very noughties film genre. Mark Gatiss did well to just cover till the 80s although he missed out Poltgergeist and Hellraiser which if he did a Part 4 he should have covered.

Saw isn't horror, it's torture porn.

Fair comment, but not many films have done 7 films in a series and all been pretty much equally good (and if you dont like that kind of film, equally bad).

In fact, its the only one I can think of.

Theres plenty that I find much more disturbing though - Human Centipede was worse in my opinion, as well as Hostel.
