So, like any self-respecting geek, my DVD collection is in alphabetical order, by title (I did consider director of starring actor but then realised I'd never find anything).

Obviously things like "The Longest Yard" are filed under "L", but where should "A Scanner Darkly" go - A or S?

What about "An American Werewolf in London" (and yes, "A" obviously, but "an" or "am")?

You could get around this problem by sorting them by year of release, or casting director's name.

I don't see how it matters now because where ever you put it, when you want to find it you'll think of this thread and remember the outcome of the poll.

I've split mine into sections. Tv, comedy, horror, boxsets, indie, budget. Makes it easier to find something you want to watch.

In your example, A.

I organise mine by title, with two exceptions. If the films are part of a series then they go together. For example, the Batman films (starting from 1966 all the way through to The Dark Knight) are in sequence, even though technically the last film should be under D.

The other exception is James Bond films, which get put into the J section and are then sorted not by sequence, but by title. So Casino Royale goes before Live And Let Die, for example.

//edit: I don't have any Star Wars DVDs, but I'm not sure what I would do in that instance - should Episodes I-III come before Episodes IV-VI, even though they came much later chronologically?

I keep all my dvds in a disc wallet and put the boxes away in the loft.

Am I still a geek?

See, I'd still put that one under T. However, my DVD collection is so small I don't bother organising it; I give almost no money to the movie industry.

Doesn't that make things impossible to find? Unless they're alphabetical in the wallet, of course.

I do the same, but it's quicker to download a 720p dvd rip of a film, than go and find the disk!

I do this (storing them in wallets), then keep a geeky log of all my films using this. Within this software, I log each film as being in "wallet 2, section 3" or whatever, so they can all be easily found.

This may be going too far for some, but it's ideal for me!

When I worked in a record shop, 'Bon Jovi' the band would be under 'B' but the singer's stuff would be under 'J' or 'B' depending on who had been filing that day. Drove me mad, that did.

If 'The Longest Yard' is filed under 'T', 'A Scanner Darkly' should surely be under 'A.'

This reminds me of Andy's records in Bolton (and possibly elsewhere, unless this was just a lone manager who liked to annoy his clientèle), who used to file albums in alphabetical order by album title, so Sergeant Pepper's was under S while Rubber Soul was under R (both by t'Beatles for you young 'uns that don't know about such things). Bonkers.

My DVDs are on genre shelves.

A combo of RipIt4Me, DVDDrecrypter and DVD Shrink is my cocktail of choice.

The former manages the latter two, so it's an easy process.

Shazbat! I'm sorry, I'll read that again.

If The Longest Yard is filed under L, A Scanner Darkly should surely be under S.

Oddly, I would put 'A Scanner Darkly' in 'A', but 'A Very Long Engagement' in 'V'.

I would drop 'The' from a movie title, but not 'A'. Maybe it's because there are so many 'The' films but not as many with an 'A'.

Imagine if they were just 'a team'. That'd be well funny.

Ditto a film about the highest-level very long engagement.

You should take all the DVDs out of their cases, put them in random cases and then mix all the cases up. That'll make finding the film you want to watch a game, adding to your enjoyment.

No, it's because of the context. 'A Scanner Darkly' is a fragment of a sentence and cannot make sense on its own, whereas the other film can. Given that, the 'a' in 'A Scanner' is not like the 'a' in the other film.

Or something.

After giving Ripit4me a go (thanks for the tip Mr Biceps!) I am now sorely tempted to get a big HDD and rip all of my discs to it. Even without shrinking your looking at roughly 150 discs on a 1TB drive right?

OT: I heard 'Choice' for the first time a few weeks back, an Orbital tune from the green album era that features a huge sample from 'Annihilation'. Very good tune and really surprised to hear that sample being used.

BOT: Where do I file my 'The The' albums? If I had any.

I started to, then worked out it is much easier and quicker to just download all the DVDs I have, the divx quality is very similar to the original dvd picture quality. Similar enough for it not to bother me at least.

Or I would have done that, if it wasn't illegal, natch...

I don't know whether to like 'A Perfect Circle' for doing a cover of a song by the fairly obscure (but rather good) 'Failure' ("The Nurse Who Loved Me"), or to dislike them for doing it very poorly.

I think I'll go with dislike.
